Before Jon Jones, what was the worst example of a heavyweight champion avoiding a top contender?

no... there is no other HW example of this. Jon Jones is exclusive to this scummy behavior

Strikeforce probably had a better HW division at the time so just stop if u were gonna say fedor... nor was he ever the Strikeforce champ
The previous champ literally left to go fight Renan Ferreira.

But do go on.

Frankie was Eddie with less power

No not really. They're only similar in that they were wrestler boxers.

Frankie had a better chin, used a lot more lateral foot work, was faster and had better fundamental boxing, and was better at mixing strikes & transition into wrestling

Tim Sylvia was non-charismatic but he never ducked anyone. I can’t think of any HW that ducked another HW. That’s where I give Frank Mir a lot of credit. That dude fought everyone they had to offer.

hes avoiding no one. you absolute idiots. tom suck nutters. butt sucking turd burgs know nothing.

jon said he wanted to vacate and get a fight vs someone with a lot of accolades rather then fight the next up and coming guy. dana goes im making the fight- jon then says in multiple interviews and to the ufc he will vacate no problem he prefers a legacy fight for his final fight the only way he would take it is if they paid him like 30 mil. reasonable. its his last fight hes the goat. dana hears this and goes- we are making the fight and the duck narrative starts - dana never made the fight or offered whaty jon was asking or even listened to what jon said . so jon never vacated trolled the fans trolled tom trolled dana and wins again. undisputed goat. get the hell out of here you stupid turd burger absolute idiots.

Does anyone have any doubts at all that this guy jerks off thinking about Jon Jones every night?

Not trying to judge. Everyone has their thing. But man, this dude doesn't even try to hide his unconditional love of Jones.

Yeah Conor should’ve fought the guy who beat Aldo.

Oh wait he’d already beaten Holloway too.

Quit acting like there weren’t plenty of good reasons why Conor never went back to 145.
There was only one, he was going to die one day making 145lbs, when he was champion fought no one, thats not subject to opinions.

It doesn't happen, Jon just blazing new trails left and right. First gay UFC HW champ as well.

This crap didn't really happen in the past because they were all paid peanuts compared today. Additionally since McMidget showed up fighters feel like they have more control, not sure that is a completely bad thing though.

If I was Jon I wouldn't fight Tom for less than 3mil. He beats him people will say Tom wasn't that good and Jon should have fought Francis. If Tom wins people will say Jon is nothing and not the GOAT. What's in it for him?
Thats fair, but he's reportedly been offered 12 million and turned it down. If that doesn't do it, I don't think the number is the issue.

its so funny how fans of this sport will literally suck dana whites nuts over a fighters. hes a promoter trying to force jon to promote his next big guy at low pay. thats danas job and all you suck butts are like yeah dana is right! lol. absolute idiots.
He is willing to give Jon a lot of .oney for that, so you are wrong on that account

A lot of weird revisionist history about Conor in this thread. The reality is he beat Aldo when Aldo had been dominating the division for many years, he hadn't lost a single fight in WEC or UFC at that time and had handily beaten Frankie already.

Conor knocked Aldo out then moved up to fight RDA. I don't know anyone could possibly twist reality to suggest that moving up a weight class and fighting an endless gas tank excellent grappler could be called cherry picking or ducking unless you just forget the context of how RDA was viewed at the time.

He then gets sidetracked with the Diaz fights, goes back to challenging the 155 Eddie (who took it from RDA in the meantime), takes on the most impossible challenge in the history of combat sports by fighting Mayweather in his boxing debut, then fights Khabib....this is like calling what Topuria is doing as ducking....it just depends on your extreme bias as to whether it's ducking or aiming for the biggest prize/achievements possible.

you have to respect brock because he came into the ufc with basically no mma fights and didn't duck anybody. he fought top guys from the beginning to the end

People don't like seeing the belts being disrespected it's really as simple as that. A lot of people feel that no matter what his drawing power was, he shouldn't have been allowed to just go up and challenge without any defenses. And to then run off without ever defending the le belt either.

It's getting undeserved shots, dodging unfavorable matchups, never running it back with anyone, leaving the sport without repaying that gifted lw title shot. It's a combination of things that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, even some of his fans.

I wouldn't call it a duck, but Randy Couture sat out for 15 months due to contract negotiations. Big Nog was the interim champ, but Randy wanted to fight 2-1 Brock Lesnar instead. I wouldn't call it ducking though because he fought Nog after that.

205: Ortiz avoiding Liddell to renegotiate his contract, sat out 10 months then fought Couture who was interim champ.

185: Bisping avoided the entire top 10 twice to fight 46 year old Henderson then WW king GSP.

DC avoiding Miocic

DC was quite literally stripped of his LHW title for refusing to defend against Jones for a 3rd fight because he had a “hand injury” preventing him from accepting the proposed December date meanwhile he was telling the UFC he was fine to instead fight retired Brock a week later in January. Notably not Jones a week later. He also then accepted a fight against Lewis a month before this proposed Jones date in November despite this supposed hand injury, while turning down Stipe who also accepted that date and for that proposed January date too. Was complete horseshit to avoid Jones or Stipe. An imaginary hand injury that appeared or disappeared depending on the level of opponent.

He then proceeded to call out the retired Lesnar instead of either of them, before not fighting either or anybody for like 9 months until forced to after it was either Stipe or Francis who he said he wanted no part of. And Despite saying he’d fight the winner of Jones/Gus 2 and then never mentioning it again after Jones KO’d Gus the way he did.

Not even going to talk about the rest of his career where yes he blatantly also avoided guys like Cain, Bader, Francis, and others. DC is the poster child for having a curated career where his accomplishments came from outside factors instead of DC’s own abilities. The only reason you guys don’t treat him like a Whittaker, who he resembles far closer to than the Izzy to Robert’s time, is because you simply hate Jones and want to make him some legitimate #1 and GOAT fighter. He was a good fighter, overshadowed by his betters. We all saw it multiple times. And he knew it too which is why he avoided them. It’s beyond silly to pretend that wasn’t his career where all his accomplishments have giant fucking asterisks beside them.

For God sake even his “Grand Prix win” involved him stepping into the semi finals after better fighters had already bowed out or been eliminated. Man’s gotten the most overrated breaks in history.

I'm a DC fan but that needed to be said

Ngannou has been ducking Jake Paul for years now
