BATMAN V SUPERMAN Thread v.12

the sad thing is, Warner right now still has the power to call an audible, reorganize, and perhaps re adjust their film schedules to gain back fan confidence, and show they know what they're doing. Individual solo films should be pushed before Justice League to flesh out the greater DCEU world. There should definitely be a solo Batman film before JL. One for sure to gain back our trust.

The biggest mistake they ever made was killing Superman. No matter how they have him scripted to come back. I mean what sense of urgency or danger can Superman ever be in now?? Ohhh he's fighting Darkseid, what's Darkseid going to do? "kill him"? like we haven't seen that before. Superman gets beatdown? Big deal, we've seen him dead, he'll be okay. Dumb.
But he didn't die. Dirt was floating at the end.

I'm not typically the type of person to nitpick every little plot hole in a movie, but I spent so much of the movie thinking why is this happening, why would that person do that, why is this person reacting in this way to this event? It was so drawn out and boring and filled with people doing and saying things that made no sense:

Normally I wouldn't touch any of these with a ten foot pole since so many of them really do reflect problems with the narrative. But I wasn't half as bothered by them so I'll just venture the ways I tried to rationalize them- admittedly weak in many cases..

1. Why would the bat brand encourage criminals to kill other criminals?

No fucking clue. I can only imagine that

a.) there are a lot of superstitious criminals who view Batman as some sort of demon/demonic form and would kill any criminal who came in contact with him so as to ward off the bad juju so to speak.

or

b.) maybe Batman only brands the worst scumbags- the type of people who tend to be targeted by other inmates anyway like rapists/human traffickers, etc...so it's not as the though the brand is so much causing the killings but just helping to single those type of people out so that they will be more easily assaulted by other inmates.

2. Why is Bruce so completely sure Superman is a threat, when he's the aggressive one the whole movie and supes is usually trying to be diplomatic

He knows Supes participated in a fight that leveled Metropolis and killed many, many people. He saw the power firsthand and, I think, the movie gave a vibe that he very much felt insecure/a lack of control in knowing that there was this being who could destroy people without resistance if he wanted to. While he had no reason to believe Superman wanted to, the mere existence of Superman made Bruce feel threatened in the awareness that there might be no recourse to deal with him if he became hostile.

3.Why would Supes refer to his mother as Martha, other than it serves the plot?

lol...I got nothing

[quote[
4. Why is Supes so pissed that Batman is a vigilante taking the law into his own hands, when he's doing the exact same thing with the exact same methods on a global scale?[/quote]

Agree completely that this was VERY weak and just seemed tacked on to make it so that Clark had some awareness/interest in Batman and that the feud wasn't completely one-sided. I guess you could say Supes objects to Batman's brutality when it comes to thwarting criminals but even that makes no sense since Superman absolutely fucking murked a dude when he threatened Lois at the beginning of the movie.

Frankly it might have been more comical if they had Superman not even give a single fuck about Batman, while Batman was completely obsessed with him.

I'm thinking along the lines of the (excuse the pro-wrestling reference) WWE/WCW integration where Booker T. the WCW champ called out The Rock and started talking trash and The Rock took one look at him and was said, "Who in the blue hell are you?"

5. Why would Lois Lane throw away the kryptonite lance and then go back for it?

Throwing it away made sense since she knew her boyfriend was allergic.

But going back to get it only makes sense if you assume that Lois could reasonably conclude that that giant-ass fucker was Kyptonian and would therefore be able to be killed by that spear too.

Which of course makes no sense. How the fuck could she assume that. Doomsday doesn't exactly look Krpytonian..he looks more like he's from Middle Earth or or was mutated in a NYC sewer.

Though you could also operate with the notion that Lois realized that spear by virtue of how it sliced up her typically invulnerable boyfriend's face was ultra-fucking powerful in some way, shape or form and therefore could be used to the heroes' benefit.

6. It's hinted that Luthor is keeping the old photo of WW to use as leverage, but there's no interaction between the two of them. Why?

yeah. weird. good point.

7. WTF is going on during the Flash scene? (After the movie I understood it was eluding to an alternate timeline, but the movie gives zero explanation of wtf is happening.)

had no fucking clue what was going on in that scene and certainly didn't recognize Ezra Miller until a bunch of you guys pointed it out. Yeah that bugged me too.

Also, I generally hate alternate timelines in fiction unless it's pulled off really well like in the movie Looper for instance.

8. Why so many dream sequences?

Pretentiousness and an air of self-importance would be my guess. I did find it funny how in Mad Maxman dream sequence Batman started fighting SUperman's flunkies like Bale fought the League of Shadows militants in TDKR-

9. Why did they show an elaborate action sequence of Batman trying to get the kryptonite, then skip the actual scene where he gets the kryptonite?

I've got nothing.

10. Why did Batman and Superman become best friends as soon as he discovered their moms had the same name?

Humanized him. Batman had just made the point that Supes was never even a man but then immediately realized that he was a man- vulnerable, mortal, fearing for his mother's life and perhaps his own as well. The added factor that Superman wants to save his mother and Batman is tormented by the fact that couldn't save his adds an element. It certainly doesn't make sense that they would be completely on the same page after all that, but I think the fact that he doesn't go through with killing him because of it makes sense.

11. Why was Luthor given unlimited unsupervised access to the alien ship, and why were there suddenly no hazmat suit government people there as soon as it was necessary for him to be there alone?

hahah this one REALLY bothered me. Fucking stupid. So Hunter basically shoots Lex down but the other politician (is that even what he was?) grants Lex carte blanche for...reasons. How's he even have the authority to make that call? Isn't there any oversight?

12. If the ship could sense he wasn't kryptonian, why did it take his orders and completely disregard kryptonian laws and failsafes in place, merely because he said to?

lol yeah Siri really bitched out and let Luthor do what he wanted there.

13. If Batman was so pissed about collateral damage, why did he deliberately lead Doomsday from a deserted island to a populated area, just because the plot device weapon was there?

Well I mean they conveniently were at a part of Gotham that didn't have anybody around...but aside from Snyder's very transparent desire to answer the criticisms of Man of Steel by making the final battle occur in a vacuum, I don't see much of a problem here as Batman knows he's got one shot to kill the damn thing and it's the spear. If that's the case you do everything in your power to get Doomsday there because, otherwise you are dead and everybody is fucked anyway.

My first thought is that he could have just flown out of there to get the spear himself and then flown back to attempt to kill Doomsday but Doomsday isn't exactly a sedentary being and could have been miles away and done tons of damage by the time that happened.

At least by getting him to chase the jet, he could divert him so he was focused on that not tearing the rest of the city a new asshole.

14. Why did Amy Adams look so haggard?

She and DiCaprio have the same affliction where they looked very youthful for so long that when they hit 38-40 range and started to show signs of aging, it was more glaring than your typical gradually aging celebrity.

I think she's still very sexy, just starting to show her age.

15. This version of Batman has no issue killing thugs, but doesn't kill Luthor at the end even though he easily reaches him in prison.

Probably felt Luthor had valuable information that would be lost if they snuffed him out rather than had his interrogated, etc.

WHHHYYYYYYYYYYY. Why.

That's all I've got man. So many of your criticisms are very valid. But I liked a lot of aspects of the movie.

Though I'm also one of those people who liked Amazing Spiderman 2...lol

9. Why did they show an elaborate action sequence of Batman trying to get the kryptonite, then skip the actual scene where he gets the kryptonite?

It's a storytelling technique. By not showing the attack, only the devestation, it has a greater impact than if we saw it unfold. See also the opening scene of the last Fast and Furious movie.

It's one of those techniques that works on a deep level because, thoughout history, humans coming upon devastation is terrifying. Even before we were humans, the greatest heartbreak our ancestors could feel was coming back to their homes and finding everyone dead or missing. Plague, tribesmen/armies, hurricanes/floods/etc.

It's a technique we're basically hardwired to respond to. Another one is the lone survivor, stumbling out of the darkness, and reporting the horrifying news of what happened. This story technique is used everywhere as well, from ghost stories to Frankenstein.

The impact of the way they shot this, however, was diminished once we learned that...

... Lex maniuplated him into stealing it, so he was almost guaranteed to get it even if he wasn't a badass.

I'm not typically the type of person to nitpick every little plot hole in a movie, but I spent so much of the movie thinking why is this happening, why would that person do that, why is this person reacting in this way to this event? It was so drawn out and boring and filled with people doing and saying things that made no sense:

1. Why would the bat brand encourage criminals to kill other criminals?

Batman brands those who talk. And kills those who don't. The ones who are branded, snitched. And snitches get stiches!

Na'mean?

2. Why is Bruce so completely sure Superman is a threat, when he's the aggressive one the whole movie and supes is usually trying to be diplomatic

Supes was directly responsible for Jack's death and countless thousands of others during the battle of Metropolis with Zod. Along with this, Batman had a fear that an all powerful, god-like creature could easily enslave all of mankind.

*The Knightmare and Flashpoint Paradox Easter Egg point to this*

3.Why would Supes refer to his mother as Martha, other than it serves the plot?

Superman: Save my mom!

Batman: Ok.

Superman: K. Bye!

4. Why is Supes so pissed that Batman is a vigilante taking the law into his own hands, when he's doing the exact same thing with the exact same methods on a global scale?

This should be where the internal and external conflict emanates from between Batman and Superman. Two men who view themselves as morale and just, and yet, they find fault in the other.

5. Why would Lois Lane throw away the kryptonite lance and then go back for it?

Originally, she threw it away to protect Superman, as it was the only thing that could kill him. Poor writing results in her going back for it. I don't think the movie directly shows that Lois understands the spear can in fact harm/kill Doomsday.

6. It's hinted that Luthor is keeping the old photo of WW to use as leverage, but there's no interaction between the two of them. Why?

The meta_human directory simply shows that Luthor knew there were others and had proof of their existence.

7. WTF is going on during the Flash scene? (After the movie I understood it was eluding to an alternate timeline, but the movie gives zero explanation of wtf is happening.)

So fucking bummed they didn't elaborate on this part.

SPECULATION:

Basically, Flash goes back in time to warn Batman that he was always right about Superman. To "fear him!" That eventually, a series of events leads to the death of Lois Lane. And that because of her death, Superman takes over the world. It's why Flash exclaims that Lois Lane is the key, and to "find them!" Only the Justice League would be able to defeat Superman and/or possibly Darkseid.

8. Why so many dream sequences?

Not enough for my taste. They should have added more to create Batman's sense of dread and paranoia over Superman, and his own mental instability.

9. Why did they show an elaborate action sequence of Batman trying to get the kryptonite, then skip the actual scene where he gets the kryptonite?

Do you even David Goyer bro?

10. Why did Batman and Superman become best friends as soon as he discovered their moms had the same name?

It's how all friendships start my friend.

11. Why was Luthor given unlimited unsupervised access to the alien ship, and why were there suddenly no hazmat suit government people there as soon as it was necessary for him to be there alone?

Not sure. Maybe after he blew the Senator to Kingdom Come, no one knew about they Kryptonian ship and or cared to ask who was in charge of the whole affair?

GOYYYYYEEERRR!

12. If the ship could sense he wasn't kryptonian, why did it take his orders and completely disregard kryptonian laws and failsafes in place, merely because he said to?

I always thought that activating the ship by the Kryptonian "key" gave access to anyone who was there. Could be wrong. I hate David Goyer and didn't like Man of Steel.

13. If Batman was so pissed about collateral damage, why did he deliberately lead Doomsday from a deserted island to a populated area, just because the plot device weapon was there?

While in the Batwing, Batman tells Alfred about the Kryptonian Spear. It's why he goes back to the city. He believes Superman is dead, and its up to him to kill Doomsday with the spear. He mentions to Wonder Woman that the port is abandoned as well.

14. Why did Amy Adams look so haggard?

Superman took her to Space Mountain? WOOOOO?

15. This version of Batman has no issue killing thugs, but doesn't kill Luthor at the end even though he easily reaches him in prison.

Do you even sequel bro?

WHHHYYYYYYYYYYY. Why.

Zack-Snyder1-660x400.jpg

The prequel comics say Batman has only been killing for the past 2 years. Or at least it's implied because 2 people are talking to each other and they say ever since the Superman-Zod event he's changed.
oif6F6t.jpg

I always took the ending scene where he refuses to brand Lex as him signifying that he's not killing anymore. In the Suicide Squad set pics the Batmobile no longer has guns on it. Unless they are going to add the guns on there in post production, I think that might be indicating something.

was trash. And ben affleck was a terrible Batman. That is all.

#sagebless

Shit movie. ben affleck was a terrible batman choice.

This thread is getting way too deep into nerd stuff for my liking. I am out of here.

See you guys in the next justice leauge, or solo batman movie thread.

On Batman not killing Luthor at the end, take note that Batman's views changed and mellowed out at this point. He didn't kill Clark, and he even reconsidered his penchant for branding -- signifying that he perhaps wants to become the non-killimg Batman from this point on.

I honestly think some of u guys give Marvel too much credit.

The only good Marvel films were

Iron Man
Winter Soldier
Guardians of the Galaxy
Avengers

Marvel has been at it since 2008, so that's 1 good movie every 2 years, hardly stellar.

What's even more unfortunate is that Marvel seems to follow a formula. Action scene (with witty one liners) - exposition mixed with some comedy - action scene- some more exposition - finale fight sequence.

Not saying Marvel does a bad job, their movies can be very entertaining, but they lack an edge, they are predictable as a child's bed time story.

You can't say the same for BvS and Man of Steel, which is why I can appreciate it much more, despite their flaws.

I freely admit to being one of the incredulous naysayers when teh Assfleck was initially announced as the new Bats but ironically he turned out to be one of the only saving graces in an otherwise dull and uninspiring offering from Snyder. Gal Gadot can also hold her head high of as she exuded nothing but awesomeness as the new incarnation of WW. Cavill on the other hand did a great job of solidifying his status as one of the biggest planks working in Hollywood today, he sucked in MOS and he sucked equal amounts of ass in this.

Haven't seen Ant man but I hear it's good
Cap 1 was good
Hulk reboot was good
Avengers 2 was good

The only point that made me think anything other than this is just shit writing is 9. Could this be a premonition type sequence showing a post apocalyptic world which takes place in the sequel. Those winged creatures were Darkseids minions right? Not sure how the kryptonite would fit into that theory though.

Edit; ok a quick google brought up this... make of it what you will

2 "if there is only 1% chance, we must take it as" bla bla, WTF, did he even see the movie?
3 is he 7 years old?
4 Bats got "cruel"
5 Shes not as clueless as fellow who ask those questions
6 what RedFox said and, same reason why Obama didn't interact with George W lol
7 cameo, hints about future films
8 why not, and why everyone assumes that Sups "she was my world" is about Lois, not MARTHA. Bats promised to save who?
9 they saved the assault on Lex's warehouse for that 3 hour BR
10 why bffs? did they hug and sang hippie songs together? the very little dialog they had after they went to do their thing was about Doomsday and WW
why are the goldfishes call that bffs?
11because every merican knows every black op and shady shit US of A does, or, he killed everyone who knew/gave him the permission.
12 only legit question
13 WW asked Bats why, and he gave her answer, watch the movie bro.
14 when you 7, ehh, nevermind....
15 Bats didn't time travel there bro, cops let him in, or do you think he killed them too? plus what RedFox said.

It does not take worlds greatest detective to see that this tread has many Marvel fan boys talking shit.
and even more Siskells and Eberts type of experts who must be right and that's it, must be right.
and they call me a fan boy lol, punisher fan no like Bats, lol, obvious.
Its a fricking movie, some like it , some don't, and its no surprise that haters feel like they must shit on it.
"wherever You go, whatever You do, I'll be watching" -- Bats
lol

I'm not typically the type of person to nitpick every little plot hole in a movie, but I spent so much of the movie thinking why is this happening, why would that person do that, why is this person reacting in this way to this event? It was so drawn out and boring and filled with people doing and saying things that made no sense:

I noticed some of the editing issues in the 2nd act, the lack of establishing shots threw a lot of people off but the basic subplots weren't that hard to follow.

1. Why would the bat brand encourage criminals to kill other criminals?

This is Batman inspired by TDKR Miller story(the one that snaps Jokers neck and shoots mutants) if he hadn't found a new Robin to leash him to his sanity. He would only mark human traffickers, serial killers and child molesters(according to the news story), he wasn't encouraging people to kill them but marking them as the worst of the worst, prisoners know if they have a bat mark they are scum or chimo's and treated as such.

2. Why is Bruce so completely sure Superman is a threat, when he's the aggressive one the whole movie and supes is usually trying to be diplomatic

He's not but he realizes the power a god has on Earth, it contrasts nicely with the Luthor plot, and begs the question, what makes Batman good and Luthor evil? Add that to the fact that when Flash visits him he creates a paradox where parallel Earth(Earth 2?) memories combine with his own(Knightmare future sequence, no this is not a 'dream'), plus Flash's warning all contribute to his suspicions, this along with his fragile post Robin/Joker incident mindset creates a ticking time bomb. The opening action sequence with Bruce watching Zod/Superman go at it showed how powerless Bruce felt watching the destruction, the same powerlessness he experienced watching his parents(especially Martha in this version), die right in front of him.

3.Why would Supes refer to his mother as Martha, other than it serves the plot?

They set this up early in the film with yet another Death of Martha/Thomas Wayne scene, this time Thomas actually attempts to rescue Martha(Superman attempting to rescue Martha), while Bruce watches in agony as his mother(note not Thomas Wayne as most of the retelling of the deaths focus on), passes. As stated by another poster this humanizes Superman to Bruce, it's basically his 'Rosebud', and with that Batman turns from unhinged anti-hero back to where he was prior to Robin/Joker incident as he now has a mission to save Martha which is something his father and himself wasn't able to do.

4. Why is Supes so pissed that Batman is a vigilante taking the law into his own hands, when he's doing the exact same thing with the exact same methods on a global scale?

Although they spelled out some of the torture and branding sequences I did not believe they delved deeply enough into this, there is a shot of Clark visiting Gotham to investigate which should be on the Director's cut.

5. Why would Lois Lane throw away the kryptonite lance and then go back for it?

She threw it away from Superman to stop it from causing more pain to him, I had more of an issue with Batman just leaving it behind, also he should have rescued her from drowning to give him something other than running to do in the Doomsday sequence.

6. It's hinted that Luthor is keeping the old photo of WW to use as leverage, but there's no interaction between the two of them. Why?

Cheap plot device, I thought all the mini 'trailers' on the computer were badly shoe horned in and probably an executive decision. I would've went with Luthor having some type of artifact from WW's homeland.

7. WTF is going on during the Flash scene? (After the movie I understood it was eluding to an alternate timeline, but the movie gives zero explanation of wtf is happening.)

It serves two purposes, if you're a comic book fan you get the Darkseid nods and realize this is some type of Flashpoint paradox alternate reality, general audiences can view it as a Bruce 'dream' which goes into some of his paranoia and slowly losing reality in relation to Superman.

8. Why so many dream sequences?

How many were there really? The opening sequence is a flashback not a dream, then the Bruce kid dream with the bats. The Flashpoint paradox wasn't a dream(as shown by the papers still flying around when Bruce 'wakes' up). Superman talking to his dad was set up exactly like a revenge tragedy soliloquy, which Snyder chooses to do visually.

9. Why did they show an elaborate action sequence of Batman trying to get the kryptonite, then skip the actual scene where he gets the kryptonite?

Popular movie trope, may have an extended scene in the Director's cut, but either way you can fill in the blanks.

10. Why did Batman and Superman become best friends as soon as he discovered their moms had the same name?

See above, Superman is no longer a god amongst men, but a man with super powers to Bruce, and a way for redemption for him and his father not being able to save Martha Wayne.

11. Why was Luthor given unlimited unsupervised access to the alien ship, and why were there suddenly no hazmat suit government people there as soon as it was necessary for him to be there alone?

Corporations own politicians and the Govt. this is nothing new in the good ole US of A.

12. If the ship could sense he wasn't kryptonian, why did it take his orders and completely disregard kryptonian laws and failsafes in place, merely because he said to?

He had to hack the ship, does a lot to show just how brilliant Luthor is.

13. If Batman was so pissed about collateral damage, why did he deliberately lead Doomsday from a deserted island to a populated area, just because the plot device weapon was there?

He does say it is evacuated.

14. Why did Amy Adams look so haggard?

Yeah I don't like her as a sexy Lois, bring back the Lois and Clark Lois.

15. This version of Batman has no issue killing thugs, but doesn't kill Luthor at the end even though he easily reaches him in prison.

It's called character development, as stated above the 'Martha' scene you so despise turns Batman around from his TDKR self into the caped crusader we all know and love.

First Avenger was good. Thor was fun, and introduced Loki. Age of Ultron was a misfire, but only compared to the OG Avengers.

IM 2 and 3 were major disappointment compared to Iron Man.

As for Marvel being predictable, is DC really any better? You knew that after throwing hands, Batman and Superman were going to team up. Hell, they gave away most of the major plot points in the damn trailer.

Also, Marvel now use their characters to tell stories in different genres.

First Avenger = War Film.

Winter Soldier = Spy Thriller.

GoTG = Space Opera.

Avengers = Alien Invasion

Age of Ultron = Mad Scientist

Ant Man = Crime Thriller
