BJJ, Strength & Air Traffic Control

I'm not extremely familiar but isn't it pretty taxing? I feel like the bodybuilding split will give me the hypertrophy gains I want and also be low intensity enough not to interfere with BJJ.

It is low intensity, but the accumulated fatigue is pretty high, from what I understand. I just like using you as a guinea pig. Do what ya feel. I may hop on your bodybuilding nuts eventually anyway. :D

Next thing you know, the Ath-ah-lete is gonna be shaving his chest and joining you guys.

BJJ (gi)

Worked an alternate to a double leg if they sprawl; head on the inside, you run your feet in front of them while you turn the corner and move your near hand to their lat. If they manage to keep standing when you run, straighten your rear leg and trip them backwards while torquing with the lat holding hand.

Went with a 250lb brown belt and a smaller, new wrestler. The brown belt was more of a rec guy I think, and is not the type of brown belt I want to be. Everything he did seemed to take great effort and there was not much finesse to his technique. From my guard he eventually passed to half guard and finished me with a lapel choke after much effort and struggling. The wrestler gave me one hell of a time, because nothing I was doing seemed to work very well. Worked from my guard, open guard, butterfly guard...None of my sweeps or sub attempts were working. Very frustrating.

Dude just log again, period. What have you been spending your time doing these days?

I liked that username wayyy better. Back in the days of the American flag speedo!

Bodybuilding split? Sounds like you need the Dorian av back.

What is that?

LISS 15 minutes

BJJ (gi)

Went over high closed guard attacks; cross collar choke, scissor sweep, and a few variations on pendulum sweep that I hadn't seen before.

Rolling was pretty bad, though. Got messed up by the 2 blues I went with, guys who in the past I have usually done so-so with but tonight they had my number. Had my way with two white belts, and left with bad finger pain in my left hand's digits. Maybe from playing too much spider guard and lingering injury from 2009.

BJJ (no-gi)

Went over some barbed wire type transitions from north/south for when they are grabbing your torso. Worked them into a triangle, arm bar. Also worked from the other side which is a little different; wrap the head and arm then mount to triangle.

Rolled with this one guy who I thought was a sick wrestler, turns out he just does BJJ but has a sick double leg. I talked to him about it and he said what makes it so good is he is 100% committed to it every time, no hesitation at all. The other thing he said is he plants his forehead directly in the guys stomach. I remember his double leg being so powerful and knocking the wind out of me as he put me on my back before. So these are two good details I got from him. Our match was heated, he got me with a couple of things though I don't remember exactly.

Rolled with a bigger blue belt who I always have good technical rolls with, though he isn't too aggressive. We had a great back and forth for two rounds--I keep getting caught in deep half guard and put on my butt, and this happens with evvvveryone since it seems every blue belt in the world right now is focused on deep half. I think there is a deep half killer dvd somewhere that I should look at...Anyway I got him once with a deep arm bar from knee on belly.

BJJ (gi)

Warmed up with judo throws and went into the crucifix from turtle. Drilled it into two chokes, then did some clock chokes from turtle into a choke that my instructor back home shows a lot but I have never internalized.

Rolled with a blue belt about my size and dominated him pretty well, maintained mount/side control/knee on belly a lot and surfed a lot, looked for choke and things but his gi was kind of hard to work with and the collar was very loose. Think I got an arm bar but that was it. Oh and hit the double leg really nicely on him from standing, keeping the new details I had just learned in mind. Also cupped behind both of his legs like I learned at the other gym, not trying to lock my hands behind him. All these details, and things are finally starting to come together!

Good night overrall.

Couple things..

Moving back east on the 11th officially; doing a huuge cross country drive from Cali to Philly. Thinking about planning some BJJ stops along the way and maybe bumming couches to crash on. It'd be cool to blog about and would save a ton in motel costs.

Really excited to get back east and start training with Team Lloyd Irvin! The gym I'll be at in particular is extremely competition oriented and is probably the toughest place I've ever trained, so I know it'll be hard but I'm sure to get a lot better there.

Good luck with the move! My buddies and I made a couple cross-country road trips, the longest being Chicago to San Diego via Route 66, which was pretty sweet. The only thing that sucks is you end up eating like shit, but it's thankfully short lived. A cross country BJJ tour would be pretty sick though!

So I'm sitting here at Barnes and Noble doing school work and of course, my mind starts thinking about jiu-jitsu.

From last night, and after watching even moaaar videos, I'm feeling slightly better about throat-crushing/guillotines. Something I'm doing that is helping a lot is using my chest more effectively. It's not just an arm submission, and they will of course try to pull back or out so using your chest heavy on top of their head, forcing their head and neck down into your choking hand/forearm is really good. Even if the choke doesn't work, their posture is still all fucked up and you can switch to attacking turtle, front head lock or whatever from there.

When rolling with white belts or people I am definitely better than, I *need* to work new things and try new stuff. I experimented with the double leg stuff and guillotines last night and it was great. I felt like I was opening up and expanding my game, instead of just playing the same old shit I do when trying to win, win, win. Who cares about winning in the gym? It's not all about ego, and I've felt myself getting into a rut by only playing my game and not trying out new stuff. Don't roll to always smash the other guy. ESPECIALLY white belts--they are like training dummies (no disrespect) to try out new stuff on. On higher belts, sure I will work my game and try to win but rolling in the gym needs to be a variety of experiences and goals.

So I'm coming up on my 3 year mark of training and will close in on 500 hours total mat time as my goal before the end of October. This is a good rate I feel like, and my mindset is totally focused on getting to purple belt level. Not on GETTING the actual purple belt, but just getting to that skill level. So lots to work on and yet I feel I am getting closer, inch by inch. Everyone's journey is different and it takes longer for some than others to get to a certain skill level, so I'm not trying to rush but at the same time I don't want to drag my feet and take twice as long to get to purple than I could otherwise. Just going through the motions at the gym and not actively working to get better and learn, every single class is going to maybe halve my progression rate. Again, it's just about making effective use of my time and efforts in the gym.

Good shit as usual. I think think Bill Cooper has a Deep Half Guard killer DVD if you know where to look *wink wink hint hint*

I love the fact you mentioned you wanted a purple belt skill level, and not just a purple belt.

Guillotines are awesome by the way. My highest % sub, and pretty much the only thing I hit on huge guys.

-Abs and vascularity are fading; weight gain might be coming too quickly, but I'll wait and see a couple weeks.

BJJ (gi)

Worked more closed guard stuff; attacking collar chokes, into an arm bar into a triangle. Good chain, I liked it. Rolled from closed guard with our purple belt instructor. Only rolled with him once before but I do well with him. From closed guard we went 8 minutes with no sweeps or passes...I was working arm drags on everyone tonight, and while I was able to gift wrap him a couple of times I couldn't take the back or sweep very well. Tried some pendulum sweeps, his base was pretty good but my grip strips were on point. Eventually swept him on a knee bar attempt.

Also went with a blue belt and kept closed guard the same way, tried the same stuff like arm drags but he is more aggressive and eventually passed me after I tried the same knee bar -> sweep. Not opening my guard preemptively anymore, because I want to work my closed guard and it's a lot less risky. Why open your guard for the guy and do all the work for him?

Lastly went with a smaller, new white belt and did exactly what I sought out to do, try new stuff. Worked arm drags with various grips, gift wrap stuff, spider guard sweep, triangle series and the barbed wire series to triangle from north south we learned yesterday. He was very thankful for me showing him some things too so that is nice.

Great night of training. I feel like the mentality I talked about earlier is making all the difference. Who cares about getting taps in the gym, I just want to get better.

Fasho. I searched for that but I don't think they have it?

Ya man I need to bring up my guillotines. You get 'em just as much in the gi?

In that last video of you rolling (3rd post) What did he tap from? lol didn't look like you had the knee extended yet. Was he tapping early to the heal hook position?

Probably early to a knee bar.

-Felt weak, mentally and physically all day for some reason...

BJJ (no-gi)

Review of the barbed wire triangles from the other night; felt good. Then worked a butterfly backwards sweep to heel hook. Pretty tired so don't feel like logging much else.

BJJ (gi)

A bunch of different, cool gi chokes involving wrapping the lapel in different ways. Neck is feeling really raw.

-Benching felt great, strong and easy. Had to cut the workout a few sets short because jiu-jitsu was starting.

BJJ (no-gi)

Coach asked us if we had questions and I asked right away, about people standing up with me when I fall back for ankle locks. He addressed this by showing how, when they stand up and we have our legs wrapped, to move the outside foot into the inside of his thigh, the other foot to the other achilles and push both out, with feet only no hands. They fall down and you can re-wrap the ankle or open guard pass. We drilled it a bit, as well as the other guy's defense to a foot lock (push the top foot off, slide onto the leg, come up to s-mount).

Rolled with a small, muscular pro fighter and a wrestler. With the pro we had back and forth, though I felt I was using my size well and flattened him out in half guard, then knee on belly and he rolled up to turtle and I hooked in my legs and rolled for an arm bar; he fought it for a while but I eventually got it, nice and deep. With the wrestler, had a HELL of a time...Man in no-gi especially these wrestlers can be a real pain. He tapped me eventually with an arm-tap triangle from his closed guard.

Both tough rolls so I called it a day and rolled out to Chipotle :D

Weight was 168 the other day, so I will recheck every week or bi-weekly and monitor this closely. I don't seem to be putting on much fat, but I *am* noticing some muscle size gains. Usually I have a good eye for small changes, whether good or bad. So far I am really liking the bodybuilding training and the extra eating :P

-Felt good, had a small pre-workout meal. Ran out of Xtend and won't be getting anymore until I get to Philly, so no more fasted workouts until then. I feel like performance may be a little better with a small meal in my belly.
