lol duh. Sometimes I dont think before I ask. Next question, this is also going to be dumb but I have to know before I fuck up. The speeds; My guess is its like a car... 1st to start off, etc up up, or am I wrong? I don't want to get one and be one my way and pop the chain off. I've been 100% a runner for cardio my whole life so sorry for being so dumb. Only bike I've ever owned was a GT Dyno BMX bike that I put GYRO() on. lol

a singlespeed bike is a good way to go as long as you can handle it and you live in a flat enough area.

Don't buy a single speed...single speeds are for town bikes

Buy a run of the mill 27 speed with rapid fire shifters...especially if you plan on doing any climbing (which you should)

Do you trail run at all?

dude he wants a commuter, not some played-out MTB. lol mountain bikes are so 90's. get with the now.

ok are we talking about a conditioning tool or a commuter bike?

get to the now?...where do you live that you're so removed from a mountain bike? you sound like a city boy...

Well a commuter bike with obvious idea that it will help my conditioning by riding than driving to school. It will be all paved trails/sidewalks/and city streets.

lol i was just effing with you. personally, i really don't enjoy riding my MTB on the road though.

Word...gear combos just allow for power sprints etc...

I always liked biking to work...just showing up all sweaty, wet, muddy. I did it all winter one year in the snow with 2 minor vehicle accidents...it was always an adventure and good way to start/end the day...and lets not forget good for the environment haha

plus everyone thinks you're weird or hardcore for biking everywhere...like Andy from the 40 year old virgin...

I can think of 2 guys who bike everywhere, all the time, rain or shine...they are definitely a rare breed haha

here in the michigan whenever people see someone commuting on a bike who's over the age of 16 they always assume he got a DUI lol.

Yeah I dunno about the whole rain/snow thing. Maybe some clouds and sprinkles but I'll be driving if its pouring rain. This is just an idea b/c the weather is nice and it'd be a good staple for my conditioning

They are probably in badass shape though.

I got my bike at a department store, just ask if they are sellling off any of their demo models. For example, I got mine at a zellers (similar to wal-mart in Canada), it was on display, and I noticed that the leather seat had a little hole in it, and they gave it to me for like 60% off.

I got my bike at a department store
Terrible idea.
Likely assembled by someone who didn't know what they were doing, and of an inferior 'pedigree'

Back on topic: biking is an awesome training tool...
it's the reason my cardio remained decent over the summer, even though I hardly touched the gym or the mat.
AND it's fun? hell yeah.

anyone who has purchased a bicycle from a decent lbs has been fitted for a bike, andyone who takes their conditioning seriously and uses a bicycle as a large part of thier training program has been fitted. the possible injuries range from erectile dysfuntion caused by a poorly adjusted, poorly fitted seat, to carpal tunnel syndrom from improperly adjusted reach and handlebar ergonomics, to tendon and ligament damage in the knees (due mostly to poorly adjust "clipless" pedal and shoe combination that you wont have to worry about for jus riding to school.

I was overseas in Asia recently and nobody was fitted for their bikes. And many thousands of people rode them to get anywhere.

The possible side effects from Tylenol include death and liver damage. But listing those side effects without the rate of occurrence in a completely out of context manner doesn't provide very helpful information, does it?

Ppphh...insert photo of random asian guy on bike with his 4 children, 3 live chickens in coops, 2 weeks laundry and balancing 4 bowls on his head...

If you are using a bike as a conditioning tool...take 5 minutes and get fitted or just live with fucked knees for the rest of your life...

On the bike fitting part....make sure your hands don't set to far apart from each other. Not a problem on drop handles usually but on straight mountain bike handles you can get your hands out to far and it just get's uncomfortable.

If your still in the deciding phase check out Trek and Novarra(at REI). Trek usually comes in a little cheaper for similar bike quality as they do some serious sales volume.

If you want to buy made int the USA buy a Canondale.

Just keepp putting money back for a bike till you decide and you may be able to get more than you thought you could.
