Given the fact that each has its advantages and disadvantages, if you had to chose 1 as a base to build a champion fighter which would you choose and why?

I'm curious how people compare Sambo and Catch Wrestling to BJJ from an effectiveness standpoint. Josh Barnett seems to have trained at least some form of catch wrestling under Erik Paulson and it looks like a highly effective grappling style. Also with the success of Fedor and Khabib it makes me wonder whether Sambo is a superior grappling base.

What are your thoughts on how they compare and why you would choose one over the other?

Sambo, specifically Combat Sambo for mixing in striking. In MMA striking is a part of grappling.

Catch is good for this rules.. time limit and short rounds

American folk style wrestling is the best base—period.

Even though lay and pray sucks shit, it wins fights.

Folk style is the best way to control where the fight goes. Its the best way to be a competitive fighter while you’re still developing your other skills.

Since this is mma, ill say all of them

Edit: crap i have to choose 1, sambo because Fedor and Fedor is the best

Catch. It is better suited for the rules of mma. Judo bjj and sambo can work but must be adapted. Why not train in something that is specifically suited for mma?

That was part of what I was wondering. It seems like catch wrestling and combat sambo transition very well into mma. They seem like strong bases for mma fighters.

It's a decent base to work with for most people but some can't adjust well to not having a gi. Plus catch doesn't have many rules in submission sambo and the like have a bunch

Combat Sambo is like MMA lite. And they hespect the judo so that's always been my vote.

Imo judo that stresses randori and newaza and also has no-gi days is a really solid frickin' base but that wasn't part of the OP.

Do you have a list of mma fighters with a catch wrestling base? When I have seen clips of the training techniques and the techniques by Erik Paulson it seems like a really interesting style. It comes across as a violent and aggressive grappling style.

As for combat sambo, Fedor and Khabib have been dominant it goes to show the effectiveness of the style. I wonder how many of the techniques can be transitioned over once the gi is eliminated.

Agree

Hard to tell the difference between combat salvo and mma save for the go and headgear

.that why fedor was so succesful

Catch wrestling has become a umbrella term. But submission wrestling under let's say a Neil melanson is a better base than folk for mma, because you will be putting in years of grappling in positions that will be actually seen in mma.

The control in folk is completely different than mma, no gi or submission grapplers will have a headstart on the 3/4 of the grappling used in mma.

They all can be very effective if the fighter is Legit... Sambo - Fedor and Khabib ... BJJ - Ortega has looked next level... Wrestling - Most American Fighters with experience can control the fight.

Can you elaborate or post some clips?

I haven't seen as many succesful mma fighters that come from a judo background so that is why I didn't include it. Although I remember Karo Parisyan was very effective. Can you educate me on randori and newaza? I am not familiar so I am not quite sure what you are referring to. Thanks
