Ant Man was a really good movie for what it was trying to be. It's not my favorite, it's not the most memorable or epic - though the Falcon fight scene was awesome - and frankly, I came out being impressed above and beyond what I expected. Though it's one of their secondary movies when all is said and done, it's a secondary movie done right and, despite it being a character I didn't care about, the movie stood on its own merits without huge buildup in other films or having massive names to carry it.
And yes, this is a contrast to how a movie like BvS turned out. BvS has a lot of people rushing to tout that "it's not that bad" and whatnot but, frankly, if you took Batman and Superman and DC's IP's out of it and had it be generic vigilante hero X vs generic caped alien superhero Y, no-one would give a hoot about the movie and it would just be a colossal failure. Ant-Man? No-one cared much about him to begin with so, when I left that movie pleasantly surprised, it was because the movie was good, not because it had an event everyone wanted to see on the big screen. BvS is a much beloved and anticipated matchup carrying a bleh movie, and Ant-Man is good movie carrying a relatively unimportant character.
