Is it bad that I'm a 40 year old male and have never seen the original Blade Runner? It's not like I've been living under a rock, it's just one of those movies I've never gone out of my way to watch.

My buddy has tried several times to watch it and he just can't get the appeal. It's too slow moving to be an action film. It's too experimental and weird to be a noir thriller. The music either makes it feel other-worldly or just plain old.

'2049' feels like an eighties title. I kind of dig it.

It fits so perfectly.

Just got round to watching the original today.

Got to admit it was pretty poor, good effects for the time but the story was thin to say the least.

Watched it today as well for the first time. I watched the "Final Cut - Special Edition".

Interesting set pieces and good effects are about the only things I can say as a positive for it.

Otherwise, it just felt very odd. Weird pacing, weird dialog, seemingly no coherency, odd scene start/finishes.

Maybe I just don't get it, but it did nothing for me.

Probably taking a cue from Stranger Things that "retro" is the in thing nowadays.

It sure is, the new taylor swift song rips cues of 80s inspired synth wave, thanks to stranger things the cyberpunk sound is now back to the mainstream. Also heard fashion is moving from retro 70s to retro 80s.

Had to study it in school back in 07. They claimed it was "sci fi classic from the 80s", I was expecting Star Wars (maybe a bit of irobot which had come out a few years earlier). Instead I got what you mention.

Much later I began to take an interest in futurism. The 80s futures of total recall, the running man, robocop (and the present of terminator), all films I loved, had a clear precedent in blade runner (also in escape from New York and the warriors but blade runner seemed to codify that cyberpunk look).

I rewatched it on blue ray focusing on the world design and atmosphere and was blown away, compared to so many future films I've watched it was so much more gritty and "real".

How do you not know Ryan Gosling? The dude's been mainstay in the film industry for like 15 years now.

Secondly, I have not seen a single film he's been in,
hence I know him by name only.

He is an excellent choice. Not only is he a box office draw, his approach to acting implements a lot of physicality including the stillness that BLADE RUNNER often employs. He's got a subtle weirdo quality about him that really helps, too.

Edward James Olmos Confirms His Return for BLADE RUNNER 2049

Edward James Olmos, the actor who is today best known for playing William Adama on Battlestar Galactica and who has also appeared on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, had a memorable role in the original Blade Runner veteran blade runner Eduardo Gaff, who meets with an observes Deckard.

Despite Olmos’ best attempts to keep things quiet, rumors have spread that Gaff will be back in Blade Runner 2049. During an interview on TheTRENDTalk, Olmos finally gave up and confirmed that he will be in Blade Runner 2049.

“This is the first time that I am telling everybody, and I’m telling the world right now, that yes, I am going to be Gaff in Blade Runner 2049,” Olmos said.

Olmos then offered a few more details about Gaff's role in the sequel.

“It's not about Gaff, but it's about someone who is going to try to find out certain things about us who were back then,” Olmos explained. “They come to me. I’m retired”

He also explained that he had to lie about the role otherwise dodge questions due to an extensive agreement.

“I signed a seven-page non-disclosure contract with those people. My agent did, my manager did, I did, everybody did. So I couldn’t talk about it. I couldn’t talk to anybody about it.”

Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario), the film stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Jared Leto, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, and Dave Bautista. Blade Runner 2049 opens on October 6, 2017.
