News Benson Henderson retired

Watch WEC 43, WEC 46, WEC 53, UFC on Fox 1 vs Guida, him verses Jim Miller, him against Nate Diaz and Melendez at UFC on Fox 5 and 7, and UFC Fight Night 60 against Thatch if you need a crash course on Benson Henderson. That guy was great once upon a time.

I'll just be honest, the WEC/SF/late 2000s/early 2010s is my favorite era of MMA. I was the only person I knew who watched WEC cards on Versus mid-week and got my brother and his best friend into MMA around then, who I still split PPVs with to this day. I recall him getting Varner in that standing guillotine. Him escaping all those crazy Cerrone subs (don't get me started on WEC, I could write a damn book about it).

I vividly remember us being gotten to when Pettis effortlessly subbed Benson in a round and he told Rogan that the sub fucking hurts and that's why he tapped. I just feel obligated to give those guys shout outs. WAR Benson. Bendo bless.
I feel you man. That Benson-Cerrone-Varner love triangle was awesome to watch as it happened, WEC put on great shows with a small roster. Stann winning the belt from the skinhead dude, Faber running into Brown, Cruz and Benavidez ushering in a new era of speed.

DC told a really interesting story about how Benson Henderson’s body feels weirdly dense, something you feel even just shaking his hand. Massage therapists would literally stand on his back because of his crazy muscle and tissue density. The guy is clearly a very special athletic talent, and he’s had an amazing career, not many people can remain competitive as long as he did. Enjoy retirement champ!

Very well rounded fighter and always seemed like a nice guy. He was at his best in WEC in my opinion, some great fights there.

I’m glad he’s gone, there was just something about him that always rubbed me the wrong way.

Great career, been a fan since WEC and used to use him as my avatar in a couple of places I'd been in my pre-dog days.

That WEC title fight with Pettis will forever be one of the greatest.

Feels like a LONG time ago.

Post so nice you all should read it twice!

I first saw Benson when I was competing at a grapplers quest in the early 00’s in Vegas. He had a match against Gilbert Melendez (I think Benson was a purple belt at the time but this was expert nogi). Jake Shields was also there coaching Gil so I watched the match assuming Gil would smash this random swaggy dude with long hair. Match starts Gil shoots and Benson taps him with a guillotine in what must have been 15 seconds. Shortly after he started competing in WEC and needless to say I tuned into every fight of his and was always a huge fan of his calm cool demeanor and exceptional skills. Benson is truly one of the greatest LW fighters of all time in my book he is an exemplary example of what a mixed martial artist should be.
WAR BENDO! Wishing him continued happiness and success in life post fighting.

had kinda lost track of him over there. didn't realize he was 7-7 in bellator. sounds like it was time to hang them up.

He's one of those guys that should be talked about more when it comes to the athletic freak discussion. Definitely had wear and tear in Bellator but his overall career was fun to watch, his WEC run had some fun ones.

He's probably going to be remembered more for the guy that Pettis Cage kicked which is a shame because he had a good run.

Hell of a career. One of, if not THE pioneer of calf kicks at the top level in modern MMA.
