Dude looked awesome in his last fight. Missing weight twice in a row is never a good look.if he really is entering the cage at 170 and the dude can't even cut 10-15lbs off water properly I almost look at that as an even bigger problem.

Honestly with his skills and frame if he moved up to 170 I believe he could find plenty of success there. Funny how Ismagulov, the last dude to beat him also badly missed weight in his last fight. Hopefully Arman will have a harder time holding him down, but that dude is tenacious with his wrestling

@pankrat nice to know that he's apparently not as huge, 170-175 would be really average, if not even somewhat below average for 155, i think.

What could make it difficult for him - aside from not having had a nutritionist - is that between two guys who both cut the same amount of weight and rehydrate back to the same weight on fight night, the one who's more muscular for his frame will have an easier time cutting weight.

I will say it again, don't care what he walks at a week before the fight. Alvarez out of camp should weight around 200 LBs or more naturally, normally. He is that big.
Still think Arman will wax his ass.

I trained with Joel back in late 2018, when he was still fighting in AFL. His grappling coach Omar was teaching bjj and mma at a local gym and he joined us many times. He was also bouncing at a couple of clubs at that time. The guy is HUGE. He was much less muscular back then, and his walkaround weight was about 180 pounds. He has put a lot of muscle mass in these years and I got to know recently from a mutual friend that he is well over 190 pounds out of camp.

No.

Y desde luego en peso WW estaría en inferioridad física, si te parece que subir a 190 entre peleas es mucho, hay WW que entran más pesados que eso en la jaula, no digamos entre peleas.

Just found this Tsarukyan interview today. It's quite insteresting to see they apparently are looking for a grappling battle and to go for a submission rather than control/gnp. He surely can submit Joel; Everyone can be submitted under the right circumstances (Rodolfo Vieira was), but when you're going for submissions you leave openings and if one thing Joel is good at is capitalizing on the slightest mistake, hence his 16 submission wins. I mean, I commend Arman for his ballsy plan, but I don't know if it's wise to play into his rival's strengths. I'm obviously rooting for my man Joel, so I'm happy to hear this statement.

For non Spanish speakers:
  • Joel is now at 77Kg (170 pounds) & will be flying to Vegas on the 12th of February where the UFC P.I. will oversee the weight cutting process
  • This camp has been much better than the Moises fight where he had many distracting issues. Work is done and last sparring session was on Saturday.
  • Is preparing for Arman like he did for Moises. He expects a wrestling heavy approach from Arman, based on his past performances.
  • His whole camp was in his club, with his head coach Borja and Enrique Wasabi and only used Spanish sparring partners
  • Does not want to give a prediction. Says he is going for the finish like he always does.
  • Says he doesn't feel pressure at all and is focused on fighting the best. Is bummed that he could only fight 5 times in almost 3 years and wants 3 fights in 2022

He also mentions a documentary that was produced for Movistar (Spanish cable tv service) that features him and Juan Espino (shot in November). Found it on Youtube. Also in Spanish.

It's likely his best path to victory. Arman is a good striker, but he'd be at a huge height and reach advantage against Joel. The grappling will be competitive, too, but at least Joel's huge height and reach advantage won't be as much of an advantage on the mat.

Which confirms he is not that big of a LW as some of you pretend based on sherbro eye tests.
He is a lanky guy

lol I literally rolled with him, but hey, maybe my senses lie!

It seems they do.
Regardless of what your senses tell you, a guy who cuts 15-20lbs to make LW is not a big guy in the division. Not small, but nothing extraordinary.

If you rolled with other truly big pro LWs, your senses would be even more impressed in that regard

lol he is lanky, but he is a big boy regardless of what you think at 1,90m; walks around at 90 Kg, he even says in the interview he rebounded to 88Kg just after the Moises fight. I'm 1,75m and 82 Kg so I would be a pretty decent sized LW myself an I felt dwarved by his side. Why you insist on this pointless argument when you haven't even seen the guy in person is just beyond me and won't entertain this waste of time anymore.

Can't wait to see Alvarez miss weight again.

The sad thing is that when it happens, if Arman tells him to go fuck himself and not fight, the UFC will be mad at him and not at the guy that is too fucking big and unprofesional for the division.

Dude is not about height. There are 1'90 fighters at FW too.

I see people on here downplaying Joel's performances or calling him "size bully" because he - allegedly - enjoys a significan size advantage at LW.

Im saying that many others at LW are as big if not bigger than him. They might be shorter, but also thicker, and nobody is downplaying them because of it.

Many other LWs go up to 88-90kgs between fights.

Joel himself says it would be crazy for him to compete at WW, because he would barely need to cut weight there and he would be in significant size/weight dissadvantage

He´ll make weight this time, he's only 7kg above the limit three weeks away from the fight, but yeah he´ll have to move up eventually, specially now that he has put on much more muscle mass

I´m also pissed off by people who shit on him for missing weight, but he even admitted himself that he fucked up those two times. He's very talented and soon enough the weight cut will be more a hindrance than an advantage and if he keeps the muscle mass (he can even bulk a little more) he would still be a big WW and he is good enough to compete in the division (which is also less competitive than LW)

Maybe, eventually, but I doubt we will se it soon. Joel says it isnt even in his mind.
He has been competing at LW - and even FW - for years now and this is the first time he has hired a nutritionist. And its not like he is 20 years old and his body still developing, he is close to 30 years old

At WW he would definitely not be big. Maybe in terms of frame, but there are plenty of other dudes about as much tall but with limbs and waist twice as thick. That makes a difference in strenght/power.
