Books you're reading now

I'm reading Disney War
It's about Michael Eisners rise to power in the 80's and 90's and it's really interesting so far
Talks about Disney being on hard times in the 80's, the making of Roger Rabbit, Disney passing on buying Pixar for a few million because they couldn't see the future of animation, Comcast's attempted hostile takeover, etc...

Not overly impressed so far but I've heard good things and I'm maybe a little further than half way through so it could pick up.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter.

The novel is tight, engaging and reminded me why I liked the first few seasons of Dexter so much.

The show was Fonz-esque in it's jumping of the shark. It took me a while to get over the disappointment and read this. Very glad I did.

going back to yet another of my all time favorite writers (coincidentally, the lengthy endorsement on the back of the book jacket was written by William H. Gass). Barthelme is always such a delight. his humor is matched only by Flann O’Brien & Cervantes, for me at least, & his short stories in particular are what i wish i had written before Barthelme did.

this should be an absolute joy.

from the Introduction:
[Eden, Eden, Eden] stinks of sperm and killing. It is a malignant orgasm . . . It will derange you and it will scar you.

^^ that was one of the most challenging books i’ve ever read, & easily the most challenging & exhausting book w/ < 200 pages that i’ve ever read

time to move onto some stuff way less demanding & something that will bring joy back into my life

Been putting this one off for a while because of it's length, but now seemed like an appropriate time for a post apocalyptic epic, about halfway through and loving it so far.

Man , this thread is making me feel inferior...but fuck it..

came across an article on the Chicago Tribune website that said this book (along w/ The Heap by Sean Adams) are must-reads for fans of Donald Barthelme, so figured i’d give it a go.

this was nothing short of a masterpiece. absolutely floored me. w/ the exception of Guyotat, Clarice is one of the most stylistically unique writers i’ve come across in awhile, the difference being Água Viva had a profound punch & existential depth, whereas Eden, Eden, Eden was a scarring challenge & a radical way of writing.

will definitely be reading Clarice’s other abstract & experimental novel, The Passion According to G.H., soon, & will need to start picking off some of her short story collections soon as well.
