Why are the only theocracies in the world right now (except for the Vatican) Islamic? It's simple, because Islam contains a system of governance, the Sharia, that dictates politics, economics, criminal law etc. There isn't anything in the world comparable that is as encompassing and functions as state law.

Do you have proof for that 40% claim? Why do they use religion as an "organizing force"? Surely the politics itself should be the organizing force they "rally around"?

I looked for the data interfaith marriages in Iraq but I couldn’t find primary source data, however after googling there are some figures sited in various articles that aren’t far off in the image below:



But my broader point was that intermarriage between Sunnis and Shias was VERY common in Iraq prior to the war. Does that seem like a society where Sunnis and Shias hate each for religious reasons? The Sunni Shia conflict is all political, every day Sunnis and Shias get along very well, take it from a Sunni who has had made Shia friends. It isn’t a thing at all.
