BJJ belts in ur school

They should NEVER change this belt system they have in place.

White > Blue > Purple > Brown > Black

It gives true meaning to getting your belt. Instead of just getting one every year.

I agree.

You hear a lot of people complain about too many "between" belts, saying that belts don't matter. If that's the case, what does it matter if your school throws a yellow, orange, or green belt in between?

A couple guys have said the same thing, but I'll quote this one.

We're pretty traditional about belts at my academy (Gracie Barra Mamazinho), which is one of the reasons I chose the academy I did. I'll look forward to the opportunity to get my blue belt and so on. But I really just want to learn jiu jitsu and get really, really good at it. I prefer gi jiu jitsu, so I'll always be wearing a belt of some sort. But it really is just to keep my jacket closed as far as I'm concerned..

i like this guy's thinking. i'm gonna be a whitey for a long time coming yet though and it would be nice to see a blue tinge to the light at the end of the tunnel, even if it is other white belts catch their blues.

White>blue>purple>brown>black until 6th degree> alternating red to black 7&8 degree> solid red.

Of course we have stripes in between to show progress. Each belt takes about one year to get.

I started reading this thread and came across a part about how the grandmaster is still alive, then realized how old it was lol

In my school, there are yellow, orange, and green belts for people too young to get the blue. In this case, it's good, because it's not only a way to "award" some of the kids, but a way to show that they know their stuff. But in the state of Minas Gerais, I hear they give yellow belts to adults, and ban the americana in competition. I've seen a small fellow from Minas in a competition with a yellow belt, probably in his mid-thirties and weighing a fancy 130 kg.

I tried some bullshit selfdefence jiu jitsu before BJJ, after 6 months I got my first belt, did I deserve it? Hell no, I sucked donkeyballs at it and I couldn`t care less about getting the belt, it means absolutely nothing to me.
That`s one of the things that makes BJJ so great, the belts actually mean something, when I get my blue it will make me feel that I accomplished something.

Leave it to a white belt to bump a thread from 2005.

I left a school that had that different color belt system between white and blue, and basically started over at white, no stripes.

You need to make sure the school is legit. They certainly could be, as there are many legit black belts that have added a belt between white and blue, but if they are testing every two months and have a million different colors, buyer beware.

Do you ever get a chance to come to the main school in STL and train?

For what its worth, I know that University of Jiu Jitsu (Xande and Saulo's school) have green belts between white and blue. I was talking to someone at the school about it and its really more for outsiders. I could be wrong but the gist of the discussion was that, they didn't want people who were just starting out as white belts, to feel like they were just getting absolutely demolished by other white belts. The green belt was sort of a belt that was given to say, this person is still a white belt, but definitely not a beginner and should be getting his blue soonish.

Yeah stripes work that way too, but I guess that its easier to differentiate with colors.

Not yet. Rodrigo came out here for a seminar and that was great, but I've not made it down to STL yet.

My wife has a good friend there, so I'm sure we'll be making a trip soon to visit.

The old standard: white->blue->purple->brown->black; white through brown is 4 stripes on each belt before the next promotion.

For kids under 16: white->yellow->orange->green; same 4 stripes per belt until the next advancement.

i'm a white belt and i'm cool with the traditional 5 color scheme. what do you guys think of the stripe stuff? some schools do it, some don't. seems like it would be really variable from school to school. is a 3-stripe white THAT MUCH DIFFERENT from a 1-stripe white???

Depends on the instructor. At my gym there is a huge difference between each stripe no matter what belt you are. Took me about 6 months to get one stripe, and another 4 to get two stripes. Thats almost a year of training for two stripes, so like I said, depends on the instructor

#1, this thread is from 2005. WTF MAN?

#2, They dont have Green Belts. They have people who come from other schools put on a white, with a stripe of your belt rank. I.E. A purple comes in, and wears a white belt with a purple stripe, until Saulo & Xande approve of your skills, then you wear your normal belt.

Thats what is commonly believed anyway...

do all gatekeepers have to have 4 stripes?
