Austria Bans Burqa, Introduces Mandatory Integration Courses

The one final thing they need to do is send these poor people to church and get the REAL RELIGION AKA CHRISTIANITY.

“Our very unity has been strengthened by our pluralism...we establish no religion in this country, we command no worship, we mandate no belief, nor will we ever. Church and state are, and must remain, separate. All are free to believe or not believe, all are free to practice a faith or not, and those who believe are free, and should be free, to speak of and act on their belief.”

Guess who said that.

Tesla absolutely was born and raised in the Austrian empire and had Austrian citizenship. He visited an Austrian, German-speaking school.
Obviously large parts of the Austrian empire aren't part of Austria today.

Listz was also born in the Austrian empire an received education in Vienna.
Ethinc Croat, and ethnic Hungarian born in their countries which predated the Austrian Empire by over 500 years, were only part of that empire for a small blip in time, and reverted back to their origins right after WW2.

I know both Serbs and Croats have claimed Tesla, but this is honestly the first time I've heard he's Austrian. Liszt (meaning flour in Hungarian) very few people know anything about, and I'm surprised he got drafted by Austria.

Were people born in imperial Hong Kong British? I have a buddy who claims that for shits and giggles, but he does recognize that he's actually Chinese.

Pretty sure Tesla was educated in Austria, hence the claim.

Well, they could (had to) legally claim they were Austrians and they were born into the Austrian 'system' if you want.
I think if a scientist is born into the Austrian empire, visits a German speaking school, learns from and cooperates with other Austrian scientist, then his accomplishments should be attributed to Austria rather than the nationality of his parents, yes. Not saying Tesla is the best example but in general I actually do believe that makes sense.
Wikipedia also lists him under 'Austrian scientists'

Good...bout fucking time.

@JonnyRingo84 , your thoughts on this?

i think integration courses are a good idea.

i think diversity in culture is a good thing. we do benefit imo, but......you can have too much of anything. if people entering the country are just on a completely different cultural page than the current inhabitants, then thats a problem.

as for the ban on the burqa....idk how i feel about that. i despise the burqa, and there is something satisfying about people being told they cannot wear it. but i also value freedom. people should be able to wear what they want, provided they arent infringing on someone else's rights. so i guess maybe my stance on that would be, if you dont want people wearing burqas in your country, then dont allow immigrants from cultures that wear burqas. i dont like the idea of making laws restricting dress.

Ghandi was born under British rule, went to an English speaking school, was educated in British law in English, etc. He's no Brit.

Don't get me wrong. I love Austria, have lived there, have gone back to visit, and is my favorite country right after Canada. From what I know of Tesla he's never claimed to be Austrian. Shrug, but this little side convo isn't a sticking point with me.

It should actually be the other way around. Austrians should have to learn the language of the immigrants and refugees.

Pooooor Austrian ears having to hear another language.
"Another" language? Austrians spoke pretty good English while I was there visiting in 2010.

So you think assimilation is accepting them but we can't go on with some stuff we normally do anymore if it offends them? Like eating pork bacon at their presence?

Pfft English. The language of the racists!

I'm talking about Arabic and Punjabi. Those kinds of languages. It's extremely disrespectful to not lean the language of immigrants coming into your privileged country.

Not bad but I'd say you're throwing the baby out with the bath water and risk losing the upside of immigration.

The problem is they are asking to live in the country and as such they are being asked to abide by the laws of the country. it's not like our countries are kidnapping them and forcing residency on them and there are plenty of Muslim countries where their customs are practised.

I see no problems dictating a law to people wanting to live in my country, that is how you stop chaos. Someone wants to visit or live in my house they either abide my rules or do not enter. Whether in already or not it's the same and non conditional.

Good.
Shouldln't stop with the Burqa and Niqab.
Should also ban Halal/Kosher slaughter like some European nations are looking at.

thats more than reasonable for most laws.

but dress?????? meh.

If the police can't distinguish who/what you are than its a problem.
If it's creating a lot of discord than that's a problem.
If the vast majority of the population want the law it's a law.

They want all the good living there they should except the bad. Integration isn't a dirty word.

fair enough.

not imo. people need to be more resilient and able to handle differences in other people, as long as those differences arent directly impacting you. i dont like burqas either, but you're a weak MFer if you cant handle someone wearing a burqa around you without getting bent out of shape.

If the vast majority of the population want the law it's a law.

F'ing horrible idea.

integration isnt a dirty word, but you can get too F'ing crazy with it, just like you can with diversity for diversity's sake.

fair enough.

Hardly think it's weak to dislike something as confrontational as hiding your identity. It's weak to expect everyone to cater to your every whim as a guest.

Edit just learnt something new, replies outside the quote marks.

F'ing horrible idea.

I don't mind it, as long as everyone respects the process it works. After all the process is in all areas of decision making.

This is true but the Burka is being forced on the country the country is not forcing them to eat a national dish of pork sausages

fair enough.

You realise he said "vast majority", right?
I'm assuming vast majority means something like 75% upwards. With a 75% solid support of something across the country you can generally change constitutions which means changing the nature of core rights.

Which is fair enough

Edit: I'm not advocating changing a constitution to make a law. I really don't think asking that people show their face while walking around in public is a rights issue but rather a law and order / security issue
