Multiplat Assassin’s Creed Shadows

I like it so far, I enjoy the series too which seems to be rare these days. I'm not sure why people who don't like the series, or these types of games just want to shit all over it, but I can only guess they lead empty lives online and it gives them something to do.

It's not groundbreaking in any way, but definitely fun and solid from what I've seen so far. 7.5/10 would be my initial rating.

Just gonna try and give a quick overview of my thoughts about 15 hours in without spoilers, bear in mind that this is from the perspective of someone who generally really enjoys AC games and open world games in general.

Combat - Pretty good imo. There's more emphasis on parrying and dodging than usual in an AC game, particularly when playing as Naoe. Timing counters etc is pretty fun and there's undodgeable attacks you have to evade, certain classes you have to break stance or parry or dodge to attack head on, so it's less just walk into an area and swing like a maniac and smash everything than usual.

I wouldn't say the swordplay is as advanced as GOT as I haven't found it's got the stance changes mid fight etc and building skills out of different stances at least yet (it'd be late to introduce it at this point) but it's fun. So better than average AC but not as good as GOT in that regard for me.

Parkour is okay, kind of what you expect from the newer games. You've got a grappling hook which gives you some options, but none of the newer games are as smooth as something like Unity when it comes to traversing rooftops so it's not a return to that level but if you enjoyed the way it worked in origins or odyssey it's fine here, probably a little better in the sense that you can't just climb up anything by pressing up and do have to think about your route sometimes.

Stealth is good imo, plenty of options for ways to sneak into places. Usual issues with enemy AI where once you're prone on a rooftop for a minute they forget you just murdered half their mates but that's Assassin's Creed.

Game world I think is incredible from what I've seen so far. Areas are distinct from each other and I haven't really come across any big expanses of nothing yet. Lots of settlements, temples and castles dotted throughout the landscape.

Story wise it's fine so far. Both characters make sense and their backstories check out so far. Nothing I would call woke at all. I don't think any AC game is going to wow anyone with the storyline and writing but while it's hardly the Witcher 3 it's fine as an entry into the AC series.

Graphics are beautiful, but you can probably see that from any promotional material.

Scaling is good, lots of different options for upgrades and skills to unlock.

Base building is very good if you're into that, lots of different things in the game world you can collect for your base and lots of buildings you can throw up which gives you more scouts and helps your allies giving you motivation to collect resources in the game world.

Weather effects are some of the best I've seen.

Getting about is fine, usual markers, pathfinding and fast travel options. A lot of the viewpoints are in castles which I found a bit of a pain really as I don't really want to have the option to fast travel to the centre of a castle to attack it in a mission but it is what it is.

You don't have any bird this time but tbh I think that's better and you don't have the temptation to just send the bird to ruin the game world for you before you get there.

Mission wise it's the usual AC stuff. Meet someone, go to this area to look for them, track them down, kill them, maybe do a few other things before you're able to. Rinse and repeat. Same as any AC game.

A bit jumbled but those are my initial impressions without spoiling anything, but if you like AC games in general there's no reason you wouldn't like this one.
I agree pretty much word for word. This is accurate to my experience of the game so far.

I really liked Odyssey too.
I think most people did. Easily UBI's best effort, that for whatever reason didn't get old after 20 hours. They really nailed the writing and characters, and nothing beats that Spartan kick, which no matter how repetitive the combat got, you always had that satisfying kick to keep you entertained.

Spartan kicking some poor guard off the side of a cliff or off a big wall was something I could do all day.

Based on the reviews I've watched/read that focus on the game's content, it's mainly just more Assassin's Creed. If you like the new gen AC games (Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla), you'll like this. If you don't, then you won't like this game. I'll be passing on it, but hope anyone who's into Ubi style open worlds enjoys themselves. There's definitely a lot of content in there

Exactly the type of person I was commenting on. I don't waste my energy on things I don't like, there are dozens of games I do.

Feel free to get worked up though, I just feel like it would be better spent elsewhere. You could also try the game, maybe you'll like it?

If you paid any attention to what's currently happening in the USA you'd know how absolutely stupid this post is. Keep your stupid politics out of this thread. Play the game and form your own opinion. That's not anti-free speech. That's common sense.

If you paid attention to the fact that not everyone lives in the US.... ;)

This is where Hollywood, the entertainment industry and the far left are going wrong.

After playing a little more. The game isn't woke but it's not a great game. It's acceptable if you like to grind.

yay AC China?

I played it for 5 hours then I stopped , way too much grinding and repetitive

Yeah I'm kind of the same. It's fine and I'll probably finish it unlike Valhalla but it's not Odyssey.

I wish they'd make the assassinations more like they were in Unity. I think because the game got released as a buggy mess they ignore it as a source of inspiration, but every assassination in that game was unique and required a different approach.

Tencent Gaming, a chinese conglomerate in gaming industry, is acquiring a 25% stake on Ubisoft games...if i understand well !

Looks like Asmongold's crystal ball was right again. The sales aren't there. It's more of the same: a sinking ship. So Ubisoft kneeled to the golden Chinese dragon. Why else would they create a separate "subsidiary" with every one of their most valuable IPs to sell a quarter stake to the largest international gaming conglomerate in the world?

I understand why the Guillemot family is relieved. LOL at "seeking new investors". They weren't seeking investors, they were seeking buyers, and they found one. They're desperately scrambling to cash out. Because don't mistake the fact this headline conveyed the sale price projected to a total value above the company's current enterprise value as a positive sign. Remember EV includes debt ("Ubisoft drowning in debt"-- Feb 17, 2025). That's Tencent pulling the trigger at a bargain with the old...

Recall that Assassin's Creed: Shadows was announced in Sep-2022. Their stock peaked at 46.45 in August the month immediately before that. Prior to this sale's announcement yesterday, after which the stock jumped, it had fallen to 12.44. The company had lost 73% of its market cap value since the announcement of the game, and that doesn't even factor in their staggering debt ratio.

Ubisoft announced it was the second highest AC game in revenue. I don't think there was any sales figure that AC could realistically reach that would have saved Ubisoft. Starwars Outlaws, Avatar, and Skull and Bones all failed and failed massively. Two of those games are licensed IPs so they are much more expensive than the average AAA game. Price of Persia also failed but this was a smaller game. Xdefiant also failed. R6 outbreak also failed. Immortals Fenyx Rising also failed. This isn't even the full list of failures they've had.

Honestly after going over all their failures I'm shocked they've made it this long.

Just remember to blame wokeness for Ubisofts slide, not consistent mismanagement and about a decade of stagnation lol

To be fair, I don't mind the black samurai as much as I do the forced female ninja. So unrealistic and completely blue balling long standing MALE fans who've waited for an AC game set in feudal japan for over a decade.

Also, "sorry, japanese men, no representation for you".
When I was asking about this game months ago, the guy behind the counter told me that the entirety of Japan was pissed off about the Characters and that it caused the release of the game to be held back. The overall attitude, as he told me, was that no gamer in Japan was going to buy it.

But knowing the DEI agenda in place I figured they wouldn't change a thing, and it was just a matter of time.

Personally I stick to only a few games and I have never bought an Assassins Creed game, but I was interested in this one when I found out it was about feudal japanese warriors. I was considering it, but meh; I don't need it.
