It's a small town of about two fiddy, they voted to dissolve their government. The mayor said an influx of new residents from other states started the petition to avoid paying city taxes.

Assets will be transferred to the county, the county says they'll cover the roads but not street lights.

Good move or nah? I don't know the details.

I've lived in plenty of them, and this reeks of small town grudges. There's no fuckin way a huge influx of people from other states are moving into a town of 250 people in Kentucky and are pissed about taxes. I bet there's some juicy, more local reporting on the reasons for this.

Supposing the town's residents were paying taxes with little in return while having to pay the city's representatives salaries, sounds like a great idea.

Based off the local news clip it doesn't seem like they have a police department, and it says alot their biggest thing they noted would be no funding for a local 4th of July celebration.

The people who work in local politics get paid absolute dick, so if it is about that, it is probably more of a vendetta than a logical economic decision.

No this is happening a lot. Out of towners are buying land without stepping foot on it. Just a drone fly over. Sometimes it has a house or even a trailer on it and they move their residence there to dodge taxes. Just like John Kerry did with one of his yachts some time ago, though that wasn’t his residence obviously, before he ran for president.

Funny how you singled-out Kerry when there are Republicans in office right now in States they dont live in, by way of buying a trailer in the woods and having one piece of mail sent there.

Good job almost saying its not right to do that.
So strong; so brave.

Funny how you didn’t say that predator two is nearly as good as predator one or that you can use sour cream in place of heavy whipping cream or that yellow and blue make green. Pretty telling. This is why I can’t take your seriously

Annual. This is probably something we can just google since it should be public record.
I guess this is old news because I cannot find the mayors salary on here and their government is officially off the books

Edit: I was going to add that many employees go without a salary, and this is exactly what happened.

Only the clerk got paid. Everybody else did it for free. Government employees *can* get paid a lot, just not people involved in the political process. That is why they often resort to corrupt or shady practices.

I was being a smartass asking, I admit.
It showed the town's city hall in the news clip. It's an old rundown garage from what looked to be the 1950s, so chances are they're not getting paid much.

But a more relevant issue is what the residents are paying in property taxes every year to the town.

Until I got a job working in the county government, I wasn’t aware that you can easily look up the salaries of government employees and living in a large county, it was eye-opening to find out who gets paid what. I thought it would have to be a process that pretty much only people working in the media would have the motivation to look up.

People involved in politics get paid nothing, it is the county lawyers, police, and fire-rescue who get paid all the money. If anything, politicians need a raise like in Singapore, because all the talented people are employed elsewhere.

I can't recall when I heard this, but I believe in the mid-2000s a Californian small-city there was a revolt amongst the citizens about city officials setting themselves up, in secret, to get giant retirement pensions.

Like the city fire chief was about to retire and get $500K/year.

Absolutely horrendous.

An tip from city hall to the local news lit the fire, and it inspired protests, and fixes were made.

Off-subject of course. Don't mean to imply this small town had officials that were getting paid big bucks for practically nothing.

In bumfuck Kentucky? I don't buy it.

Here is a website for investors or people interesting in buying properties talking about the positives of buying land in Kentucky.

Nashville became the biggest city in Tennessee due to people moving to it or buying land around it.
