Ben Askren Predicts Maycee Barber Will Be Champion by 2021

"I coach her," said Ben Askren. "You know, maybe show her how to do a technique. She’s awesome, fantastic; she’s going to blast Roxy [Modafferi]. I think she’s going to get a title shot by the end of the year.”

When asked if Barber will have fought for the title by this time next year, Askren would go on to say he believes she’ll be champion by 2021 and doesn’t believe it’s much of a bold prediction.

“She’ll probably fight Roxy; then maybe Jessica Eye, someone in that range; then probably for the title.”

Askren was asked how he thinks a fight with Barber and champion Valentina Shevchenko would go down and he said with more time, he could see Barber earning a victory.

“It’ll be tough but November might be a different story. She’s only 21; she’s getting a lot better really fast.”

Since earning a contract with the UFC on Dana White’s Contender Series, Barber has been public that her lifelong goal has been to beat the record set by light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and become the youngest UFC champion in the history of the promotion.

She fights at 125 ?

She is a big girl for sure Im guessing she has to be at least 160' in this photo with Askren

Maycee is tough but stop discrediting V, Valentina is a counter fighter and would merk Maycee if she tried to land a telegraphed big punch.

Valentina is one of the most defensive and technical strikers she went with big ass power puncher and probably the hardest hitting female Amanda Nunes and never got put to sleep in fact many people felt she was robbed in the first fight. And Valetina barely weighs 135 pounds, where Maycee is walking around in the 160s.
 
Barber? Improving? Lol. She's arguably gone backwards since her Contender Series fight. She'll struggle with the contenders in the division and either Shevchenko sister will beat her without breaking a sweat.
 
Not beating Val....no one is for a long time.

Aspen and Maycee are probably the biggest weight cutters among the women fighters.
 
She’s a good prospect, and I think she’s got a lot of potential if she’s not pushed to fast.

...I then remind myself that Valentina is champion, and Maycee will not touch gold as long as she’s got the belt.
 
She will improve a lot I think but also needs to in order to beat valentina.

I say she certainly has a decent chance to do it by 2021s end.

I think its the weight cut, she used to be very sharp and light on her toes and crisp but this girl is putting on weight in between fights, making her a bit more sloppy. This why Valentina is so sharp and crisp she doesn't put on weight in-between fights and stays lean so her reflexes and timing do not suffer.
Maycee is a very powerful girl, she has good striking and wrestling, and heavy ground and pound. But she will need more experience to take on Valentina who is a sharp shooter counter striker with explosive speed and defense.
 
It'll be interesting to see how White wants to play this. Slow play or risk her future marketability with a quick titleshot she might not be ready for.

Maycee is a major talent to be sure. And she is still in that "sponge" phase where she is learning so much and improving by leaps and bounds. She will certainly be a title challenger at some point. Could she beat Shevchenko now? Most likely not. But, in two years, who knows? Nunes went from being dominated by Sarah D'Alelio to UFC champ in three years. Just sayin'....

No. She doesn't have the technical ability to catch Valentina. Her best chance is to walk Val down and throw a big punch. She doesn't even have the speed to do so.
