Any Word on Doo Ho Choi's Military Service?

Sounds like a good deal to me.

Yes, never being able to visit family and friends you grew up with sounds like a good bargain.

I think there was some pop singer who ducked out of his military service by getting US citizenship which led to him being barred from entering Korea and a huge backlash. I could be wrong on the details.

They can visit him...

Hopefully it doesn't come into play. He looked so impressive on the weekend.

100% KZ deserved an exemption. I just don't think the MMA scene was big enough for the South Korean government to warrant it at the time. And while MMA hasn't necessarily exploded over there in the 2 years since, it's still making strides such as their first UFC event, fighter tours and the injection of other exciting talent like Seo Hee Ham and Soo Chul Kim. I think if Choi can keep doing well in the next few years, he's in a better position to get an exemption than KZ was.

hope so mate

I'm a Celtic FC fan, and we had a Korean player named Ki Sung Yeung who got out of his service by winning a medal in the Olympics, but I recall reading an article at the time about it being a bit taboo to get an exemption, so much so that many people who could have earned an exemption refused as they would have to live with the stigma of not serving later in life.
Yea that makes sense.

I imagine that if he would have won the title KZ would have gotten a pass.

I dont think winning the title would have changed anything , reputation of UFC and MMA in general in korea is not as good as world cup or olympic.

You are correct about that information. However, the thing that caused him getting ban is not just because he used loophole to avoid military service. literally every celebs, rich and politicians get away with avoiding military service by one way or another. Before he received his military service call, poor fucker was talking about how important serving our country is, he will serve as special force in military no matter what and all that kind of bullshit which got him the biggest backslash in the history of country XD

south korea needs to drop that shit

they are afraid of a country that probably uses rocks as weapons, for crying out loud

It'd probably be more competitive for him in the army. He wouldn't fight cans there like he's being fed in the UFC

If you're country makes you join the military, it should be straight out of high school where it's over and done with early on. And like the U.S., there should be a fully awarded Montgomery GI Bill for college up to Bachelor's level at least.

The vast majority of young Korean men serve pretty much right out of high school. Walk onto a Korean university, and the first year males are usually two years older than the first year females.
