Any hunters on Sherdog?

Black bears are tasty if

A. It is prepared right
B. It's been eating something tasty

Never had brown/kodiak/grizzly but I have heard they are not great.

Hunting is therapeutic and how we survived when I was a kid. I like just being out in the woods. I can make a mean deer steak. :)

If beagles weren't so expensive I'd hunt wabbit.

Know a good way to prepare bear? The only bear I've eaten was horrible and was like trying to chew through a shoe.

I've also heard that it's deadly to eat a bear liver because it has too much vitamin K. Anyone know if that's true?

I've never made it but I've eaten it. Slow cooked and letting the fat drip away from what I could tell.

I think a stew or sausage might be good too.

I think it's seasonal too...bad meat but good fur in the spring, good meat but bad fur in the fall due to their eating/rubbing habits.

You are also better off with a bear not near humans, they eat garbage and then taste like it.

I've only had black bears as we don't have brown/grizzly in my area.

Cue America vs Europe flame thread.

The only thing I can kill without feeling bad is a fly.

hunted boar, rac****, rabbit, squirrel and deer. Ate all except the rac****s, work with some guys that love **** stew. Haven't hunted in years, mostly because I don't have anyone to go with and I have a hard enough time getting my wife to take the giblets out of a turkey let alone prep meat I killed, even if I prepped the meat she'd flip out about anything that isn't procured in the meat section of a local grocery story.

I'd get some range time with the gun you plan on using and if your friend can teach you how to track/stalk. Learning how to construct a good hide is good skill as well. Depending on what kind of conditions, location and how long you'll be out you'll be hunting in I'd consider doing a survival course and land navigation training.

For animals like bears where you'll have little room for error I'd consider getting a guide to help you. I know a guy that years ago hunted polar bear and if it wasn't for the guide he'd most likely have been killed by the bear.

Biomagnification makes eating it more or less pointless. There's no nutritional value. It's also much more likely to be toxic.

As far as nutritional value, bear meat is high in protein, iron, zinc, riboflavin, vitamin b12, and low in sodium. It's also a bit high in fats & cholesterol, though.

I know a lot of hunters and occasionally get some of the extra meat from their hunts, typically hog or venison. They will generally take 2 deer & 2 wild hogs a year (and assorted small game animals to fill in their diet) and butcher it & freeze it and eat off of it for a very long time.

If you are wanting rabbit, you don't really "need" dogs, they just make it a whole lot easier. If you have a buddy you hunt with, just kick the bushes. Obviously safety is paramount, as with any hunting, but if you get an area that you know has bunnys, just look for the fence rows or bushy areas and take turns kicking. The rabbit will normally run out the back side, away from the threat so the second guy will be at the ready over there. Rabbit is really good eating if you have never tried it.

Anyone who wants to kill things for fun is mentally unbalanced. Instead of spending money on a gun you'd be better advised to spend it on counselling.

It's basic fucking instinct. People have had to hunt for the majority of human existence. I think something is wrong with you. Let me ask you a question. Do you eat meat or complain about the thousands of animals slaughtered with n chance to roam free?

Nothing funner in the world to me then deer hunting. I look forward from the week I get back to next years week or two out of state hunts I go on with my dad every year.

Game meat is just like any other...it sucks if you cook it wrong, it can be wonderful done right.

I don't know exactly how my grandmother cooked bear but the things I do know is that it was cooked slowly at low heat for at least 10 hours and in a covered roaster with the meat laying on a bed of potatoes for the tallow to drain into. The potatoes were fed to the pigs.

I don't think bear grease is particularly tasty. Pigs probably loved it though

There isn't anything wrong with getting pleasure from sticking a sharp barbed hook through a fish's mouth and yanking it out of the water only to throw it back in. Lol. It's not like those disturbed hunters.

I guess for a long time people believe the fish didn't actually feel pain but new studies show it isn't true.

I've had roast bear beef before and it honestly just tasted like gamey regular cow roast beef.

A bear rug would really tie the room together, and to be able to say you've downed a bear is a cool life experience imo.
