Ben Askren’s prognosis

I know, that’s why I said I hope him being young and athletic extends that. But it’s still depressing man, even if he gets 15 extra years that means he’ll pass at 55. That’s around the time when you start sitting back and truly enjoy life, with money, your children’s weddings and first grand kids, playing golf, going on vacation, etc.
this is why the whole do nothing but work and save until retirement life plan is silly. Life is so insanely short and unpredictable. you are just gambling that in the end your health is going to be okay enough to actually enjoy those things you like. what typically happens is people end up doing none of the things they planned to do their whole life their focus, their drive their physical health changes to much. their funds go to medical bills and phone / email scammers, their health is bad and they just devolve into couch potatos who are angry and fixate to much on what others are doing instead of enjoying the short time they have. Doing things by the books your entire life and trying to make the "wise" decision often works against people in the end. You have to enjoy life now. Don't wait until later and definitely dont let religion set you on a path of giving away all your time because you think when you pass you'll have all the time you need in heaven. time is running out right now. If you want to be doing more never read this form again or post here. go live your life start there. its always on the edge of being almost over until its over.
as this situation shows there is no way to prepare either. You can spend decades eating clean and working out and just boom out of no where its over. live today like there is no tomorrow and keep the ones you love close. Time isnt something to waste.

Clean your gyms folks... ffs be more careful

How do you get from staph to this...

Unless Ben is one of those people that doesnt like doctors... "ah its nothing... ill be better in a few days"
staph is insanely scary among other things that transmit in these spaces. Ive been to gyms that literally mop that mats down with a decent concentration of bleach after every single class and they still had repeated staph outbreaks and crazy blood infections and then ive been to gyms in brazil where it couldnt be dirtier its even open to the outside with wind blowing dirt onto the mats same amount of staph issues as the ocd level clean gym no more no less overall .
you cant really inspect someones entire body before every class and even if students were responsible in doing that its easy to miss a little bump or pimple and have no idea you have staph on you.
i also knew a lot of guys who would work all day or hit the gym before and go roll with no shower before hand their job was clean but they were around and touching other people the entire day. it definitely increases the chances of issues.
its rare everyone showers after too until they get home and some are traveling 15min - an hour every time.

common issues people get when it comes to combat sports/ grappling people should understand especially at the hobbyist level you can do everything you want to prevent this but you roll the dice every time. its like having a bunch of unprotected sex with people you think are clean. you are taking a big risk. grappling isnt that much different unfortunately

1. Bacterial Skin Infections:
  • Staphylococcus and Streptococcus infections:These are the most common bacterial skin infections and include conditions like impetigo, cellulitis, and folliculitis.
    • Impetigo: A superficial skin infection causing blisters, open lesions, or honey-colored crusting.
    • Cellulitis: Affects deeper skin layers, causing redness, swelling, and pain.
    • Folliculitis: Infection of hair follicles, appearing as red pustules.
  • MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus): A more serious type of Staph infection resistant to certain antibiotics, which can cause painful boils or abscesses.
2. Viral Infections:
  • Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1), also known as herpes gladiatorum or mat herpes: Causes painful blisters, often on the face, neck, and torso. This is a highly contagious infection spread through skin-to-skin contact.
  • Molluscum contagiosum: A poxvirus infection causing dome-shaped bumps with a dimple in the center.
  • Verrucae (Warts): Caused by the human papillomavirus, resulting in scaly nodules.
3. Fungal Infections (Tinea):
  • Ringworm (Tinea corporis): A common fungal infection presenting as a red, scaly, circular rash with a clear center. Different types affect different parts of the body, such as tinea capitis (scalp), tinea pedis (athlete's foot), and tinea cruris (jock itch).
Other conditions:
  • Scabies: A skin infestation caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin.

one that goes heavily overlooked is mat herpes. its way more common than people realize. Doing sex work and fighting are not that different.

As you waste your time typing a gigantic paragraph that basically equates to yolo

If Ben lived like there was no tomorrow he would be in a much, much worse situation dummy

I believe transplant recipients have to take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of their lives.

I think anyways, i could be wrong.
Yeah they do, and a myriad of problems come with those drugs… main one being you basically have no immune system, at least that’s my understanding of them

Chronic Lung Allograft Dysfunction (CLAD) is a severe lung disease that occurs after lung transplantation, characterized by a persistent decline in lung function due to chronic rejection. It's a major complication following lung transplantation, significantly impacting patient survival and quality of life.

He can probably can get another transplant after this one gets chewed up by the body. Might have an organ rejection fix by then.

Every day is a gift, thats why it is called the present

Thoughts and prayers still go out to Ben and his family

I almost lost my wife around 4yrs ago when I was at work and she fell into a diabetic coma(DKA) at home from being an undiagnosed type-1 diabetic. She became diabetic out of nowhere and had been running around living life “freely” w/o a working pancreas, until her body dropped out

She was in DKA for over 8hrs before my mother finally found her because I asked her to go by the house and check due to not hearing anything all day from her and me being busy at work. Almost a week in ICU and almost going to a ventilator as her organs were systematically going to shut down one by one until death

I feel horrible to this day, I do safety checks constantly as to never leave her vulnerable again. I wake my son up at 5am when I leave to work everyday to let him know I love him too

ben did live like there was no tomorrow. he was a professional mma fighter and world champion he has lived more life than a majority, hes close with his family and successful outside of fighting as well this man took no real breaks from life he simply went after it. ben has lived an amazing life where as most people 9-5 and save their whole life and then random shit happens to throw that all in the trash. Often times in insanely unfair and sad the things i have seen people who worked so hard for decades and decades go through. everything they have have worked for goes to bullshit.

im not saying live reckless im saying make the days count. Don't put things off. Don't live life like it'll always be the same. don't take things for granted . yes in sort thats yolo. But people don't always grasp what YOLO really means. or they take it to literally without understandign the entire picture.

I dont feel like im wasting time with whatever i do in my down time because i accomplish the things i want to each day and i go after it. I'm not saying interacting with a community is a waste of time but if you feel like you aren't utilizing your time well in general anything that doesnt bring you closer to that is a waste of time.

I knew this immediately. Googled it. Never wanted to say it. It's quiet depressing. Can he feel his lungs, when they are not his ?
Not a doctor, but my understanding is they sever the nerves during the operation so you no longer get the urge to cough, among other things, and need to actively do it. No idea how, not a good place to be.

I was curious what the prognosis was for double lung transplant, this shit is mad depressing. There’s a very good chance Ben doesn’t make it to see his kids graduate high school. Horrible. Hopefully him being an athlete and relatively young extends his life expectancy significantly. View attachment 1102498
My auntie had lupus and had to have a double lung transplant. I lived with her while she recovered for surgery over 6 months. She has to take pills everyday but day to day life dramatically improved after the surgery. If you didn’t know her you wouldn't even know she has surgery.

There is hope

I’m generally amazed at fast Ben got those lungs. My auntie was on the waiting list for years. Askren is lucky man

I do wonder if the Indian wrestlers would wrestle in dirt and put dirt on each other to prevent these infections. The logic being that because dirt has so much of different bacteria and viruses that no single one can establish itself and infect you, they are all fighting for the same space and none can win.

That's an interesting thought. I guess it depends if we have nerves in our lungs to begin with.

Has anyone else considered getting the vaccine that supposedly can prevent this? I know i have.
And I am or was very anti vaccine after being forced to get that Moderna shot.
Pneumococcal (PCV, PPSV23) Yes! All adults age 50 and older need pneumococcal vaccination. Adults younger than 50 with certain underlying health conditions or other risk factors* also need pneumococcal vaccination. Newer vaccines may be recommended now for people vaccinated in the past. Your healthcare provider can determine what vaccine, if any, you need

i made the point in an earlier post on this thread that ive been to super clean gyms and also gyms with dirt on the mats open to the out doors and lots of moisture and people either dont wash their gis or they just rinse them in the ocean sometimes. there wasnt much difference in rates of staph infections and things like that. I'm not sure what causes it. the environment though - often athletes are over training in these spaces so their immune system a lot of the time may be compromised. weight cutting also causes this issue. hobby training- their day doesnt center around the sport and they are more crunched for time. Many leave the gym unshowered. sometimes a few hours will pass before a shower can happen when travel and some times eating are done before showering. sweat exchange on skin to skin contact and it absorbing into the clothing worn and micro cuts and things like that are often easily over looked or not even noticed as part of the problem
grappling sports in highschools- to many storys ive heard of kids dying from mersa. they are kids. How clean can you really get these places and how strong can their immune systems really be? sometimes i feel like the olympics trying to cut wrestling was a good thing. its a beautiful sport but we dont have effective methods to prevent these issues or even cure some of these issues in a proper way or at all. You dont just get staph and go to the doctor and take a pill. you deal with sometimes months of issues from the antibiotics and the wound trying to heal and all of that. its not just a cut on the arm that wont heal it effects your entire system your energy and all that too.

grappling is just crazy high risk not only for spreading viruses and bacteria but on the physical body and our medical system does not have effective methods at solving very serious infections with out it taking a major toll on the body or chronic pain issues caused by injuries to the spine. Its an extreme sport with higher risk than most participating realize.

look at the very top of the sport in jiujitsu. gordan ryan had staph ravage his system for years. people thought hes just making excuses, steroid abuse this and that. hes lucky he was still able to compete again period.

Askren is a fan/friend of RFK Jr who does not believe infections are a real thing.

Who knows what kind of weird decision he could have taken regarding his health.

Man, that shit is scary.
Staph and other drug resistant bacteria are not just a threat to wrestlers and grapplers, it's legit a looming threat for humanity.

I get every vaccine they offer. My MIL is fighting shingles, my brother pneumonia, my mother gets the flu every year. Me? I get hangovers.

I’m 60 years old, smoked like a chimney, drank ALOT of beer and only gym I ever saw was a Slim Jim. Aside from a broken hip a couple years back from a fall, I’ve done OK.

Party On Gen X !!
