BJ Penns wasted end to his career.

Anybody recall what a roided out (allegedly) freak Sherk was before BJ took his soul?

In fact, let's get some perspective up in this bitch.

That is just a fraction of the beatdowns BJ put on the greats of his era.

I guess TS wanted BJ to pad his record with Lightweight scrubs.

Thank god BJ is not about that

My gosh that 3rd Frankie fight was a horrendous beatdown. Worse than what GSP did to him.

Meh. He knew after the Frakie fight that he wouldn't be getting another shot at the 155 lbs belt anytime soon. So he moved up to 170, a division where he was very successful before and tried to put another titlerun together. In the end he just got old. Imo people put to much emphasis on the tail ends of a fighters career anyway.

I do respect the fuck outa BJ. But beating 1 man twice at WW is not very respectful. Props to beating prime Hughes though. Maj victory.

Edit: his wins vs Sherk, Stevenson, Diego, Kflo are sick.

Are you discrediting BJ fucking Penn's career? Jesus how short sided we are. He was the baddest dude out there for years, even if he didn't win all his fights. Dude was the definition of MMA fighter during the era he fought in.

you could say the same thing for mark hunt, doesn't make him a great

Oy. Here's an interview with Jens Pulver, former bitter enemy of Penn, who was cheering for him ringside in his last fight.

I thought Penn won the first two and the third was a 10-8. It was a draw, IMO.

That said, skill wise, Penn proved that if he didn't gas, he probably wins that fight. Then again, isn't the partially the story of Penn's career.

One thing that gets me around here is how often greatness is hated on. Fighter's hit certain apexes and do things that other people can't even fathom and it isn't enough. MMA fans are fucking horrible. If this was another sport, it would be like people hating on Terrell Davis for his injuries after the things he did while healthy.

I'm not going to say there isn't an argument to be made that BJ won the first two rounds, my point was that considering how badly he was beaten up in the third, that fight wasn't helping earn him a title shot.

The way his career ended made me very sad, he's always been one of my favorite fighters. He accomplished incredible things and did so in ways very few could even dream of doing.

"Putting in a minimal effort into sharpening his skill set."

Ridiculous statement BJ was one of the most skilled fighters ever. He certainly did not loaf on skill training and likely brought an unusual more technique focused training style to MMA.

He may not have trained as hard as some when it came to skill training but still he was likely one of the few clean fighters in the PED era.

you have 0 fucking proof of this, other then the fact he never tested positive. Neither did georges, yet bj had no problem accusing him. Not a good arguing point.

Bad endings is simply the way shit works in combat sports, and sports in general. If you only judge by the ending, you're a fucking twat and an imbecile.

Penn's strength of schedule to end his career is fucking insane. No one has really fought murderer's row talent like that at three divisions (mostly two, I know). He had a frame for a 145'er and held belts at 155 and 170. Penn is one of the gifted athletes in the sport with an insane mentality. It never came together and his preparation and approach derailed him, but he did stuff no one else has ever really done.

He's the fighter who closely resembled the fighter's spirit -- anyone, any time, anywhere.

and here we go. Now let's pretend bj had a 145er's frame this whole time. bj looked like irwin on cutnight when he made 145, and he fought like shit. let's not start pretending the guy is a natural 145. He looked like he was going to die at 145 and it essentially retired him.

to the death georges.

you could argue that the people like yourself who worship the guys losses to guys like lyoto only utilize context. He didn't win the fight, let it go.

He has a spotty record sure, but that comes with the territory when you fight outside your natural weightclass, and past your prime. At the end of the day he was a two division champ, and one of the most impressive fighters ever. His slump at the end of his career doesn't change that. Same for Fedor, Anderson, Hughes, etc.

Why the hate? The man is indisputably the best 155'er ever with most UFC title defenses (tied with Bendo at 3), and BJ finished all of his.

Let's just talk about Sherk. The guy was a fuckin' juggernaut who came into the BJ title fight at 34-2, with his only losses a competitive 5-round decision to Hughes for the title, and a loss to GSP, both at 170. He had recently come off ass-raping Florian for the 155 belt. And BJ wrecked him.

You don't have to like the guy, but the man is a legend for a reason.

His last great fight was beating Diego Sanchez - he could have retired after that. Great fight. Rare 5th round stoppage.

Nothing worth while after that. I don't count him knocking out the already battle ravaged Matt Huges as a highlight either.
