Has he served his 2 years of military service? it would be a shame for him to have to serve it in the prime of his career.

He hasn't served unfortunately. Although there have been soccer athletes from South Korea who have received exemptions from serving before as a prize for making semi finals in the World Cup. So if Doo Ho Choi can stay successful in the division there is the odd chance he could be granted one too.

wow, never even thought of that. Hopefully he gets some sort of exception. I know the Zombie didn't, but he was injured and getting married and stuff, so maybe he didn't even try for it. If I remember correctly, they just put him in an administrator type job. Would suck to see this guy disappear for 2 years in his prime.

Best name in the game! This thread actually makes me look forward to the return of KZ and I'm pretty sure he'll be eligible to return by the end of the year.

The Korean Zombie was doing well but that didn't stop him from having to serve

Man that would be a shame... But it's the same thing for every Korean young fighter.

He's the most exciting prospect at 145, and the UFC should make him fight more often. His 3 fights lasted like 4 minutes combined..

I imagine that if he would have won the title KZ would have gotten a pass.

I think he can defer his service Til he's 32 correct me if I'm wrong

South Korea should realize that they don't need a standing army to beat North Korea, they just need to get the Americans to do it. And to help that along they should send their men to win UFC championships and get America on their nuts and run at their beck and call!

Nah, Trump has gone on record saying he won't help those freeloaders anymore unless they start paying us.

what about KZ - he was a top tier contender and he was exempt? shit rule either way, making people serve is so fucking old jesus

100% KZ deserved an exemption. I just don't think the MMA scene was big enough for the South Korean government to warrant it at the time. And while MMA hasn't necessarily exploded over there in the 2 years since, it's still making strides such as their first UFC event, fighter tours and the injection of other exciting talent like Seo Hee Ham and Soo Chul Kim. I think if Choi can keep doing well in the next few years, he's in a better position to get an exemption than KZ was.

LOL he said that??!?! Its nutty that a dude so ignorant about foreign policy and how international regional presence works is so close to leading this country.

I'm a Celtic FC fan, and we had a Korean player named Ki Sung Yeung who got out of his service by winning a medal in the Olympics, but I recall reading an article at the time about it being a bit taboo to get an exemption, so much so that many people who could have earned an exemption refused as they would have to live with the stigma of not serving later in life.

what type of shit is this? This is AMERICA the freedom, cant do this thing if he moves here.

True, but in order to do that he must renounce his citizenship in Korea, which pretty much gets you disowned.
