Beware the Jabberwocky!

Saturday Oct. 10th

Hike: Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim
24 miles (12 hrs exactly)

7pm -Arrive at South Rim of the Grand Canyon, setup camp.
9pm - In tent ready to sleep
1:30am - I wish I had some Ambian and earplugs... Fall asleep.
3am - Wake up, break camp. It's cold.
4:20am - Start down Bright Angel Trail. The only light is from other groups headlamps far down the slope and a speck in the distance... the North Rim Lodge.
6:15am -Sun up. Able to take off head lamps. Changed into shorts. Downhill freakin' hurts. I'm already limping due to last weeks blisters and my left it-band has had enough downhill.
8:00 - At the Colorado River. B... E.. utiful
8:30 - Switched to light rei socks. Ahhh relief. Fuck Thorlos. Retaped several toes. Time for a long flat hot hike across the bottom.
12:30 - 45min break at Cottonwood Camp. I took my shoes off and stood in the freezing water and ate lunch. Ahhh. Now beginning the uphill climb.
3pm - I'm sure our seritonin levels we're at zombie like levels and we had the steepest portion of the trip left. 3.5 miles from the top I passed out caffeine pills to everyone in our party. We split up for the hardest 1.5 miles and seriously hustled until the next water station. I'm fried now.
3:30pm - I was out of breath and HR wouldn't recover (elevation 8000-9000), had to grind in out. The last 2 miles were ridiculously hard, but keep moving to meet my goal.
4:20pm - Arrive a North Rim Trail head. Twelve hours on the nose.

Goal time was 12hrs, there is no way Oprah could beat that. I didn't bring my DSLR, but I'll have some pics from the trip up in a few days. I was trying to ingest 250 calories/hour. I hit the target well, never bonked. I could've packed less, but I was better than most considering I only used my lumbar pack. Knowing myself, if I wore a back pack I would've filled it to the limit at the last moment.

I'm still hobbling around. Had to tape up 4 toes on the the way due to blisters. I have a few left to lance ; ) good times. I need an epsom salt bath

He's a view back across the canyon from the North Rim Lodge. The North Rim doesn't have half the tourists and the lodge and cabin are very cool. I almost feel asleep on one of the many leather couches in the lodge waiting for our dinner reservation. The waterboy, dumped a tray of water glasses on the table and my crotch. Mostly my crotch. He was mortified, I was giggling. I told him if it made him feel better I totally deserved it. Split prime rib with my wife and couldn't finish it still. None of us feel so good ; P I was almost nodding off at the dinner table.

Recovered by Sunday morning to due some damage to the breakfast buffet. Biscuits and gravy, mountains of bacon, french toast...... coma.

Wow, that is crazy. I would have next no interest in ever doing that, but power to ya :D

Why didn't Zero go with you? *giggles*

Zero > Liquid's dumb ass.

Zero: 2 hour nap + chocolate milk for a deload

Liquid: lives in harmony with rattlesnakes, enjoys bloody feet and drinks piss for fun.

Why did you/the party camp and hike at 4:20?

Is your av of a Bills fan? I saw guys with bags on their heads on the highlights for Sunday's game.

I hope you had a revelation on your spirit journey.
I spoke with Johnny Cash many times that day
Fuck. That. You are a man's man.
Thanks godsen.

We wanted to ensure we'd be finished before the sunset. It would've been sole-crushing (and cold) to climb out in the dark.

The av isn't a Bills fan, but I remember the Bills teams of the 1980's when we'd go 2-14, lots of fans wore bags to the games.

Ugh I went back and saw that snake.. holy shit

I hate snakes.

I hear ya on that. Tho I haven't seen any Rattlers here in Georgia.

The only good snake is a dead one

You really did make 315 look easy. It didn't seem like you had glute problems on that set

I don't know if I;m more impressed by the hike or the fact that you squatted the next day. Nice work.

Thanks, ObJ. After I'd finish, it'd hurt to sit up and put weight on the left leg. My ass came off the bench on 315. I handled 310 fine, but flubbed 315.

Thanks, 3dz. I didn't think I was going to be able to squat. I couldn't get up or down stairs on Sunday without hand rails and I'd be up of breath after one flight of stairs, but surprising my legs were strong. Now my hips and calves are tight as hell. I really need to start stretching more.

The hike was hard as I really didn't get to train for it. It's so hot in AZ during the summer months you rarely go outside. Hiking season just started so we were able to squeeze on two nice hikes before the Grand Canyon. I didn't really want to do it, but I racked up a lot of husbandly duty points.
