Psychology Today (I believe) did a piece on it. they are people who are out of control of their own lives and can't accept it, so they look for an explanation where they feel in control, and by preaching about it to others, they feel like they're privy to knowledge others don't understand, and thus feel they're in control again.
My ex's ex-husband used to believe he could communicate with aliens, Sandy Hook was a hoax, a spot in the sun meant the end of the world, all that shit. He had stockpiles of food and water in the basement and thought the end of the world was near. He'd spend all day on conspiracy forums and wound up neglecting his whole family, but never took responsibility for anything. It was always an external cause for his problems because he couldn't accept them as his own. So why not blame the Boogeyman?
I found out why he was so nuts eventually. His wife was a whore and his conspiracies were the one thing in the world that made him feel in control.
