BJJ belts in ur school

They should NEVER change this belt system they have in place.

White > Blue > Purple > Brown > Black

It gives true meaning to getting your belt. Instead of just getting one every year.

Agreed. And a standard belt system gives you a good idea of skill levels. For instance, I know I can roll evenly with young blue belts, could keep up with older blue belts, possibly survive against a purple belt, but get smashed by anything above that.

It's fine the way it is.

thats the way for me, And I bet it will take more then 2 years.

It is a long time.

I remenber reading a post about a dude that flew overseas to compete in BJJ.
the guy sitting next to him on the plane was making small talk:
So what is the reason for your travel?
I am going to compete in BJJ.
Oh, I see. You must be good. What color belt are you?
I am only a white belt.
The other dude was like speechless. Thinking WTF a white belt!!

my school uses stripes for white belts but after you get to blue it's traditional.

White, Blue, Purple, Brown, Black for adults... with stripes in between.

White->Green->Blue->Purple->Brown->Black

The belts are just to establish the order of respect in the academy...people make a big deal out of them for nothing really and most of the time a function of time and dedication.

Americans are lazy bastards that need someone constantly letting them know that they are unique and special...more belts and stipes are a function of student retention above all else.

in my BJJ school we had the standard belt system
white blue purple brown black.

For some of the academy guys there were stripes, for the competition guys he had the stance that you were either a blue belt or a purple and that the stripe stuff was nonsense

my take on it is if you need to change the color of your belt when you go compete (like changing your green belt for a blue belt) then it's wrong.

We have the standard white, blue, purple, brown and black.

I was just wondering what the belt structure is in peoples schools around world. example white to blue and so forth....my school has just adopted different colors inbetween white and blue. is that common for adult training.

thanx......

LOS

doesnt sound legit to me

standard belt system is perfect.. if you haven't got your blue and so forth... STFU and keep working.. If I told you my story it too would have you being pissed about belts. But I learned "when the pupil is ready the master will appear". in saying so I mean it all has its time and place.. and it is not just about tapping people it is about the exp.

We have the traditional white, blue, purple, brown, and black with 4 strips on each belt. But like i just told my sensi im not worried about getting belts or strips as long as i learn something everyday and feel like im getting better.

I haven't started training yet but I would be looking for a place that honors the traditional belt system.
But for kids, who cares. 20 belts whatever. Stripes, dots, stars. Let them enjoy themselves and see tangible rewarded progress.

Agreed! Our gym doesn't have any of these "stripes" that I hear alot about on here.

What is wrong with a green belt. It is a way to award someone for work. The instructor makes more difference than the color of a damn belt. Some places use stripes and others use belts.

i'm a white belt and i'm cool with the traditional 5 color scheme. what do you guys think of the stripe stuff? some schools do it, some don't. seems like it would be really variable from school to school. is a 3-stripe white THAT MUCH DIFFERENT from a 1-stripe white???

the difference is huge in my gym
