Both Charlie Olives and Islam are Overrated Mega Thread

BJ Penn destroyed a prime Matt Hughes, went toe to toe with GSP, and fought Machida at heavyweight.

Fucking making me get on here and defend Baby Jay, ya goof. I don't believe you've even seen the man fight.

Fucking neophyte.
"to the death, Georges!"

I hope they give him the TS just to get this shit over with, not in fucking October thought, is just May and this MF can't fight in July or August? the champ is active AF and the title fights should be at his time not the challenger's.

Islam signed up to fight RDA and Dariush and instead got Hooker/Green. Dustin, Gaethje, Chandler, and everyone above refuse to speak his name. This is how rankings get distorted, top 5 guys want to rematch each other for years.

You don’t have to think Islam’s resume is all that impressive but who would you say deserves a TS over him? You could say Dariush and I wouldn’t disagree but it’s not like his resume his vastly better than Islam’s.

must be the week for "can we talk about how overrated XYZ fighter is" threads.

Dariush was offered to fight to Islam in July but he turn it down, hes still injured. Islam called out Poirier and just crickets.

Nobody wants to fight Islam unless your name is RDA.

Islam is great, but it's odd to me how he has so much more push than someone like Arnold Allen, a guy who is basically in the same exact position as islam but in a different division.

Not really odd. <KhabibBS>

He is not really overrated as he has the skills to be the champ, but his resume is not really screaming deserving of a TS, yet. However, you forgot his best win in Tsarukyan. Though Tsarukyan did not have the ranking to really justify a TS for Islam, either.

these threads are funny because the exact same horseshit was being parroted around here when khabib was being lined up for a tile fight.

everyone and their mother bitched and whined about how he hasn't fought anyone and how his record is padded with cans.

2 years later everyone was on his nuts, and now they're moaning about makhachev. when he wins the title, he'll suddenly be the GOAT.

These are different "everyone"s youre talking about.

And it was totally true that Khabib had one of the easiest paths to one of the easiest title bouts in the modern era of the sport. Once becoming champion, Khabib was very impressive in his handful of defences. Both things can be true - relatively, very easy road to the title and then a dominant championship streak.

And the people who say he is the GOAT are simply wrong. He definitely isn't. He beat a bunch of Russian jobbers in two round smokers before the UFC, had a pretty uneventful few years grinding in the UFC including a controversial decision against Tibau and then a title bout against a half-retired real estate agent before he became really impressive - and he was VERY impressive, but only for about 4 fights. As impressive as he was as champ, that does not a GOAT make. Simply too short.

So, 2 out of those 3 things are true. Khabib had a very easy road to a very easy title fight. He then looked amazing for his short reign but he is absolutely not the GOAT, not even the LW GOAT, because his reign was way too short.

A LW champ that beat a ww champ twice?
Idk, BJ was pretty impressive.
Being a world champ in bjj before that is a cherry on top.

don't even bother responding to those mouthbreathers, imagine saying that one of the best LWs ever in BJ penn was overrated...

God damn I hate some of these fans. Just do anything to discredit fighters! Specially someone of such Legacy who gave us some of the best fights.

<RomeroSalute>

True story. I am and was a huge GSP fan, so BJ rankled my nerves on a few occasions with the baloney he cried about regarding Georges... HOWEVER... if you discredit BJ Penn's legacy, you're a total hater.

One of the most entertaining, most impressive, most fearless fighters of all time. BJ Penn is an acid test for MMA fans. If you don't at least respect what he did, you're a total hater and you aren't really a fan of the sport.

doesn't matter if he's over or under rated. the fact is he is on a long win streak and people want to see him fight oliveira. There are many reason why:

1) he is seen as khabib's protege and people want to know if he can be beat outside of that fluke KO. BJJ vs Sambo.
2) there is no one left for oliveira to fight. Both poirier and chandler need like 2-3 more wins before being considered. Gaethje has had 2 title fights in the last couple years and shit the bed. Dariush is inactive and can always fight islam later.
3) RDA is washed and we already know how he does against khabib. he's only calling for that fight because he has everything to gain and nothing to lose.
4) we missed out on tony vs khabib. this is a chance to redeem that.

I dont think its how good he is right now, but his ceiling.

You want overrated? Khamzat.
The dude who beat the nr 2 in his divison on his 5th fight ?

By the 5th fight of his UFC career, Islam was trying to put a winning streak together after getting KO'd cold in his 2nd UFC fight.

In Khamzat's 2nd UFC fight he still only got hit once.

Are you ok ?

When the top dawgs want nothing to do with you, strength of opposition can't really be held against you. It is what it is.

Sherdog's newest favourite meme employed in full effect I see.

NoBody wiLl fiGht hiM!!!

Usually pedalled by those who are fans of a fighter with 0 (or very few) top-end wins in an attempt to secure a fight with the champ or a top 3 guy.
Lol.

Ww division is the weakest that it has ever been in its history. Jorge has fought for the belt twice. #2 means shit

going 9-0 in the UFC is an easy path to a title shot? how many champions have had to do that? almost all of the prolific champions have gotten their title shots after a handful of fights.

he was dominant against guys who weren't quite the best, but very solid... just like islam is now. he had a long winning streak in the UFC and passed the eye test to anyone who had a clue, just like islam does. and yet, his opposition moaned about him being undeserving and not having enough quality wins. exactly like they do with islam now.

the point is, if you mop the floor with everyone, win a belt, and continue to mop the floor with everyone, the complaints about your title shot being undeserved become idiotic in retrospect. you can make a case for someone having an undeserved shot when they get it in their first UFC fight, but even that looks silly if they win it. what, they were undeserving, yet they could beat the supposed best guy in the world? as long as the new champ faces actual top contenders (i'm looking at you, bisping), the truth about them being deserving will eventually find them. but when your road to a title shot is you wining 10 in a row with the last 4 being all finishes, people need to shut the fuck up.

like seriously, if charles does not fight islam, who is a better contender at 155 right now? he's ranked #4 by the UFC, poirier and gaethje being above him. they both already got owned by the champ, so they're out of the picture right now. dariush is legit, but his resume is no more impressive than islam's and his streak is shorter. following in the rankings are RDA, gillespie, and mcgregor. it's clear that islam is the best of the bunch here and his claim is legit.

and khabib was always impressive, let's not pretend like he became a significantly different fighter after winning a title. i'm not denying he was improving, mind you, just pointing out that he was a beast from day one, it's just that when he held the belt and kept choking out the #1 challengers, people couldn't talk shit about him anymore.

and i'm not sure what you're talking about his LW reign being too short. who exactly do you think had a longer reign? he is tied with penn for 3 title defences, which is the most in UFC history. they both finished all 3 of their challengers. besides, i think most people who call him the LW GOAT simply mean that he would've beaten all lightweights we've seen so far. i'm not sure about his GOAT status either way, but he sure as fuck was impressive and his reign was literally the longest anyone's ever had at 155.
