I first saw Benson when I was competing at a grapplers quest in the early 00’s in Vegas. He had a match against Gilbert Melendez (I think Benson was a purple belt at the time but this was expert nogi). Jake Shields was also there coaching Gil so I watched the match assuming Gil would smash this random swaggy dude with long hair. Match starts Gil shoots and Benson taps him with a guillotine in what must have been 15 seconds. Shortly after he started competing in WEC and needless to say I tuned into every fight of his and was always a huge fan of his calm cool demeanor and exceptional skills. Benson is truly one of the greatest LW fighters of all time in my book he is an exemplary example of what a mixed martial artist should be.
WAR BENDO! Wishing him continued happiness and success in life post fighting.

I started following this sport around the time the UFC bought WEC. All the WEC guys have a special place in my heart. Thanks for everything Bendo, I wish you the best in your next endeavour.

Bendo was cool. I often took the "other side" in his big fights due to the opposition being more to my liking, but he always was a top-tier guy both as a fighter and a dude. Hopefully he is financially well off enough to stay retired and not having to return later on to mess up his health.

And this is one of the iconic UFC moments that should live forever
