The vaccine was in stage 2 when COVID hit. It's been in development for 8 years. It was very fortunate for Moderna in a sense that COVID came along when it did.

What's also good is that it can be kept for 30 days at standard refrigeration or up to 6 months at -20 degrees Celsius. That's a big upgrade from the Pfizer vaccine. There will be less spoilage and logistically easier to carry out for distribution
