Best Lead Hand Hooks (GIFs)

He dropped Miocic with that same punch. He throws it that way to get more range, I like it a lot. It just looks like his arm is completely extended but it isnt.

It doesn't really get him more range, he could turn his knuckle over (like how Mir does in the first gif in the OP) and have a much better punch at the same distance. JDS just never worries about how his hand connects because he hits so hard it doesn't even matter. His slappy hook or overhand that connects with the thumb will still put your lights out.

I really like OSP's footwork here, how his left power hand switched quickly to his lead hand and the hook came from a surprise angle.

Nick Diaz has a good one for which he never receives much acclaim, and occasionally it's even an open handed strike (a la Pancrase).

Most of the time I see him mentioned, it's usually someone complaining about him.

People need to just accept how good the guy was. He wasn't the most entertaining fighter around, we all know that, but he was seriously amazing at what he did.

If more people understood the genius behind what he does, they would appreciate him more. Just the way he was able to pass his opponent's guard was insane. His opponents knew what he was going to do, but they still couldn't stop it. That alone is proof of how damn good the guy was.

There will never be a WW as dominant as him.

I agree.

That would be true if his fist is fully closed when it connects, but Ive always thought he has the first phalanges of his fingers partially extended, which would add easily over 1 inch reach to that punch with his handsize. But now when Im looking closely that Hunt-gif Im not sure anymore, his fist looks pretty closed there.

Here it looks like his fist is not fully closed. That punch would have hit with knuckles turned over also, though. Anyway, I like that punch a lot even if it looks so "poor technique". I would like to hear from him why he throws it that way, I really doubt he arent aware of that you are supposed to hit it with over turned knuckles.

He's still hitting with the center mass of his hand, how he always does. If he had his hand more open and clipped Hunt with that last inch of reach it'd be more likely to break his fingers and hurt his wrist than damage Hunt. If he really needed that extra inch, there are much better ways to get it. Like I said, JDS doesn't have good delivery with any of his punches really. He just gets so much power behind them that it doesn't make a difference to him.

Edit in response to your edit:

You can see what I'm talking about clearly here. The fist is relaxed just because he's lazy with it, which is why his wrist flops back when it lands. If he turned it over properly, he'd land with the knuckles and his wrist would be much more stable. A properly delivered punch in that exact moment could have made that a knockout instead of a knockdown.

Yup, youre right. I didnt even payed attention to that floppy wrist when it connects. I still wind it strange if he isnt deliberately throwing it that way. I mean, I would assume its very basic boxing knowledge and easy to throw it like you say, he has to know that as a fighter who loves boxing.

Gomi always had a good one

It's pretty rare for fighters to turn over long hooks. The Cubans and Eastern Europeans do it, but it's more complicated than it looks. To punch like that without breaking your thumb or hurting your wrist, you have to arc it down at the end. It's like turning the steering wheel of a car. To do that without blowing out your shoulder, you have to sit down properly at the end of the punch.

Some people don't even know what a lead hook is.

A lead hook can have 2 definitions.

1. Leading with a punch.
2. Using the lead (jab) hand to hit someone.

Don't act all high and mighty when everyone is right in a way.

A lead hook is when you lead with a hook, if you throw a jab first then how the hell is it a lead hook, dumb-ass. I wasn't even talking about that, I've seen people here posting right crosses followed by left hooks, two hit combos followed be the hook, I expect it from sherdog tho.

Did you not see what I just fucking said!?

A lead hook can mean any hook landed with the hand you're leading with. If you're fighting orthadox the hand you lead with is your left, so any left hook is a lead hook because you are using your lead hand.

It can also mean a hook that you lead (start a combination) with. You are seriously arguing something that you don't have a clue about.

The last angle of this gif hurts my elbow just watching it. Takes all the force and hyperextends it

Lead HAND hook

Trying to act smart over the semantics of a phrase that you read wrong...I expect it from sherdog though
