Movies AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH (Dragonlord's Reaction, post #68)

It's funny, there's the standard li(n)e on here about how everyone has been watching the UFC since 1993, and we all chuckle to ourselves because we know very few people on here actually have been. It's weird how barely anybody on here has even seen the Avatar movies and less like them. It'd be hilarious if this third one made 8 billion dollars yet gets a 10% on Rotten Tomatoes and everyone walked around talking about how they've never even heard of these movies.

Anyway, I'm planning on rewatching the first two on Thursday (for the first time on my new big 4k TV) and then seeing the third one in IMAX 3D on Friday. I can't wait to give Cameron more of my money.

I don't have an IMAX near me. The best I can do is XD in 3D with the vibrating seat. I'm debating whether I should pay the extra $10 for the vibrating seat or just watch it in a regular seat.

But it's James Cameron. Of course I'll be there.

About time you got a 4K tv. Which did you get?

I'm not a big tech guy (no shit, hence my not having one until now) so I don't know much about the TV. I just know it's Samsung, it's the biggest TV I've ever owned, and the quality is fantastic. And funny enough, I got it last year around this holiday time along with a 4K Blu-ray player, and the upgrade was for the express purpose of being able to enjoy the long-awaited 4K release of Cameron's The Abyss, which is one of my all-time favorites. I've since gotten all of Kubrick's films on 4K (still waiting for Lolita to get the 4K treatment) and randomly grabbed Raging Bull. But I don't have Elon Musk money so I'm not starting a giant 4K collection. It's nice being able to stream in 4K though and get the upscaled quality

Amazon is the best place to buy 4K movies. You can even return them if you dont like the quality so its like a modern day Blockbuster except you get your money back. Theyre great to buy only on sale so I still grab some from time to time. Glad you finally got the tv now so at least when I message you having a 4K digital, you're all set now lol

Raging Bull is known for having one of the best 4K transfers FYI

Haha, I've streamed and downloaded 4K shit, but dealing with digital files like that will also be a new experience for me. But yes, I'm now equipped to enjoy the best quality versions of what I watch. The main thing that bums me out, though, is what I've learned is called "grain." Apparently, the people who do Kubrick's stuff like the fuzzy look. I don't. Barry Lyndon on 4K didn't look half as good as I was expecting/hoping and Eyes Wide Shut looked worse. They're Kubrick, so I simply have to have the best available for the GOAT, but I was none too impressed. 2001 and The Shining, on the other hand, look fucking GLORIOUS and make me very happy to have my 4K setup. It does seem to be a crapshoot, though, so your Amazon approach sounds the smart way to go.

Since Scorsese gave it the old school look of B&W boxing of the '40s and '50s that'd be broadcast on TV, it's not exactly a visual treat as it doesn't have colors to pop, but it's definitely crisp B&W and I do like the rich shadows. Looked good to me 😁

Amazing how little buzz this movie is getting. Has anyone seen it yet?

I saw it last Wednesday. Sorry, didn't have time to write a proper review, was very busy with the business. I gave Fire and Ash a 7/10 or 7.5/10. I was entertained. Visuals look spectacular, special effects is top notch and the action was epic. No surprises there. Movie was very repetitive though. We all know how Avatar borrowed a lot of tropes from other movies. But this time, it felt like Cameron was even cannibalizing his previous two Avatar movies. You will probably think to yourselves, "didn't I see this scene before?" There were a few times Cameron teased the movie would veer into a different and a more interesting direction but unfortunately Fire and Ash ultimately ended up in a very familiar place. My favorite part was Varang (played amazingly by Oona Chaplin), the leader of the Ash tribe. She steals every scene she was in. I did not think I would be attracted by a Na'vi but here we are.

I suspected this would be the case as soon as I saw the trailer. Bummed I'm not going to be able to give Cameron opening weekend money, but I'm so stoked to see this.

Can't give you a like(
But your "7.5" is one of the criteria for me to watch it.

Everything great technically. Visuals and sound an grest action. The story is just so plain an tired- like DL said its very repetitive eith the first 2 films even . Just not very creative in the story considering how creative the world he built is.

Update: July 18, 2025

First Trailer for James Cameron's AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH [Updated with Official Trailer]

With “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” James Cameron takes audiences back to Pandora in an immersive new adventure with Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the Sully family. Also stars Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass and Kate Winslet. In theaters Dec. 19.

I was going to take my date but noticed it was 3 hours +? 🥴

Outrageous.

I'll go see it and be entertained and then go on with my life. Don't need lasting impact or whatever for ticket price.

Damn near 3 1/2 hours???

No thanks
Just because it's 3 1/2 hrs I'm tempted to watch it. We have those theaters with limited seating, recliner seat shit half a mile away from my house. But then it's Avatar...

I watched over the weekend.
Visual and audial delicacy. Nice action and all.

Plotwise... It was a sad "meh".

P.s. Varang was sexy as feck. Butt, out of all the blue monkey female faces, hers was the closest to that of a human, proportions-wise.
So it made sense that hot-blooded Sherdog men would be attracted to her.

Both Neytiri's and Ronal's (reef chief bitch) faces have weird alien, cat-like proportions, not at all beautiful imho.

First Avatar was a revolutionary movie for 3D and visual effects and had meh story. This just has meh story I suppose? I haven't watched the second one yet.

Their faces being cat like is precisely why @lsa likes them!
