Calming your nerves before fight/competition

I just sit down in a corner and chat with coaches/training partners about B.S. and/or I listen to relaxing music on my ipod or watch a movie on my PSP. It helps time go by for me atleast. You defiantly wont see me goofing off/being all loud before a fight.

I like the nervous energy, I feel like I preform better. Once the fight starts I then relax abit. I just try not to let it consume me and drain my energy. I'll usually try to watch my opponets fights and see what kind of fighter he is and go in then with a game plan from that.

This is a interesting question and I have been warming up our fighters for the last couple of cards and I can feel the tension and as I get closer to my first fight I already know I am going to be very nervous and have that I am about to crap my pants feeling.... I really don't want that though maybe I am wrong but I just have a feeling I will.... idk, I hate the thought of losing.

Train your ass off like theres no tommorrow thats the only thing that has taken the nerves from me. Knowing that you have done everything possible to win and be a champion makes me calm and confident.

I've read that people perform better when they are nervous.

Some people do. But not all. You can easily tell if someone is nervous...for me, it makes me think too much, and then I freeze. It's weird. Once I've been rolling around for a minute or two though, im fine.

I agree with MOFO knowing you are in great shape is the best thing. Thats the one thing that gets me nervous is If I have a fear of running out of gas in the fight

agreed ^^^
if you have trained your ass off you will have the confidence in knowing you are going to go out there and perform well, regardless of the end result
if you are fighting a "top notch" guy just remember you are pretty good yourself
with that kind of mentality you will be a force to be reckoned with

Just try to stay humble before a fight. Dont be a hard ass and tell everybody what your going to do to your oppenent. Thats how you lose focus. Stay calm and focus on clear thinking.

Rajah, Asana, and Pranayama yoga.

Mantra yoga is good as well if you are really nervous. It doesn't even need to make sense, just repeat the same rhythmic phrase over and over. Why do you think they do that in the military?

Breath (Pranayama), position (Asana), and thought control (Rajah)l yoga are specifically designed to lower anxiety and quiet the mind. Look into it. It not only helps before, but during and after fights.

I don't bounce or hop or any of that. All of my energy is to saved for, and used upon, my opponent. Nothing else exists. Once the fight is over, I don't bounce or hop or any of that either. I raise my hand, shake his, and go to the back.
In between these two events, I attempt to recreate the entire series of Jack the Ripper murders as many times in the shortest amount of time as possible, upon his face, until the bell rings.
So it goes.

My first time on the mat was a horrormovie...Im still nervous each time though. Especially the 30 minutes before...

This is a big problem for me, i just stress up so much that i gas in the beginning and can't even think straight.

i just think "im about to make a sweet highlight!"....that gets me pretty pumped up....also i think of very violent things that are way worse tha fighting....daniel pearl getting his head chopped off, thinking of any thing murderous and violent helps me to remember that what i am about to do is just a fight, there are much worse things in life.

I have a fight coming up this Sunday.

When I was just starting out as a fighter I loved fighting and never really got nervous beforehand.

Once I started doing well, and winning a lot, I started to get very nervous before my fights. I felt that I had so much pressure on me, so many expectations from myself and others, that I completely psyched myself out. I found it difficult to even go to tournaments because I was so upset about the prospect of losing. I started to think that if I lost everyone would think I was a complete loser and no good whatsoever, that I would be a joke.

This time I am trying to tell myself that win or lose, I have trained and tried my best. Not that losing is just fine, but that sometimes you do lose; and if you do it does not mean that you are terrible and have embarrassed yourself.

I have really gotten a lot out of this thread, and your guys ideas on how to stay focused.

Thanks!

i don't get very nervous. that's what i train for. you only get nervous if you doubt yourself. believe, train, and jack fools up.

I had a fight this past weekend and I found that by just relaxing and being around friends was calming. I just hung out, talked, and watched the fights before mine and just had a good time.
