Hi everyone.

I finally saw the movie "Apocalypse now" for the first time. It's a movie I had always heard was great but was never that drawn to watching until recently.

I found that it's a fantastic and also fantastical and kinda trippy war movie. Maybe it makes me dread ever being in a war more than any other movie, because it turns everyone insane or into animals.

I was hugely impressed by how well it holds up today. The bombing scenes were insane. Now of course a lot of movies have big explosions, but to have practical/real explosions on that scale, and shown so beautifully was actually freaking me out. Like "holy shit did they really do that?"
I don't think a studio would be allowed to do that nowadays.

Sadly when I'm watching the movie, about 2/3rd through there was a weird 30 mins sequence with some french guys arguing and shit. This almost ruined the movie for me.
Later when I checked I realised that I had watched the redux version which was 3h 16mins with 49mins added to from the original, including that whole sequence.

I can't wait to watch the original, and I expect it may become one of my favourite movies. However in the version I watched, it isn't.

What do you think of this movie and where does it rank among other Vietnam movies and war movies in general?

Cheers

I like it. But I also like cannonball run so maybe I’m not the best judge.

I want the hat that Robert Duvall is wearing,
Me too. He was one of the highlights of the movie.

Apparently the part where they steal his surfboard was also an addition in the version I watched. That was hilarious so actually I'm glad I didn't miss it.

Why was Marlon Brando so fucking fat though?

Cannibalism in the jungle?

IIRC they do steal the surfboard in the original but don't have the scene where they're hiding while he has recordings played by choppers looking for them.

He turned up fat and was a major pain in the ass so much that Coppola threatened to fire him at one point.

I found it a strange movie and not at all what I expected. Maybe I need to rewatch it

This movie was pretty surreal.

Startes with the surfing. Then the tiger, the whole thing with the Playboy bunnies. Not to mention Kurtz and his weird cult, obviously.

Ive only experienced war from other movies but i think most of this stuff probably never would happen. Still I think it's included just to be interesting and show a point about war.

Edit: @mb23100 that's what I'm trying to say

I use this scene for sarcastic replies to people bitching about mundane things all the time but it still gives me chills.

Amazing, epic, a lot of overused words actually apply to Apocalypse Now. There is just no other war movie like it, and it’s remarkable how a filmmaker (Coppola) could make two totally different, yet both iconic films so close together (this, and The Godfathers’s).

And I agree, the extended edition goes on too long, especially the sequence with the Frenchies. The original cuts Coppola made were good.

And now that you’ve finally seen this, you absolutely have to see Hearts Of Darkness, which chronicled the production; one of the best, most compelling making-of documentaries ever made. Co-directed by his wife, it stands as a film in its own right.

Thanks for the recommendation. Will definitely check it out

One of the best movies ever made. Every time I see it I have different thoughts and realizations about the themes and ideas. It's incredibly deep...

When Willard came out of the room after killing Kurtz and everyone fell to their knees I half expected him to settle in and take over the cult.

Such a great performance by Martin sheen!

That movie put me to sleep.
The movie about the making of it was much better.

One of my favorite films. The original version is so much better than the redux. Don't know why they even bothered re-releasing it.

The conceit of filming him in the shadows was meant to hide just how fat he showed up to set (Copps and co. were supposedly horrified). I actually think the shadowy nature of how Kurtz appears adds so much to those sequences though, so it really worked out.

I always loved Sheen's delivery of the line, "I don't see any method at all, sir."
