Are Brawlers with KO power the absolute worst match up for strikers?

Whats everyones obsession with wilder and fury?

As a modern reference to the OP, see Silva vs Leben (if you want to define Leben as an "elite" brawler)

Brawlers with ko power(and some takedown defense) are nightmares for ANY style, especially on street. Big, untrained, wild, mean brawler can win most fights with just volume and agression even against someone more "technical".

Who are you calling an elite brawler in MMA?

Brawlers I always considered brawlers the fighters who try to turn the fight into slugfests because that’s where they have the advantage, and don’t mind taking damage in order to give damage.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re unskilled, not technically sound, or not good strikers. It just means that they are more offensive minded.

Wanderlei Silva
Rick Story
Cabbage
Matt Brown
Derrick Lewis
Leonard Garcia
Takaya Mizugaki
Al Iaquinta

These are guys that I would consider brawlers.

For his era and prime, Tank Abbott would have been someone to be considered an 'elite' brawler.
So Chris Leben would be the best 185lb brawler. Remember when he fought Silva? Because Leben doesn't.

A lay and pray wrestler is by far the worst for a striker
This. You can't strike when you're being smothered on the mat. Brawlers are probably the second easiest match up for a good striker. The only better match up for a striker arguably is a submission grappler with poor take downs. Anderson vs Leben is generally what happens when a good striker steps in with a heavy handed brawler, the brawler's only real threat is a lucky shot to land before he gets picked apart.

W-what?
The better striker beats the brawler 99% of the time what are you talking about?

I said prime Silva. Silva was not in his prime at 38 years of age

In MMA and Boxing the truly elite brawlers seem to give anyone a hard time no matter the skill set between them which I find fascinating. There punches can come at weird and uneven angles which make them hard to predict or counter and going blow for blow with them is a bad idea. Rewatching some of Wilders matches before his upcoming fight and the way he’d just windmill through his opponents is hilarious and frightening at the same time.

joe Frazier broke it down like this
Technical boxer>power puncher
Volume fighter>technical boxer
Power puncher>volume fighter

Man you guys are giving some HORRIBLE examples of "elite brawlers." Saying Chris Leben is "elite" is saying you just picked a fighter you think fit into the category and totally ignored the actual criteria. Or you really really want to use Anderson as an example to disprove the TS by trying to classify Leben and Forrest as elite brawlers lol.

Anyway yeah there's some element of truth to it. Think prime Wand or Rumble. Pretty sure Gus is technically a better striker than Rumble and we all saw that fight. I believe that is what TS means here. Pretty sure Overeem is technically better than Ngannou (minus that sequence where he actually got KOd in that fight of course).

Brawlers with legit wrestling is scary to pure strikers. The threat of the takedown gets their hands down and when the strike comes, its often at weird angles. Its always interesting to see how pure strikers adapt

No they are the easiest.

A wrestler with sneaky striking is the worst match up.
prrime johnny hendricks is this

idk his striking always looked basic at best but somehow he managed to hurt almost everyone he fought pretty badly.

Sounds like Costa vs Adesanya

In MMA brawlers can certainly be more dangerous due to the variables involved. In boxing guys like Chris Leben would get chewed up.

Wilder has decent technical abilities, he's no sloppy brawler. He gets carried away though when he smells blood.
Wilder does not have technical offence (comparative to the elite) although he does have good technical defence.

his striking is wild but he is accurate and powerful.
