Anyone else miss Japan?

All that work, to find a vid in like 24p with squiggly lines all over the place. Fuck, even DREAM was a task. Trying to wade through Nico Nico Doga, finally finding a stream, and then the stream being invite only lol.

Truly was tough in years past. Very thankful those days are over.
Yes! whenever anyone says there's too much MMA and wish there was less events, just throw those people down the stairs.

I miss Japan, been there twice. Amazing country. I miss Pride fc too, but I will always remember it with a smile on my face. Would I want it back? No. The fighters who made PRIDEFC amazing are gone. It was a once in a lifetime thing.

It doesn't matter that the stadium was also used for other "events". Pankration was the beginning of MMA whether you like it or not. We can go to more recent origins of Vale Tudo and once again, a large stadium of excited people watching two fighters.

My point was that the origins of MMA are closer to the Octagon fights we see today, not that pseudo pro wrestling they did in Pride FC inside a BOXING RING.

The latter is exactly how combat sports weren't "meant to be treated". The clapping is cute, very adorable(though I must laugh at the contrast of an ultra shy & introverted crowd while having an insanely over the top presentation, like that screaming lady idiot). But you don't do MMA inside a boxing ring. One of the most retarded things thought up in Combat sports history.
I heard the cage was designed by the Gracies to favour grapplers.

Pretty sure the dude who directed Conan the Barbarian designed the cage, but I was high when I read that book, so I may be mistaken. Seriously, the dude who directed Conan was one of the guys who helped envision the UFC lmao

Learned something new today. I swear there was a video somewhere, I think it's a UFC 1 behind the scenes where they talk about it favouring grappling. I think I remember someone talking about alligators too as crazy and obviously BS that was. I still remember someone saying they had a ring surrounded by alligators concept in this specific video I'm talking about. I will try and find it. I'm getting old.

EDIT: so this link https://www.mmamania.com/2013/10/24...ufc-1-alligator-shark-filled-moat-octagon-mma

quotes this:

"Read this account from UFC co-founder Rorion Gracie and weep, fans of privately held companies one has no financial stake in making as much money as humanly possible (via Fighter's Only):

We thought of a moat with alligators. We thought of an arena with sharks around. We seriously thought about an electric fence. But we couldn't in case one guy pushed the other into the moat and he'd get chewed up. We laughed at it, but in Hollywood your mind travels and we just thought of every different possibility... Eventually I settled on the Octagon."

And I learned the Conan director was training under Rorion after I googled what you wrote. So I speculate they schemed up the most advantageous style of arena for BJJ/Royce. On another note, Conan has a similar vibe to Mad Max Thunderdome. Food for thought.

If you want a good perspective on what happened, this book is the entire creation of the UFC from pre-idea to UFC 1. You probably won't put it down, it will be a quick read.

And that's for anyone reading this, that's an interesting read.

Its hard to answer the OP.

Im a realist.

At that time I did NOT want that era to end...but everything comes to an end eventually.

It ended, and you cant go back. I'm over it. You can watch those old Pride fights whenever you wish. You can watch Rizin or Dream to whet your appetite for that atmosphere.

The sport overall is in a better place than those days, and im happy for that.

Lets not stereotype all ufc fans as dumb meat heads. Just like lets not stereotype all pride fans as elitists.

Pride fan gently scoops caviar in on to whale bone spoon while sipping Krug watching rabbits with mini chainsaws strapped to their backs fight to the death: Pffft, Elitists....

I don't think I've ever felt anything like a Japanese event

I don't think martial arts is meant to be treated like a boxing event

Japan is the best.

I recently met 2 girls from Japan at a indoor tough mudder/spartan run facility. I accidentally on purpose photo bombed them. They thought it was funny. <Lmaoo> We took pics and exchanged numbers.

Here girls would try to start a fist fight and a dong measuring competition. <Moves>

Japan W! :sniper:

I think a big advantage of Japan was the environment helped build up the MMA talent pool very well, you had a fanbase who had a high amount of knowledge and multiple promoters throwing money around which was good for drawing in talent from other sports.

This is what people who are clueless about Japan and think a cage is better than a ring look like.

lol fighters with money can juice to the gills
plus fix fights
those poor pro wrestling fighters that cant afford the juice are obviously on a disadvantage
lol circus fights

Beats CM punk and women's MMA but you don't have any class so you woudlnt understand.

No one did mma better than japan

Edit: the difference between pride and the ufc is that pride was a better promotor of fights and fighters while the ufc is a greedy brand first tyrannical pseudo sport that tries to monopolize mma and corner the market through aggresive financial takeovers and an inferior product

Japanese MMA, specifically Pride was just so classy. It really felt like a global event. The white ring and blue gloves. The entrances. The presentation. UFC is garbage and junk in comparison. Tasteless hillbilly trash.

This is so true, the only thing that was holding it together in recent years were unique personalities of the fighters, but once guys like Khabib, Tony, Conor, Adesanya, Khazmat or even cringy Triple C and Colby are all gone, we will be left with a uniformed, tasteless, empty calories product.

Pride’s presentation made most of their rosters legends of the sport. No one will remember boring ass guys like Gane, Edwards or Sterling in 10 years, no matter how skilled they are
