A lot of those were classics, but I can see where you're coming from. Like I get the philosophy of where Vash and Kenshin are coming from in that killing is VERY wrong, but it's just not a practical application and sometimes it's a necessary evil(one that does taint you). Sugimoto from Golden Kamuy said it best, "I don't like killing people, but I will if it's what I need to do to survive". Funny thing is that I rate Outlaw Star MUCH more above Trigun nowadays specifically since it doesn't try too hard to play any philosophical things.

I don't really disagree that a lot of 90's anime were classics, I'm just saying that, as a whole, the late 2000's and 2010's were better. Aside from NGE and Bebop, I'd pick FMAB, KLK, Madoka, HxH, or Into the Abyss over virtually any 90's anime in a heartbeat, especially Trigun or Kenshin

The racism aspect I found out about from a thread in another forum and it was disturbingly dead on in that it's the same stuff hate groups have used in the past since time immemorial to "other" certain groups and justify hate crusades against them(stunted, ugly, cowardly, dangerous, gonna rape your women folk, etc.). The misogyny, sexism, and use of rape in what almost comes off as titillation were just incredibly gross and offensive(the manga is significantly worse from hat I've heard including POV scenes) and feels like it's there for nothing more than shock value and if you removed it the story would be no different, and yeah they commented that it would have been much better and interesting if Goblin Slayer had actually been a woman instead of a cliche bishonen as was revealed. Your point of enjoyment I greatly respect since it's not under any illusions and I can admit to having a liking for terrible crappy movies especially comedies unironically. The comparisons to Berserk and Doom HORRIBLY miss the fucking point of those series since the enemy is internal. It's humanities own evil making the whole such a horrific place and miss the point that everything from the Apostles, Godhand, and Demons from Doom are all humanity at it's most unrestrained evil and vile allowed to run rampant.

I mean, sure, GS is racist in the same sense that European folklore about goblins and the fair-folk and what not are racist, but I don't think it's really fair to call GS racist when it's literally just reusing centuries old fantasy tropes. It's sexist (as i pointed out earlier, but i think it's a bit of a stretch to call GS racist.

On more positive shows, I really wanna watch Bunny Senpai, but it just feels...not me. Like while I KNOW it's well done from all the reviews I've read, I'm just sort of done with HS drama's of this nature.

I think you have a lot of the same misgivings about BGS that i had, but i think that if you just watch the first 3 episodes, you'll realize how wrong you were (as i did).

Zombieland Saga you people need to watch. Get The Fuck Out of Here with the Idol Hate too. It's fucking amazing and really does hit you in the feels when it wants to. Ditto for Slime. I'm not seeing people talk about Slime on here and that makes me feel a certain type of way since it's been fucking amazing on all fronts(Story Adaption, Animation, Sound) and we might make it to one of the most badass moments of the early parts of the series. As an aside, I cannot recommend Slime's manga and LN's enough and can post some links and stuff for those interested, though I encourage you guys to buy it since the scans are missing some bits from the official releases.

I completely agree as far as Zombieland and Slime go. Both of those are fucking brilliant. Slime in particular, i think, tries to do a similar thing to GS as far as playing with fantasy tropes, but it's MUCH more clever about it.

90s anime will always have a special place.

Yu Yu Hakusho, Gundam, Berserk, The Big-O, DBZ and many more.

I can definitely see your points about the classics vs the new ones. It's DEFINITELY a combination of nostalgia, tastes, and timing.

Your point is perfectly valid and I agree overall. I don't think it's intentionally racist, but it's definitely drawing from that same well which is 100% cheap and lazy writing hence where Grimgar did it much better by expanding on the culture of goblins and why they have a sour relationship("Stop killing our dudes for magic stones and taking our stuff!") with humans. A lot of that fantasy stuff does have some...REALLY not good connotations though that need some reworking a la Revisionist Orcs from Warcraft.

I might give BGS a try, but it's definitely gonna be after some of the funny shows I have to finish like Grandblue, Asobi Asobase, and some action stuff like Gridman.

Slime is my idealized anime version of Disgaea and Makai Kingdom. It's basically Reconstructing the entire Isekai genre and there's a lot of stuff from the LN's that fleshes lots of world aspects out that are fascinating(otherworlders are common and many have brought over ideas and concepts with them).

Wolf Guy Ookami no Monshou-
Too. Much. Rape.

I was hoping for a more torturous, painful death for the main villain. Kind of a let down. They failed(rushed?)to build a world where the supernatural exist. The reporter pissed me off. I expected him to be the a bigger, more viscious werewolf since he's an adult and not a hybrid like the mc.

I couldn't finish that series. I got to the point where there was like...five chapters left and I still bailed instead of pushing through to the end. And if there's a series whose rape scenes are really gratuitous and disgustingly fetishized then it's that one.

I was actually skipping parts with nudity. They don't really add anything to the story. We get it! They're dehumanizing the woman. We got it 8 chapters back. And the ending was wtf? Illuminati lab or some shit.

5/10.

Throw in the 2000s anime and that's my golden age.

Rurounin Kenshin, Flame of Recca, Vision of Escaflowne, Hajime No Ippo, Hikaru No Go, One Piece (back in the day when it was hilarious as shit to me.. it's gotten mad stale), Naruto, Death Note...

Ahhh... anime was a religion to be followed back then...

Glad to see another Escaflowne fan on here. It was actually the anime that eased me into watching other mecha animes. The whole fantasy element and world building of that anime really won me over. Also, the sound track suited that anime perfectly.

As for other good 90's and early 00's animes, I'll add: S-cry-ed, Blue gender, Slam Dunk, jin roh, princess mononoke, golden boy, slayers, etc etc

I could go on forever. I really don't think animes are any better now than they were back then, at least not in terms of storytelling and creating memorable characters.

I don't necessarily think it's any worse either. I mostly just prefer the older animation styles.

They made some follow up OVA's or movies or something top this. About the last part, I think it's that a lot of stuff has gotten a lot more...Conservative in length. Like a lot of those shows were either fairly long where as now we're lucky if we get shows that are 2 cour on top of changing trends and tastes so we aren't as likely to grow attached to some of the characters or even series outside of some standouts.

No love for Magic Knight Rayearth? One of the biggest plot twist in anime. Actually, the 1st anime that I saw that had a plot wist that changed everything.

WTF was up with Vinland Saga this month? A Shining reference and then some random bear-looking dude out of nowhere. Has the author lost it?

Found something to speed read. Pretty straight forward plot; weak dude becomes reborn and levels up fast.

Solo leveling

You can’t rush art!

I’m sure Miura will finish Berserk somewhere in the next 10-15 years.

But what will be done first Berserk or a song of ice and fire/game of thrones books?

I feel like Togashi will quit long before he finishes HxH
That would suck.

I think he already has the next volume written. So if he taps out, he should look for someone to succeed and draw the rest. I’m mean the art is great but most fans stick around for the story. Im sure there are other Mangaka who could replicate his style.
