The duck thing does not work here.
Jones did not duck Aspinall for a year. He was injured for a year and then had a pervious fight with Stipe that was booked before Aspinall was a contender for the interim.
Jones has finished his fight with Stipe that preceded(came before) Aspinall. Jones is now on the clock for ducking or not as Aspinall is now relevant and next in line.
This is not that hard to understand and basic reasoning.

Jones ducking of Tom *could* objectively be an attempt to get the UFC to pay more than the fight is worth. Merab ducking Umar is legitimately him worried he will lose
