Best base for MMA imo(boxing)

Lol I could see Floyd shoulder rolling a kick (or trying too)

I wrestled for 3 years, then made the transition to boxing. I have to say I think it was easier to go from wrestling to boxing then it would have been vice versa.

That's cool. I went from BJJ/MMA to boxing. I don't even train MMA anymore. I'm a fist-fighter. :icon_chee

We're not talking about elite boxers numbnuts we're talking about boxing as a base of foundation. Doesn't matter what level boxer it is, there were boxers in that event and they did get their asses handed to them

BJJ wouldn't have been effective in early UFC's if they had a low level white belt, so i don't see your point

i know what the phily shell is.. its a defence to keep a boxer from getting knocked out.allowing the opponents punches to glance off the arms rather than the face and abdomen.

You wiki'd that. It's cool, man, it's cool. I didn't know boxing terms until I started boxing.

just because my screen name has wrestler in it doesnt mean i think its the end all for mma just my back round and i dont have to wiki a basic boxing defense...

My point is anyway you cut it, you take a pure boxer vs a pure BJJ guy, BJJ will win 90% of the time, hence it is a better base than boxing.

Philly shell is actually not basic at all... Just saying...

How many boxing fights?

0. I was to make my debut in the Golden Gloves here in Austin, TX in Feb, but I recently got jumped and had my ribs broken. Things were looking good until I reinjured them about 2 weeks ago. This means I gotta take another month off, and that isn't enough time to train for the kinds of guys that fight in the Golden Gloves.

Anyhow, I'm probably going to fight in a few smokers here and there, all building up to the San Marcos Fite Nite in April. It's the biggest ammy event here in Texas. I get to do a promotional weigh-in the night before, too, where I stand with my opponent and everything. :icon_lol:

Yeah, it's not that basic. Most coaches don't even encourage it, cause you get hit clean if you don't roll correctly. I can pull it off, but my coach flipsashit when he see's me blocking with my elbow and whatnot.

You most've not read my post. IF we're going to pick one fighting style to beat other styles(like the early days) then only sub arts would be good. Wrestling is worth less without either stiking or sub def. name one decent boxer that was in the early UFC's? I'd take a prime Mike Tyson over prime Royce any day. my post is about the best syles as a base and then develope other styles around that base and i think it's easily boxing

I'd take a heavyweight over a welterweight any day aswell

You're correct there. I fought at Golden gloves last year on 4 days notice, and I felt like shit. Came out of it in 3rd place, but thats not what I was hoping for.

Thats awesome! I wish I had a chance to fight at a show like that. What weight do you fight at?

I fight at 145. I'm 6'3 though, so I have an advantage. I have sparring videos in my training log, if you want to see, but it's mostly light sparring.

Yeah, I'm psyched about the weigh-in thing. I just hope my opponent isn't some frat-boy (90% of the fighters in it are from a fraternity at that "boxes" at TX State) that tries to make it all personal, because I'd hate to maul him in front of his home crowd.

Then again...I'm going to maul him anyways. Fuck it.

EDIT: 4 days? Damn man! You have guts!!

6'3 at 145 holy fuck. how much do you have to cut??

wrestling is the best imo..

you can determine where the fight takes place. It is arguably the hardest style to learn. And wrestlers are very popular for having great work ethic. It also allows the learning of bjj to become more smooth as well.

No way, that makes it even better! I have pictures from Golden Gloves (which was in my opponents city) where I knocked him down, some of the faces in the audience are pretty funny. I ended up losing that fight though cause I gassed, but a bronze on 3 days notice isn't too bad.

P.S. You are tall as hell for 145! And I definitely will check out your videos, let me know if you want to see some of my pictures from the only fight I brought a camera to.

ANyone that knows any thing about Grappling knows that a pure BJJ agaist a pure wrestler at equal weight the BJJ guy will win just about every time. When i was training BJJ or 6 months i was tapping out college wrestlers that where new to BJJ. most people on here claim that wrestling is the best base. So going on whcih style is more effective with only that style is not a good indicator of the best base.

Although Muay Thai is awesome, boxing emphasizes more on punching (obviously). And people tend to punch more than kick. A mix of the two is perfect a la Anderson Silva.

But you all knew that already.

As a MMA fan and fellow martial artist I like to do Muay Thai, Boxing and BJJ, with BJJ being my 'base'.
