Best Discipline For Self Defense?

This has been discussed to death in another thread. It's a pity the search function sucks so very much. Try looking ahead a few pages. I know it's tedious but you'll be doing yourself a favour.

From what I remember, the consensus was Krav Maga and boxing.

agree

Boxing.

Being able to move forward/backward/side to side while affectively landing accurate punches would win you most street fights.

Also, as previous posters have stated, Krav Maga is for the most part a huge bullshido joke.

It's not the discipline that decides the outcome, it's the fighter. It sounds cliche, however it is very true.

Although just going by the discipline, I much rather fight a Boxer than I had someone who has done something along the lines of Aikido, or BJJ.

1v1 sure BJJ might be better than boxing, but the fact is most street fights arent fair and if u take it to the ground and stay there people are gonna boot you while your down, wich is why imo boxing is the best.

True. but the reason that I said BJJ is because if you're capable of switching it up, and not just automatically going to the ground... It's a nice compliment to have in your arsenal. a lot moreso in my opinion than boxing.

I think you should start with the striking arts for street fights then throw in grappling if you feel its neccessary. People can learn BJJ all day but once you feel what its like to get hit a lot will fold.

And Aikido is almost completely useless in a streetfight, ask Greg Jackson.

Part of me wants to say boxing or muay thai. But if you're taken to the ground, theres a disadvantage.

Best bet would be judo if you train at a competing gym. You learn takedowns, holds, how to control your opponent, etc. If you're at a gym that trains for competition and also has traditional classes, you'll learn rudimentary striking and weapons defense as well.

How about Discretion? Don't put yourself in danger to have to worry about it.

The winner.

My old BJJ coach once said (with regards to self defense) "If you're somewhere and there's assholes around just leave". Wise words IMO.
