Best Discipline For Self Defense?

Kenpo by far is the best self defense for prison. Go to a good Kenpo school, most have "real" sparring. Even six months will make a big difference.

kyokushin. It'll toughen you up. It also is practiced bare knuckle, no pads, or headgear.

If you can, try San shou (it teaches you to be a dirty basterd)...

p.s. shit one on the whole prison deal.

i think the best self defense for prison, is to stay out of prison

care to elaborate on this one? Having trained Sanda, not sure about the dirty part...though definitely not complaining!

TS, are you going to prison?
If so try and stay outta trouble (if possible)
and get through it unscathed.
Best of luck.

Also curious about this statement.. Sanda?? Dirty?

If by dirty you mean throwing 1,2 snappy kick followed by a double leg..Then yeah its pretty dirty..

Haganah for sure. Israeli fighting techniques, it's a mixture of BJJ, Sambo, Wrestiling, Muay Thai, Krav Maga and some others. It has knife and gun disarms. So i would say Haganah is the best for self defense in any situation. I also take the classes Link: Fight 2 Survive

Muay Thai.

TBH, I think the sport based martial arts (most of them at least) are also the best martial arts for self-defense.

Sport martial arts are so well refined, you learn simple but brutal techniques and train them over and over again. Then you test these techniques against resisting opponents by sparring. You try to beat them, they try to beat you. You also can gain a lot of experience fighting in tournaments, at an amateur level, etc.

Muay Thai is a sport based martial art, but I don't think that anyone will tell you that it isn't dangerous or brutal.

I'd disagree that sport based martial arts are the best for self defence. You train repitition within sport based martial arts within the confines of rules. There are no rules in a streetfight or when trying to evade a beat down or someone trying to kill you even. You go to what you know when you panic. I think MT is great for self defence, it is dangerous and brutal, you are right. Sparring is great and gets you used to close combat so that you don't freak out in real life. We have a MT guy who just joined our jujitsu school and he freaks out when you get him on his back. At the same time a jujitsu guy that always goes for a takedown on the street will get boot f----d by multiple attackers.

Any training is better then no training against the average joe. If I had to pick one art for self defence, it would be Kajukenbo. Contact sparring often with no gear and no rules. You can elbow a guy to the back of the skull when he goes to take you down, they target the groin, the eyes, etc. It's more complete than Krav Maga and MT for self defence. It's really a street fighting style.

Is anyone familiar with Maphilindo Silat? Just curious, thanks.

When the lights go out, the fishing begins. The cons start whispering, “Fresh fish! Fresh fish today! We’re reeling ‘em in!” or “Here fishy, fishy, fishy…” They taunt relentlessly, but they rarely exceed the level of whispering; the point, after all, is to break down the newcomers slowly, methodically, not to attract attention to themselves. The newcomers in turn, close their eyes and remember the advice they received on an internet MMA forum...

Pure Gold.

Kali. It prepares you for armed and unarmed combat. Either that, or get yourself a gun.

You guys recommending Krav Maga... have you ever walked into a Krav gym and seen how bullshido that stuff actually is? Dont believe the marketing or the hype.

The best for self defense is well refined sport based MA's like Muay Thai and Boxing because of their polished techniques and brutality. You will learn how to strike overwhelmingly hard and fast for any untrained person. Your body will also be conditioned to take pain and damage.

If you want to defend against knives know that people wont come at you in fixed positions like Krav teaches. They'll probably conceal it and stab you when you least expect. Maybe filipino knive systems are more effective but I cant comment because I have no experience with them.

Your mentality is also important, be ready to seriously hurt the other person. Like poster above said, "Bullies fight to win, men fight to kill."

Finally, avoid street fights. Ive only witnessed several street fights in my life and every time except once the loser was so damaged I wondered if he couldve died later. Its better not to fight in the first place.

This is the truth.

Did you forget that time is important here? If he is going to jail he probably doesn't have years to get ready.

I think you'd have trouble finding someone who has done it for 6-12months+ that would call it "bullshido". No doubt there are crap schools (as with any art) but it is not in McDojoLand just yet...

The OP needs something simple, quick, brutal & effective that will give ways to deal with multiple attackers, weapons and extracting from bad situations, KM is all those things & more.

QFT.

First of all what is this hypothetical person going to jail for? If you touched the kiddies nothing will save you.

Assuming any art you learn would have the same level of instruction, I don't see how you could go wrong with Krav. You learn some weapon defense, how to punch and kick (it's amazing how many people don't even know how to throw a decent punch so just getting that down put's you ahead of the game), how to deal with multiple attackers, and more. Krav is about ending the fight as quickly and violently as possible and gettin'tfo.

Sprinkle in some basic boxing classes to refine your striking and some knife defense classes and you might save your ass longer than most.

MT would be nice if you had a few years to prepare (or at least more than a few months).

There is no special one size fits all answer though.
