BATMAN V SUPERMAN Thread v.12

Has the largest Friday to Sunday drop of any superhero movie in the states.

Huh. I've looked at a lot of different stuff while working on my gross predictions but this is a new metric to me. I'll have to add it to my spreadsheet and see how it shakes out for predicting longevity.
So I just spent a bunch of time updating my spreadsheet with this data...and it sucks. My dataset is twice as large as the one used in the article and I found virtually zero correlation between the Friday/Sunday Drop and Opening Weekend/Total Gross or Opening Week/Total Gross. This means the retention over the course of opening weekend tells you jacks squat about a film's legs. That said, BvS's number in that category are about twice as bad as the median which is hardly a positive.

I'm hoping the R-rated version contains Amy Adams titties in the bathtub scene. That whole scene I felt like Dave Chappelle in my mind. "C'mon Tittay.. C'mon Tittay"

Did the large Monday take help the BO predictions?

It doesn't but you get full frontal dong from pretty much all the male cast

Went with a couple of dudes from my class and we all thought it was really good. We saw the reviews and heard all the whining, but at the end of the day we still wanted to see it. We all thought it was a pretty good movie, one dude thought it was great. Affleck was the man.

If you're on the fence about going to go see it, don't listen to any of us...go watch it and form your own opinion.

My data doesn't have day-by-day breakdowns. And Opening Weekend/Opening Week is also a poor predictor of longevity so a strong Monday doesn't tell as much as you might hope.

The real first useful data point that I've found in predictions is the weekend-over-weekend retention numbers. So by next Monday we'll have a much better idea of where things stand. As of now, the film could end up anywhere between $309.7-633.6mil (that's the 95% confidence interval based on the historical performance of about 45 comic book films in the last ~10 years). If it matches MoS's retention numbers then it'll end up at around $380mil.

Damn, that would mean it's looking pretty bleak that this film hits the $975 million threshold to have any chance of a Directors cut having a limited release in theaters.

That's just the domestic number, not the worldwide total. International numbers are much harder to predict. There's lots of different markets, the reporting isn't as detailed, and the differences with exchange rates and such make it extremely difficult to make predictions for the worldwide total. If BvS maintains a 40/60 domestic/international split then the $975 combined isn't an impossible number.

If I'm unsure about seeing a movie I read Heavyarms/Dragonlords reviews, get the consensus on the movie thread, and lastly I see what the RLM crew thought in their HiTb review.

Generally I find my tastes align with those 3....

I had reservations about this movie...I kind of want to see it more now because it sounds like a mess
I have a feeling this is going to be exactly like Man of Steel. I really didn't give a shit about it when it first came out. It looked completely bland. Caught it on HBO a few months ago and was incredibly underwhelmed.

This looks to be more of the same. No need for me to waste money on them trying to play catchup to Marvel.

Deadline is reporting that it made 31m overseas on monday

Not sure if that will help with your spreadsheet or not

Kevin Smith Says BATMAN V SUPERMAN Didn't Have a Heart

Kevin-Smith-Batman-v-Superman-No-Heart-Dragonlord.jpg

Kevin Smith doesn't typically hold back when it comes to superhero films, and many might agree with his analysis on Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

On his latest Hollywood Babble-On podcast with Ralph Garman, Smith brought up the film's heart or lack of one.

"Remember before when we were talking about Flash, and that it has heart, humor, and spectacle," Smith said. "The movie I felt like didn't really have a heart. It was certainly fucking humorless, there was nothing funny going on in that world whatsoever, but it had lots of spectacle. Like you can't take that away from Snyder. Boy, he knows how to like compose a frame and how to setup a shot. Beautiful visual stylist but you need more than just the pictures, you need like characterization and these characters seemed off character, particularly Superman."

Wow, I thought the movie was very messy myself but I can't believe Smith didn't heap it with praise. I used to listen to his podcast and he loves every damn thing. I'm genuinely shocked.

Because what this movie really needed was another 30 minutes?

The extra scenes in the directors cut did help the pacing of Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven".
Dunno, never saw the directors cut. Thought the regular version was ok.

But Kingdom of Heaven did not have at least half an hour of pointless dream sequences, flashbacks, origin stories that we have seen 500 times, and Bruce Wayne staring at his parents grave.

Edit: Oh, and incredibly gratuitous slow motion meant to make some scenes seem important, but made them laughable.

I watched for the second time today and i enjoyed it more this time around. It's an 8 to me, not an amazing movie but for a Batman vs Superman movie i thought it did what it needed to do to make things fun.

You know you screwed up a superhero movie bigtime if Kevin Smith is critical of it.

In fairness, Kevin Smith enjoyed BvS more after the second viewing. But he still admits that there are a lot of problems with the movie and it didn't have a "moral."

I can also see some posters soften their stance and enjoyed it more after watching BvS a second time. There's also a chance I might enjoy the movie more after future viewings. But I also consider first impressions very important because that is the truest, purest, most honest opinion you have after the first viewing.

It's like watching a horror or mystery movie, you loved it the first time you watched it. But after the second time watching it, it's not as thrilling or exciting since you already know what to expect.
