Prates has dropped and KO'd everyone he's fought in the UFC besides Garry. People thought Leon could replicate a similar gameplan and Leon does have good grappling. We saw him work it at the end of round 1. The clearest difference, though, was output and pace. Ian was throwing 50+ strikes a round while mixing it up. Leon has always been a low activity fighter, patient to a fault at times, and he couldn't push the same pace, and throw the amount Ian was throwing, while keeping Prates guessing with the grappling.
Leon had never been KO'd before tonight, but 2 other southpaws like Prates, a journeyman and fat LW, almost stopped him:
Leon was always at a disadvantage in the striking, damn near everyone in the division is against Prates. His inability to transition his grappling and maintain a high pace allowed Prates to work his game. Ian managed to shut him down for a solid portion of the fight, even though Prates almost found the KO late.
