Bas Rutten VS Wanderlei Silva

Hard to say who wins that fight. Bas told this story on the JRE a few months ago too. Rogan was going insane about how crazy that fight would have been. Bas said he was in the best shape he had ever been in and was making his sparring partners quit.

Wand turned the fight down, too bad.

Bas is a FAAAAAR more technical striker than Wand. Bas would have picked him apart.

I think fantasy matchups go in the wasteland.
Wanderlei would have taken this guaranteed.

On the rua? Bas by creativity.

"Don't you ever do dis."

Wish it would have happened

Bas is no joke but in 01 - 03, no one was going to defeat Wand.

Nobody could stop Wanderlei in his prime. Nobody.

But in a streetfight, Bas has a bit of an advantage.

IDK, I'd still take Wand. Drops Bas with a wild right hand in a brawl, then finishes him with knees/punts on the ground.

Not anybody that faced Wand in his prime, but some of today's LHW's would have beaten prime Wand. Jones would have probably. Machida and Gustafsson have a good chance.

@TS, why K1 rules?

Vitor, Cro Cop, and Henderson all stopped him in his prime. Or wait, was his prime after Vitor and before Cro Cop?

True, according to Sherdog....if a fighter goes on a long win streak then they are in their prime. But as soon as they lose, they are suddenly out of their prime.

Wandy would have edged him, I feel. Would have been an awesome match though.

Very tough one to call.
Wand was an animal in Pride. Bas has always been extremely dangerous.
Too bad it never happened: to those saying Bas was too technical for Wand, Wand beat several guys whose stand up was more technical (Mezguer, Page for instance).
But on the other hand, Bas was so badass, vintage warrior.
No K1 rules, no Pride rules, I would have loved to see it under good old Valetudo rules.

I think it would be a great match-up for Bas. He was way more technical than Wand and Wand's style would play right into his hands.

Nah, it would have to be after Ortiz, because if "prime" Wand was after Vitor, Tito Ortiz beat a "prime" Wand.

I would argue that Page only has great boxing whereas Bas had a whole arsenal of kicks that Wand would have to consider when launching any offence.

Not to mention Bas' love of inflicting non-alcohol related liver damage!

It's sad that he fought mostly jokes and grade B-C fighters during that period .

Wand is no Joke but he's not the best , far from it .

Liddell had just lost to Couture, making him the #2 UFC LHW (rather than #1). Rampage beat Liddell and Wand vaporized Rampage in the 2003 GP, making Wanderlei and Couture the top 2 LHWs at the time.

Your list of jokes includes: Sakuraba (top 5 LHW at the time, UFC tourn. champ), Yuki Kondo (King of Pancrase, UFC LHW title contender), CroCop, Dan Henderson, Mark Hunt and Guy Mezger (UFC tourn. champion)
