Anyone unemployed ?

You have to work a job to collect unemployment. It's one of the benefits of working. Might be different in England or Canada.

You usually have to have some sort of work experience to not have to start at the lowest rung of the job market. If you have no marketable skills, no one but retail or food service will bother with you.

I've worked three different jobs while in college, and I also have an associate's degree(whoopty doo). All of the jobs I worked were full time, none of them were high paying jobs by any means, but I learned how to maintain a till/deal with customers/etc. I was a cashier at two different places, and a produce clerk at another grocery store.

I never got laid off though. I always quit on good terms due to one reason or another. So, I'm not sure if I'd qualify for an unemployment check or not. As I said, my last job was well over a year ago, and I quit on my own terms.

The girl Im currently dating has been saying the same thing. I think Im hesitant to get unemployment because my current job was in healthcare, and it really pissed me off to see freeloaders take advantage of the system. Im not saying all people on unemployment are bums, but the majority we took care of were.

I guess I just never thought Id see the day when I would be let go after a decade. Ill apply online and see what happens. Thanks.

We worked at a small business that her father ran. I was there nearly 14 years. We held out hope that we'd be able to make it through this crisis but it just didn't work out. Now I'm at a higher paying job with better benefits and a much better prospect of me advancing my self and earning more. I won't say that I'm happy I lost my other job but I'm glad it happened now while I'm still relatively young and I have found a place with excellent benefits and retirement.

Keep your head up and get the unemployment you have earned while you need it. Don't lose your savings because you're too proud to take it.

Worked in a coal mine for 5 year that permenantly shut down and just recieved my first unemployment check. That being said I have 2 job interviews this week for less than I'm making on unemployment and I'll take the first one that offers me a job. Fuck sitting around the house.

The compensation does suck and it's not enough to live on but it's better than nothing. Also, after sitting around for three months, I'm sure I never want to do that again.

Feel you on that one.Luckily when I lost my job i had some money saved. When I was unemployed several years back.I helped my parents out, collected cans, and went through temp agencies. Sitting at home doesn't do jack.

I cannot imagine how calling the head honcho, and saying hello is going to help you. Just because he took his time to investigate who the head honcho is, and is being "aggressive" by introducing himself does not mean he is a good worker or employee. I cannot imagine anyone who would be even slightly impressed.

I interview people who apply to live in apartments. It is the same thing. An employer interviews someone with whom he wants to make an exchange. The applicant gives you some kind of work to varying quality, and you give him the paycheck. In my situation, I give a renter a home, and the renter gives me a rent check. I dont care if the potential renter is nice, charming, is aggressive in communicating with me. I want to verify his background. I want make sure he do what he says he can, which is make those timely payments of said amounts. I am pretty sure an employer wants the applicant to be able to do what he says he can. So unless it is a sales position, I would be turned off if someone is too aggressive with contacting me and "putting himself at the forefront of my attention". In fact it is a red light for me.

It isn't harassment... a quick call, and you tend to get voicemail. The worst that can happen is the job is still a No. Just don't be creepy about it (meaning, try to get your anxiety under control, Smile over the phone). Most of the time, if you GET someone on the phone, do:

"Hi, I was under the impression you may be the hiring position for this role, I would love to interview, did you have any open times this or next week?" If they hem and HAW, which means maybe they closed it, or they want to say no, ask "if this is a bad time, I can call next week perhaps?"

Meetups I just mean trade associations, or even www.meetup.com, or LinkedIn groups.

Most of those are free, except for Associations, like AMA: American Marketing Association.

There are SHIT LOADS of associations local to communities (like WordPress, Ruby, .NET, etc. for technical).

just google _market/field/industry association or
_market/field/industry group

Finally got my offer today. I take a drug test tonight and hopefully start on Saturday.

No, i'm employed and really i've never been unemployed except for a few weeks after college...but right now I seriously wish I could fucking quit and not work for a while. I just accepted a promotion a little over a month ago and it's high stress shit. I liked my job pre-promotion, but it was a significant raise so I really can't go back...but I HATE it now.

Sighhhhh. The grass isn't always greener. I'm lucky to have a decent paycheck and all...but holy shit this job is going to turn me into an alcoholic.

That's kind of rough. But, it's a job (cliche, I know). Is it rigorous?

During the season it will be insane. At this hotel there is actually 2 seasons where as most only have 1 busy season. I am told it consists of cooking for between 12-14 thousand a night between 3 venues. Im just stoked that I went from salary to hourly. Salary sucks in this industry. My last restaurant I spent around 100+ hours a week and got my salary at 40 hours. This hotel Ill probably be doing 80 hours which will give me 20 hours at time and a half and 20 hours at double time.

I wash dishes at a hotel for $16 not bad for a college student. Though I feel the station I'm assigned to should be paying more than the other stewards based on actual work being done. I'm stuck in a 10x10 cave washing dishes being piled up by punk ass cooks who don't use 50% of the dishes they leave me.

Unemployed every winter from construction work. Laid of feeling great, top physical condition nice to relax for a month, then you slowly rot away until spring starts.

What hotel do you work for that pays that much for a disher? In SoCal your lucky to hit $12 after a few years.

Ill be 6 months on 6 months off for the next 3-4 years. Takes a few years to get permanent job for the government, but I'm already in. Just have to put the time in.

I look forward to the time I will have to travel and hunt.

I live in Hawaii I guess I'm working for one of the more popular hotels. $13 start but 16 after 3 months. Good money but pretty tiring for me and I'm a youngin' myself.

Do you know how much your line cooks/kitchen supervisors/Chefs make?
