Im on the last chapter of False Gods (book 2 of the Horus Herassy) I was expecting rhese books to be utter crap but honestly theyre pretty great 4/5. The series would make a very good big budget GOT style show and Erabus is one of the most hateful villans Ive come across in ages. Cant wait for the next one.

Ive also just finished the Andromeda Evolution. I love micheal Crichton and this was a bit like seeing a tribute act to your favourite band. Very enjoyable techno thriller 3.5/5

I'm on book 26 of the Horus Heresy, the 6th book in the Gaunt's Ghost series and I just finished Dark Imperium and I'm halfway through Plague War.

I've also read the Eisenhorn quadrilogy.

I think that comes out to finishing 35 40k novels in 3 years or about 12 books a year.

Which is funny because I remember seeing the covers to these books at Barnes and Noble and thinking who reads this shit.

I read this book growing up and saw it at the store the other day and decided to buy it. Currently reading it cause the book stuck with me. Anyone else read Hatchet as a kid?

Currently reading The Dark Forest by Cixin Liu, it’s light scifi, fun and quick. I spent the last 8 months reading mostly long dry history books and needed a change of pace, so I picked up the series (this is book 2). So far it’s about the impact of Earth making contact with an alien civilization, but there’s all kinds of intrigue and political shit involved too. The first volume flew by, this one is going quickly as well.

You're definitely right about the cover art, it was part of the reason i was reluctant to start the series. looks like its made for 5 year olds. The other thing putting me off was the sheer size of the universe and not knowing where to begin, where would you recommend going after the herassy books?

Super disapointed. Was expecting tales and accounts of dangerous Chechen Abreks. Instead got a bunch of pompous sexist bullshit written by a kid. I don't get why this book is such a classic.

The Horus Heresy is a massive series. I think the Heresy plus the Siege of Terra series that concludes it will be near 60 books. Not all the Heresy books are great or even necessary but I've decided to read them all eventually.

I would recommend the Gaunt's Ghosts series which follows a regiment of Imperial Guard. Pretty much anyone into 40k would recommend Gaunt's Ghosts as well as the Eisenhorn series which follows an Inquisitor and is written by Dan Abnett who wrote Horus Rising.

I don't think you can go wrong with anything by Dan Abnett, Aaron Dembski Bowden, Guy Haley or Chris Wraight.

I've got a huge pile of to be read 40K books outside of the Heresy and it pretty much consists of those authors.

I started with Horus Rising also and I would say that or Gaunt's Ghosts and Eisenhorn are some of the best ways to enter the universe.

I would say that if The Horus Heresy gets too daunting make sure to at least read The First Heretic, Know No Fear and Betrayer. It's a great little trilogy within the larger series.

Yeah it can be overwhelming but as long as you are interested in the universe you don't ever have to worry about finding something to read which I like.

There are four or five sequels to it as well as a book called “guts” where Paulson tells the stories of his motivation for certain parts of the story.

It’s also 4th grade level so why haven’t you finished it in one sitting?

Same here. I didn't much like the River. I heard good things about Cabin at the End of the World. I should definitely check it out

Reading “Undaunted Courage” right now about and it’s very interesting. I didn’t know much of anything about Meriwether Lewis and all that. I also picked up “Nothing Like It in the World,” by Stephen Ambrose, so that’s next on my list. I have a book buying problem but paper backs are are only $1 at the thrift store.

Speaking of the Horus Heresy and Warhammer novels in general are very entertaining. They strike me as a kind of like an 80’s action movie in novel form.

“Paul and Jesus: How the Apostle Transformed Christianity,” by James Tabor. Although it’s a little bit dishonest to say I’m reading it. I was, then put it down as I got busy with other things, and haven’t gotten back to it.
