I'd say as of today, he will go down as the biggest "What if" in UFC HW history.

At this point we ought to be thankful his broken body held long enough for us to see what we saw.

Kinda agree. Shame. He could have been ufc goat as imo he would beat all the current roster handily.

Which is crazy, since a lot of fighters have lost a lot of time from injuries.

He has fought 4 guys in 8 years!!!!, let that sink in. Bigfoot, JDS, Browne and Werdum in 8 years. Just retire please, he is a surgeons shadow.

He was done a long time ago. Fuck this thread. What's next? a "what if Cain had been healthy for ten years and fought under pride rules" conversation?

thing is i dont want him to retire. He will likely fight 1x this year but he could still have interesting matches and could fight 2x next year. I want to see cain vs jds IV since i think jds can win it. And want to see cain vs overeem.

Why? He became champ, had a good run in his 20's

What is there to what if about? I think we all got to see prime Cain

Please stop with the narrative that Cain's career got derailed due to injury. He derailed his career when he became lazy and stop taking physical therapy seriously. This guy is just not motivated.

I would pick stipe to beat cain. Cain was great but lets not label him as some all time GOAT, hes up there for the hws but his legendary attribute was his work rate. I might get flak for this, but back in the day watching his fights against jds and werdum, aside from his legendary work rate and output as a hw, i thought he a lot of holes in his game, a bit reckless at times and didnt really keep himself at range... the range would be dangerous against guys like stipe, overreem, or any of the taller guys like volkov

Sad to say, but who can possibly be this injury prone when young and get less so when they're older? Was a great run and I feel there were a lot of great fights for him that he'll never get to have.
That said, I know in the future I'll be nauseated by all of the "Prime healthy Cain/was an unlucky GOAT" talk.
Your ability to make it to the cage is part of you as a fighter. As much as your TDD, striking, submissions, etc. IMO anyway.

The problem is that even prime Cain didn't fight much. But he looked good while doing so.

hes got that tony furguson mentality.

they think they are training smart, because they are doin things correctly and efficiently .

but then they over work so much it becomes working harder not smarter.

Being a HW, typically he has a few more years in him (injuries aside).
There is no reason why he can't have been working on his skill sets in all of this time off, as he was injured but not paralysed.

So, if his skills are increased and we are mostly left only with his need to get that cardio tank back up, then that is very doable.

Unless he is injured again, then I don't see why we can't see at least a decent 2 years back in the mix.

I think that Cain is very capable of delivering a one sided beat down to Stipe, ala Dos Santos style and the same against most of the HW pool, if not all.

The only HWs that are considerably younger are not really the best performers.

So, I still think that Cain can and will very likely be champion again if he returns this year, even for one fight and stays healthy. Of course, it is all dependent on that.
