BJJ, Strength & Air Traffic Control

BF update pic this AM. Didn't check weight but I think bodyfat is around 10%?

photo2-4.jpg

As I get leaner and leaner I realize how little muscle I have. No wonder last year people at jiu-jitsu said I was getting too skinny!

Gonna binge a bit hard tonight w/ coworkers since we all killed that eval from yesterday. I feel sooo fucking good now knowing my job is secure. Mostly alcohol cals will be in store.

Gonna do my squat workout and BJJ today then go out. For PWO nutrion gonna make some protein cookie dough and nail around 100g protein. Then the rest of the night will whatever.

LISS
35 minutes treadmill incline

-Had some good sushi, about 6 beers, some sake, couple slices of pizza and some ice cream and cheese cake last night. Pretty successful :)

-BJJ wasn't bad. We worked on attacking turtle into some arm bars and clock choke stuff. Rolled only one 5-minute round with a big new blue belt and did really well, getting a few taps via toe hold and triangle.

-Start new work schedule now so no BJJ tomorrow :( Going back down for a private lesson w/ my old instructor on Tuesday.

Don't feel like doing a full log entry but did a row/chin workout today fasted. Took a 45 minute nap, woke up sweaty on my couch and rolled out to BJJ. Felt so exhausted and slogged through the session.

BJJ

Private lesson with my old instructor. We went over how to attack half guard when they have a foot on your hip and a strong vertical knee shield.

Big-picture stuff:

-Clamp down and immobilize your opponent whenever possible to nullify their offensive ability. Bring your butt in close to them, bring their heel to their butt and use your elbow to block their bottom knee from coming out for triangles/arm bars etc. Different from using inside pants grips that kind of negate your ability to use your elbow as a BLOCK against their knee.

Once you have your opponent clamped down, then evaluate the situation. You don't want them to have control of the pace and to constantly be changing the "game board" by moving around, setting things up that you have no idea of. If you can shut them down and halt the action, then you're in control and can figure out how to solve the problem. It puts you on a level playing field against somebody who may know 5x as many moves as you.

-When passing the knee shield, your clamp down with a grip on their belt on the knee-shield side and with your other hand grip their sleeve. They'll probably have a grip on your sleeve too so just equalize it so you are both grabbing each others sleeves on that side. With that elbow, use it to both block their knee from coming out from under you and also leverage your weight on/against it. This effectively kills their dangerous leg. It's truly the leg that's UNDER you that is the threat, not the knee shield leg. That is just a defensive wall for the most part. You pass by sprawling, keeping your left elbow and hip weight on that bottom leg/knee to keep it immobile. Bring yourself close to his hips and with your right side grip, and his shin in your bicep bring his foot all the way to his butt. This closes the angle completely and renders that leg useless--He has no power and no space to use that leg.

Pass by bringing your REAR KNEE up and REPLACING your left elbow block. Constantly you are blocking that left side hip and by keeping pressure on that side of him he can't use his bottom leg. When you replace your elbow pressure with your rear knee, you have passed his half guard and he can't do anything.

-Generally, you should aways concentrate on passing with the rear knee. It's not the front leg that does the passing--if your rear leg has passed, then you have passed.

When doing the knee slice pass from standing half guard, yes you generally DO need the underhook. It'll be a fight often and if you're passing and he manages to steal the underhook, you don't have to back off completely. Use your right forearm like a wrestler's single tie on his head and put pressure there as you pass. Worst case scenario is he may come up to his knees and you will be on top turtle. Best case is you beat him around (by turning the corner faster than he can come up) and pass anyway.

-Always replace pressure or blocks with another pressure point or block. Never remove something without something else there to retain the pressure. Case in point, when passing the knee shield half guard your left elbow is replaced by your rear knee.

From knee on belly, I have been leaning way too far forward. Pop up to KoB and right away bring your chest up, using your hips and back as in a deadlift upright. This also keeps your lapels far away from their reach and you won't be rolled over by a big strong guy who would just grab and throw you off.

This was a lot to take in and just typing it up is reminding me of the small details we covered. It was a really thorough lesson and it's mind-blowing how many tiny details get glossed over when you're NOT getting private instruction.

Money-permitting I can see the huge value in getting a couple of private lessons per month even. Something to consider.

BJJ

Stayed for the hour and a half class after my private. LOTS of movement drills that other gyms don't do. It was very grueling for me since I haven't done stuff like this in a long while. At my home gym we'll usually just do a set of shrimps and forward/backward rolls for a warm up. This "warm up" was almost an hour long and really tough.

Then we went into basic guard passing and rolling. Went with a white belt and a few blues. Kinda struggled with being on top in side control and people using their leg flexibility to jump their hips up and "scrape" my head off of them. Usually caught in a harmless, armless triangle but it can still be dangerous if it prevents me from staying on top.

It was a great, exhausting almost 3 hours of training. I really feel like I learned a good amount in the private and got some basic movement work in during the class.

Two of the guys I started BJJ with are getting their purple belts in a few weeks. One of them I have always been 100% even with all the way through our journeys, while the other guy has always been a cut above me. They are both former wrestlers and have similar top heavy, low passing styles that focus on basic head and arm chokes, guillotines and arm bars. I have a feeling that if I stayed at this gym that I too would be getting my purple alongside these guys now.

Even though I won't get promoted for a long time I don't think it is still cool to see guys of similar skill/experience getting promoted.

I left the gym with five different mat burn blisters on my toes and on top of my feet. I don't know why, since I have been on the mat consistently for months now. Maybe the different mat material at this gym.

Closing in on 600 hours of total training. Feels like just the other day I was writing about getting to the 500 hour mark. This journey is flying by!

Man - you've made some drastic changes! Congrats on all of the work in here.

Man! There have definitely been some changes over the years. Strength hasn't really moved, but BJJ time is the one constant that is growing like a weed.

Thanks for the props Obliv :)

-Wow. Strength continues to plummet every week it seems. It's not too shocking being on a cut and all, and with my volume being so minimal. It's no big deal...I'm almost at the bodyfat % I want to be. Once I get a little leaner I'm going to switch things up in a big way.

-Was going to go to gi class tonight, but I realized my schedule is all nights starting tomorrow. My feet are all torn up and I feel lethargic and sleepy.

The schedule means that I can train Friday AM, Saturday AM and Sunday AM. So taking tonight off is fine...I have 3 hours for the week so far and with Fri/Sat/Sun I'll have a nice 6 hours of BJJ for this week.

BJJ

Went over drills on troubleshooting passing open guard. If they have double hooks, DLR, spider grips etc. Oh also warmed up with a judo throw I'd never learned.

Rolling went great; performed awesomely and smoothly against one of our better purple belts and also did fine with the other blues and whites (older guys).

Instead of feeling pressure or anxiety, I just thought to myself to flow with the go and do whatever when it came time to roll. Awesome day, feeling good.

No time for a specific writeup cuz gotta get to work. This rainy ass day is my first day controlling live traffic in NY!

BJJ (no-gi)

Great training session. Went over a few finishes from the back based on attacking rear naked chokes and countering their various defenses. One to an arm bar, a triangle and also just finishing the choke.

Rolling went great. Went from the feet and went with a couple of purples and white belts. Performed great with everyone...Have I used the word 'great' enough yet? Training is going very well! And bodyfat is really nicely in check too.

Dunno...I have an old cell # of his. I'll shoot a text and see if he's ok.

Sup fool, I deleted my fb because I got very tired of seeing a bunch of bullshit from my old gym. Who's this Korean fellas askin' bout me?

Looking jacked too bro, getting some new ink?

Oh btw I got my dad into flying and he bought a bonanza about a month ago. It's fucking rad.

Drama-type bullshit? Ce la vie..

Yeah some new ink, gettin more this week. This log should be titled "BJJ & ATC" because there has been no strength going on in here. My arms are 14", don't let the leanness deceive you bro.

Your dad BOUGHT a bonanza?? Nice! I'm off to your log to talk about aviation stuff.

Fasted, 5g creatine mono, 14g BCAAs, 1 serving Cellucor Super HD fat burner

Conditioning
12 minute LISS run outside
~25 minutes MMA conditioning circuit
10 minute hard run outside

Notes

-I ordered a bunch of tasty flavored whey protein products from Cellucor and they included a month's supply of their fat burner, Super HD.

The one ingredient in this fat burner that made me worried was yohimbine. I've tried this in the past for fat loss, and the effects are basically cocaine-like. Extreme energy, anxiety, insomnia...It's generally a very strong stimulant for me.

I took one pill this morning and within 2 hours I was feeling the effects.

Went to BJJ for open mat but nobody was there to train. There was a kids private lesson going on and a pro fighter was training for a fight this week. So I did an improvised circuit of:

Sprints, bear crawls, sit outs, crab walks, heavy bag guard holds, stand in base knee kicks, Gi chins etc. Worked myself pretty hard and the Super HD was giving me INSANE energy. I felt like I couldn't get rid of all the energy it was giving me. I can totally see how this makes people lose weight by proxy of basically FORCING them to expend energy.

The label says to work up to 2 servings twice a day. I took one serving and feel like I'm going to explode so no way in fucking hell will I increase the dose. The thought of going to work to sit on my ass for 8 hours tonight makes me cringe. I just want to keep moving, keep running, just go go go!!!!!!

PLANS

So I will continue in a deficit for about another week and take this fat burner as long as I can tolerate it. By that I mean if I can sleep at night then we'll be good.

After that I'm moving into a very tightly controlled calorie surplus and a 6-day/week bodybuilding-focused program. I want to put on some legit size and get my strength back up.

Jiu-jitsu has been on a tear lately and it saddens me to have to take a few days off next week after my next tattoo session. I want to wrap this piece up ASAP and my artist is moving in September so this summer will have a few more interruptions. No more tats for a LONG time after that.

EDIT:

This shit is killing my appetite, too. Three spoonfuls into eating my first meal of the day---Fiber one raisin bran, milk w/ chocolate whey, peanut butter and a banan--I felt like unghhh I'm not hungry anymore. Weird...

Drama and self promoting bs that got very old.

14"? Bro, do you even lift?haha

And yes he got a 1975 A36 bonanza with a 550 conversion so we got 300HP and can get about 170kts TAS. It's sweet as fuck, I love it.

Over to my log to respond.

I wonder if Ath should return and begin a new log to avoid being recognized by undesirables. What do you think?

Over 1,700 posts would be a shame to go to waste. Re-light the legacy if you so wish...I didn't know your internet presence was so publicly known.

Neither did I until October 2011 when I e-nuked myself!

Ok please visit my new log entitled "Former Athahlete".

I need to get some of that good crack you got! Tons of energy and reduced appetite?!?! Sounds like what I need.

And oh yeah, I hate the belt promotion stuff. It turned into a whoever plays ball gets promoted thing. I had four stripes and had them come off and didn't put them back on. Next promotion day (they started having "seminars" with our regular instructors on a promotion day so they could charge for rankings), several guys get promoted and I'm not hoping for anything. The coach knew I had four stripes, I didn't care if I got my purple or not, but he called me up and put two stripes on my belt and I was pissed.

I don't understand the reasoning. I competed, I fought, I trained as much or more and longer than everyone else. I can't say that I was ready for the purple, but I was definitely on a different level than these other blue belts (some of them now outranked me).

I wish I had a place to train no gi and forget about the belt system. I always enjoyed no gi more anyways and all of my favorite techniques went out the door when my old gym went to exclusively gi classes.

That belt shit would piss me off. You've been training for like 6-7 years already haven't you?? I mean whose dick do you have to suck to get a purple belt around there...
