Turning the hand over would shorter the reach of the punch. He deliberately throws it that way to get a 1-2 inch more reach. Its an unorthodox punch, but he is having a real success with it.

No it absolutely does not. Turning your hand to hit with the side of the first where the knuckle is, doesn't shorten the punch what so ever, and it would hurt a lot more.

He's managed to rock Hunt and Miocic with the same punch, so I'd say he's doing well with it.

Well, that doesn't change it from being an awful punch, JDS just have that much power.

If he just turned the knuckle over so it at least hits like Nelsons straight arm hooks usually hit, would make it a lot more danging.

Lot of people confusing lead hooks with counter hooks and regular hooks itt.

EDIT: Correction. Basically everyone in this thread is confusing lead hooks with counter hooks and regular hooks.

The thread says lead hand hook, as in a hook with the lead hand. Different people use different terminology anyway.
