WASHINGTON (AP) — Immigration officials have sharply increased audits of companies to verify that their employees are authorized to work in the country, signaling the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration is reaching deeper into the workplace to create a “culture of compliance” among employers who rely on immigrant labor.
Expansive plans also have been drafted for a long-term push to scrutinize employers’ hiring practices more closely.

Under a 1986 federal law, companies must verify their employees are authorized to work in the United States by reviewing their documents and verifying to the government the employees’ identity and work authorization. If employers are found to hire someone without proper documents, the employers may be subject to administrative fines and, in some cases, criminal prosecution.

There were 2,282 employer audits opened between Oct. 1 and May 4, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Monday, nearly a 60 percent jump from the 1,360 audits opened between October 2016 and September 2017.

More good news about illegal immigration reforms.

When do we begin taking steps forward? This is taking steps back.

Well, we all know that all the job creators and business owners are Republicans. This is just cracking down on their own criminal hypocrisy.

Can't wait to see some of you cans in the fields picking fruits and vegetables.

next year maybe. its clear the current crop is rotten and we cant do much about it til then and even then I am not optimistic that trump is going to start showing the wisdom of the father or that congress will behave in a way that doesnt give everyone an ulcer

Then this decision should make you happy.

I'm more excited for the reveal that is the ever loved "Small Businesses" that are the main culprits and not the evil large corporations

I don't give a shit either way. I don't employ illegals nor do I have problems with them in my daily life.

Yes, but your tune would change very quickly it you owned a roofing company in Texas.

Good, a smart decision. No jobs for the illegals they won't come.

If you came to work for me it would break you. You wouldn't make it thru the summer; and roofers are all meth heads.

This was always the easiest and most logical way to crack down. Next would be to take away all forms of welfare including emergency room visits

That's good, this is one of the correct steps to take. But hopefully the audits are done in an ethical manner across the board, and nobody is able to pick and choose who gets audited for political purposes.

Welfare, yes. I don't understand how it could even be possible to apply for and receive welfare if you're not a citizen.

Taking away emergency rooms from anybody is just inhumane and bordering on evil. Regardless of how you feel about illegal immigrants, take a second and imagine turning a dying little kid away from a hospital just to prove a point. That's sick. Nobody should die on the streets because they were refused treatment in the United States, we're better than that.
