Ben Askren’s prognosis

Median survival following a lung transplant is four to six years, but it's possible to live much longer. Your individual prognosis depends on many factors, such as your age, where you get the surgery, and follow-up care. Because lungs are so fragile, life expectancy is shorter than with other solid organ transplants.

I get every vaccine they offer. My MIL is fighting shingles, my brother pneumonia, my mother gets the flu every year. Me? I get hangovers.

I’m 60 years old, smoked like a chimney, drank ALOT of beer and only gym I ever saw was a Slim Jim. Aside from a broken hip a couple years back from a fall, I’ve done OK.

Party On Gen X !!
yea, me being Mr. anti vaccine refused to get the shingles vax and I enjoyed that party a few months back. It was like having herpes all over the left side of my body! I am getting all the recommended vax soon. like you.

I feel so bad for Askren and his family. His lungs must have been completely crushed. I'm assuming he was on ECMO to keep him alive until he got the double lung transplant.

Hmm why is that even. If the transplant goes well. Does the body fight the lungs ? Do they simply get damaged and give up to fast ? Man life is crazy. Thank God I believe in God. So whatever bullshit happens to us and people around us and in the world, I at least believe in God.

Fingers crossed for insane breakthroughs in medicine due to AI in the next decade :) WAR BEN :)

No idea. Can any of us feel our lungs? I wonder if the low life expectancy is because the body eventually rejects the lungs as a foreign object?

It is exactly that.

It is not his tissue, his body basically will spend the rest of his life attacking his own lung tissue as though it is a foreign body or a parasite.

This will leave his entire immune system compromised and what is most likely to take him out is something like pneumonia or influenza (.. or any sort of infection) because his body will have its own resources spread too thin attempting to kill his lung tissue, .

They will put him on heavy immunosupressants but that will not only affect the part of his immune system attacking him, but also limit its ability to do its job attacking actual threats like foreign bacteria or viruses.
