I need a decent book. Halfway done with a current read. Anyone have a recommendation for a one off story? If the book isn't pricey and the summary seems ok. I will read the first response.

RUN MAN RUN by Chester Himes

I heard this is a great series. Have you read Malazan by Steven Erikson & Ian C. Esslemont?
I started the first one a long time ago and struggled to get into. I was like 21 at the time though and partying a lot so that may have been a factor

I made that post a while ago and have since finish all the stormlight books. Not sure how I feel about them overall, the story starts getting a little silly. He is an amazing story teller though and his writing is super engaging the whole time. You’ll never get bored of reading it, even if you do role your eyes when a character gets mad and turns super sayain

The first book is a little bit of a slog until you get to about 70 percent in and then it get its excitment and tension rachets up exponentially. The author purposely drops you off into the world in the middle of the story without any exposition so dont worry if you feel lost when reading the begining of the first book.

Malazan is a dense series but well worth. I've a decent amount of fantasy series and its by far my favorite.

I am listening to this right now on audio book. Only because of the Iron Maiden record with the same name.

Reading three books now. One is «the challenger sale». Another one is about Norse Mythology. And the last is about the Germany Brigade. A norwegian armed force serving in Post-WW2 Germany. My grand father, rest in peace, served in the unit.

Funny isn’t it how we can find new things by chance. You found a classic book through a legendary band. I now found a great song from one of my favorite bands after posting on a karate forum about the same book. All by chance.

The Arcane Casebook series by Dan Willis is HIGHLY recommended. Set in a 1930's where magic exists, Alex Lockerby is a P.I. - Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe, if they could cast spells... him interacting with his mentor, there are just the barest hints of Archie and Wolfe. I read the first 6 books in like 2 weeks. The pages flew by, excellent stories. Waiting on #7 to be finished written. The books are only like $5 each on Kindle. If Wolfe (Goodwin)/Spade/Marlowe with magic thrown in interests you, get this series ASAP

I am not going back through the rest of the thread, but have you checked out "The Dresden FIles" by Jim Butcher? Seems very much in the same vein, updated to modern day Chicago, but I would definitely recommend.

Secret Life of Trees
Pretty sure I watched a documentary with the exact same title. I would be shocked if it was not inspired by the book.

Dashiel Hammett is my current author. He wrote “The Maltese Falcon.” Read most of his works in the past few months. Next is Raymond Chandler, who did all the “Philip Marlowe” stuff.

Raymond Chandler is an amazing author, one of my personal favorites. His prose is riveting.

I've read the first 8 or so Dresden books. They're good, but I like Arcane Casebook much more.

Just finished this yesterday and it was fantastic. Closed the loop up nicely, some loved characters didn't make it, some got what they had coming, some of the outcomes surprised me, lots I didn't expect, and while it resolved the trilogy it put in place the seeds of future content. Sad it's over.

Abercrombie is in my top 3-4 All Time. Dude is awesome

I’m reading a series called Claw and Warder. Cheap ebooks for Kindle. Law and Order but supernatural cops. Written in the style of the show, and the characters are basically the exact same but for the names. Each cop pairing is a Claw (muscle) and Warder (magic). First half is police procedure second half really shines in the courtroom. Supernatural aspects aside, as a trial paralegal since 96 I find this pretty much the best written courtroom procedure material I’ve ever read (in my admittedly limited experience reading such, but I’m also including movies and tv shows seen in this)

Last finished

A bio on the only known North Korean defector who was born and raised inside a North Korean labor camp. Crazy stuff.

I haven't started the new trilogy yet. But Abercrombie is absolutely one of the best new authors in the fantasy genre to come out in the last decade or so. His First Law Trilogy and the 3 follow up books are some of my favorite reads ever. I'm going to pick this set up soon.
