Australian Gaming PC thread

Wow... WTF, talk about going down a rabbit hole looking at keyboards...

I picked the Lian Li and dropped the primary 970 evo drive and just stuck with the 2TB 980.

I was just going to edit my original post after looking through those specific benchmarks on that site.

One last question. Do you have any suggestions for a good keyboard? I have a razor one but it is old and has seen better days.
Wow... WTF, talk about going down a rabbit hole looking at keyboards...
Yeah, it really is.

One thing is certain: get a mechanical keyboard. Secondly, I would recommend you spring for one with hot-swappable keys. Beware that some of the more well-received cheap brands among gamers like Redragon, while good, will boast their keyboards can do this, but actually can't. Some units even come with a key puller that is pointless.

Learn about the basics about the keys and switch types here. You almost certainly want Red, maybe Brown. Many like special silent switches.

This website is amazing:

Among the more economical brands available in Australia, I would highly recommend Tecware. If you're spending big, you're probably after a Corsair.

Tbh I would recommend Ducky over Corsair, as someone who has both, Ducky is superior.

Great recommendations by @Madmick , though personally I'd be holding off until the new AMD CPUs come out to see how that plays out. Alternatively, I'd get a DDR5 compatible motherboard for longetivity.

I haven't spotted this in the thread but at the price range you're looking at there's very very marginal gains between various options so my recommendation is to think a lot more about your monitor. A big, quality good monitor with a high refresh rate is such a wonderful luxury and can change your experience far more than a 2% frame rate increase.

Personally I love ultrawide and am on a 38" ultrawide at 3840 x 1600, 144hz refresh rate. It's a fantastic monitor for games where you want to really soak in the atmosphere.

Deciding on a monitor is also going to guide your view of where to spend the rest of your money - but in your case it looks like you just want the best, and that's going to be an awesome setup. If you go to 4K monitors bear in mind that the CPU, if remotely capable, will barely matter in most games as they will all be GPU bound so if you decide to cut costs and are at 4K, that's a freebie.

Well shit... I just moved into a new house and have been sending lots of money on various things. I transferred money the day before but checked my Visa last night to see it hadn't got there from my bank yet and discovered I was a couple of grand short until it arrived in my Visa account.

I just got home from work and saw the money had transferred. Logged in to purchase and:

In general supply of 3000 series Nvidia cards is quite good in Australia so it should be fairly simple to pick another.

I use Umart a lot and they have very good supply right now:
https://www.umart.com.au/GeForce-RTX-3080-Ti_1077C.html

There's also only very marginal performance gains between 3080, 3080ti and 3090. I know you have a big budget but you could easily pick the 3080 and never know the difference. It's all enthusiast grade stuff where you pay a fortune for 2% - 5% difference.

True. He didn't offer a budget, though, so perhaps he'll just buy one of the best on top of his PC. With a PC of the caliber he's intending to buy, I wouldn't consider anything but official G-Sync Ultimate monitors, or possibly one of the HDR-capable G-Sync options:

it’s been about a year and a half but the last time someone from Australia in a discord group asked me about keyboards, Ducky stuff was about the same price as Corsair stuff.

If @Contempt happens to be looking at that list, I own the AW3821DW - an Alienware 38" ultrawide. It's currently on sale for $1749 AUD but I bought it on an earlier sale at $1499 AUD.

https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/ali...1dw/apd/210-axni/monitors-monitor-accessories

Pros:
Big screen, great resolution, great refresh rate and response time. G-Sync Ultimate certification. The headline items are all very good. Cheap for 38". Build quality is very good.

Con:
Bad local dimming, very noticeable on menus with a pitch black background and white text. Not really noticeable during the vast majority of gameplay but it's a very real thing. HDR is on the low end so honestly not terribly worth it.

I can confirm you don’t want Alienware period. You’re hard pressed to find a worse dealer than Dell/Alienware. They’re honestly borderline scammers

I mainly just didn't give a fuck abut researching the latest kit.

After all the effort by @Madmick helping me pick the hardware, by the time I get home the next day to purchase it, half the components were sold out.

Fuck the market currently.

Yeah it is frustrating, but you will only be frustrated and out a bunch of money if you go Dell/Alienware. This looks like the same case in the OP:

it’s so bad it’s funny. Except that it’s not funny when they are screwing people out of thousands of dollars with that bullshit. I seriously wish they would go out of business

Just go to Fyshwick, they will build you a custom one with the same amount of effort.

https://www.msy.com.au/fyshwick/8-msy-systems
@Contempt

TOTAL = $5194

You might be a bit disappointed that the 12900K is sold out, but the 12700K is nearly identical in games (see below). Also the larger versions of the only PCIe 4.0 SSD they stock are out of stock (the Samsung 980 Pro), but the build above is a viable option that carries the same GPU you fancied.

*Edit*
Note that they will have to move the ARGB fans the case comes with to the top and the rear to make room for that CPU Cooler in the front (the only place it can be installed). The NZXT X63 is a 280mm option if you prefer RGB-lit fans like that to be installed in the front-- assuming the RAD is thin enough there is room between it and the motherboard to install it in the top. It would be worth talking to whoever is gonna build the thing at their store to get advice on the case that he thinks will best support your build.

Fellow nerds...

I last went to buy a gaming PC and then moved house, renovated the utter crap out of it (still ongoing) but I need to buy a new PC for several reasons:
1) Lab - so needs much compute and memory (128gb preferred) Need two physical NIC's so motherboard plus expansion card unless there is a dual NIC mb available(which would be ideal)
2) Gaming.

So noting that the shiny new AMD processors and 4k series NVIDIA available, I was thinking something like:

Edit: OK after fucking around and tweaking it(read: adding more expensive shit) for over an hour, I think it's about right. The only bit I'm not sure of is the case... quiet is obviously better and I have zero interest in flashy LED shit etc... oh and the motherboard... NFI apart from AM5 DDR5 for 7k series AMD /shrugs

Don't give a crap, tax deductible anyway... actually, you just reminded me that I had three windows 10 pro OEM DVD's sitting there unopened.

I'll remove that.

Oh, well yes, a lot of thoughts. Principally, you're overspending...by a lot. I mean, massively.

CPU
I would strongly suggest you consider the R7-7700X instead of the R9-7950X. I went into some detail on this regarding heat output in this post:
https://forums.sherdog.com/posts/169559870/

The heat output is so high with the 7950X & 13900K that many of those who do desire these processors for their editing performance are discussing the strategy of undervolting and underclocking the CPUs for better temps & less noise. That issue is solved for gamers, simply, by opting for the 7700X. What is sacrificed? For gaming, nothing. Per gaming performance, overall, the 7950X is fractionally better than the 7700X. About 1%-2%. It's sometimes inferior depending on the game:
relative-performance-games-1280-720.png

Average_1080pr.png

RAM
You don't need 64GB, you'd already be overbuilding with 32GB, and I think 32GB is appropriate, if building today, though normally I wouldn't discourage anyone too strongly from springing for too much RAM. There are already games that recommend 32GB if at a 4K resolution, after all, even if that's only on the most demanding fringe. However, holy ballsack, your guy's RAM market is fucking trash, all of those sticks are gouged, and it's no better on PCPP. Seriously. Settle for 32GB. You can sail with it. You want to at least try to target 5600MHz+. Also, BTW, the cost is for a pair. You don't need two pairs. You actually have 128GB of RAM selected (two 2x32GB pairs). That's absurd unless this is intended to be a professional editing machine. So choose either of the below, and you need just one. The 32GB is actually faster memory, due to tighter timings on the AMP profile, so you'd get better performance:
(32GB) https://www.auspcmarket.com.au/memo...ngeance-32gb-2x-16gb-ddr5-5600mhz-c36-memory/
(64GB) https://www.auspcmarket.com.au/memo...e-64gb-2x-32gb-ddr5-5600mhz-c40-memory-black/

PSU
I don't think you need nearly that much PSU, especially if you opt for the 7700X as I have recommended, and as good as that particular PSU is, btw, that's a damn near criminal markup on the unit. This MSI A1000G 1000W Gold unit is a Tier A quality PSU manufactured by CWT costing you 1/3rd the price:
https://www.auspcmarket.com.au/powe...80-gold-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-black/
If you want to step above that the best option with that store is the Cooler Master V Platinum 1300W for +$120 AUD more:
https://www.auspcmarket.com.au/powe...latinum-series-1300w-80-modular-power-supply/

Network Adapter Card
The Startech-- why do you need this? Your motherboard has faster 2.5 Gb/s ethernet built into it. This Startech card is designed to allow your computer to access four different internet connections simultaneously. That's something I can't imagine would be required anywhere outside niche business settings. Don't buy this.

Case
Your selected Corsair Quiet 110C case is incompatible with your selected CPU cooler. It does NOT support 360mm radiators. This is why, even if you don't use the website to find/purchase the parts, I urge you to run a compatibility check by entering your parts in PCPP:
https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/X6yLH2
"Quiet" cases often aren't as quiet to achieve the same interior thermal level as high-airflow cases. That's why I recommend high-airflow. Additionally, for a 360mm cooler, I strongly recommend cases that have a side mount. You may also opt for one with a top mount. These mount choices are so that you can still keep (or put) your case fans in the front and back for front-to-back airflow. For top mounted 360mm, you have to be careful to double check that the 360mm RAD has clearance of the motherboard once installed on top. That means you may have to look up the RAD thickness. This isn't always caught by PCPP's compatibility filter. The side mounts are designed to avoid this caveat.

By side mount I'm talking about this. here is the Corsair 5000D Airflow. The side mount is the middle 360mm in the top image.

5000d-and-airflow-rad-cap-120.png

Below, you can see it installed with the three visible colored fans (although, in fact, there are 2x360mm RADs installed in this image...because the 5000D supports a second one along the top of the case, and in this image, that's actually the one cooling the CPU). This side mount installation of a 360mm RAD isn't interfering with the case fans sucking cooler into the case from the front. You can see that to the far right. Three are installed.

That's a great case. Let's just go ahead and recommend it:

(64GB) https://www.auspcmarket.com.au/memo...e-64gb-2x-32gb-ddr5-5600mhz-c40-memory-black/

PSU
I don't think you need nearly that much PSU, especially if you opt for the 7700X as I have recommended, and as good as that particular PSU is, btw, that's a damn near criminal markup on the unit. This MSI A1000G 1000W Gold unit is a Tier A quality PSU manufactured by CWT costing you 1/3rd the price:

If you want to step above that the best option with that store is the Cooler Master V Platinum 1300W for +$120 AUD more:

Thank you for your very detailed response, it is much appreciated. The thing is... and as I said above - my priorities are:

"1) Lab - so needs much compute and memory (128gb preferred) Need two physical NIC's so motherboard plus expansion card unless there is a dual NIC mb available(which would be ideal)
2) Gaming."

I need a box to run NSX-T so a bunch of VM's requiring primarily a bunch of CPU and memory... not just for a gaming rig.

I am looking for a separate NIC so I can bind the distributed virtual switch to a separate physical interface to then connect to a Fortigate appliance to act as the uplink from my tier 0 that acts as my home gateway. The extra interfaces are an extra bonus and gives me more flexibility for testing labs.

If you're going to run up a shitload of VM's you need CPU and memory which is why I went fairly big on both. This is a dual purpose rig but primarily a lab machine... with a half decent video card.

- Updated the case the integrate your suggestion.
- The 1300W PSU at like half the price is better than the one that I picked? Even with the rather powerful video card and CPU?

So taking into account that I am after a metric fuckload of CPU and memory for VM's for a SDN lab, the rest of it is OK? The HDD's, motherboard, liquid CPU cooler etc?

Bear in mind, I don't really give a crap about the price (it's a company box and tax deductible anyway) and we get entirely fucked in the ass on the price of everything in Australia. It's generally OK?

I haven't really kept track of non-enterprise hardware in the last decade or more.
